E8500 vs Q6600

coppercladcopperclad Member Posts: 92

Ok, im building my first computer. But i cant decide which is better for GAMING, mmo's mostly.

I think the Q6600 2.4 GHz, 1066 fsb,   would be better if any games were optimized for quad core, but as far as i know few are. If games like WAR and TCoS will only be running on 2 cores any way wouldnt the E8500 3.16GHz 1333 fsb run much better?  Let me know if I am way off base here, I just dont know which is the better way to go? Faster 2core or slower 4core? both are $189 exact same price. I will also probably be upgrading fairly soon when the faster quads get cheaper.

Thx

And saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade that, with it, thou mayest blow thine enemies to tiny bits....in thy mercy."

I would just get an E8400 use the money difference to get a good motherboard and heatsink and overclock it over the E8500. Some motherboards have an auto overclock feature which you can do with a few simple clicks. I have one machine with an E8400 in and another with a Q6600, the E8400 I can get to just over 4ghz and the Q6600 no more than 3.67ghz. On synthetic testing and game testing the dual core came out on top, I like the quad for video editing software as it speeds up the process by more than half. There are only a handfull of games out there that will support 4 cores, for now I would go for two at the faster speed and see the difference in games you play today and in the near future.

    E8400 - $169.99

    E8500 - $189.99

Go with the E8500, you can't but much of a mobo upgrade for $20.    I went with the P5Q Pro. Assuming you're going withan ATI Vid Card.

I can assure you the ywont run "much" better.  you should alwasy go for more cores at the same price point unles you are building a very specialised pc.    THe q660 is highly and easily overcockable too runs cool and is wel l regarded by many a gamer.
