Overheating problem help

cichy1012cichy1012 Member UncommonPosts: 347

Had my AMD 6400 x2 on a zerotherm fan cooler and I was getting 62C at idle, so i decided to put back in my dangerden water cooled system and now Im idling at 48-50C. I know its a drop, but is this normal?

I cant for the life of me find my little booklet where I had written down my temps prior to installing the Fan.

Is this running to hot at idle for water cooled? Ive reseated the cpu, reapplied paste 2-3 times, and same results so I know it cant be the position of the waterblock.

Any help would be appreciated.

It is a 90nm processor so it will run hotter then Barton core Athlons.  However, not that hot it should be idling 30~40c tops on air, lower on water cooling.  What I wonder is what are you using the monitor temp?  Then how is your airflow setup and what size case do you have?

     Seriously it can handle it.

Far too many people fussing over this rubbish.

Jees there are better things to worry about in life than the temp of your processor as long as its running and you are not arsing about in the bios without a clue what you are doing.

We have all seen the  submarine movies and the Star Trek episodes where the guages go way past the red mark and things usually work out. (Chernobyl was a different matter alltogether)

Your Cpu temp montor should read  Jees Im Cold, Fanny,  and Thats My Boy.

Instead that annoying little beep some of them give you when you stray out of the Fanny zone it should have have a voice over (preferably a hill billy or African american one) saying " Now we is cooking - Yeah! "

It is only if you are a dedicated overcocker you need to worry about this - or if your pc is restarting or the neighbours keep commenting on how many barbecues you seem to be having lately.

Lower temperatures outside the normal tollerance levels for your CPU should increase lifetime but youll be binning it before 5 years are - dont kid yourself.

If you do fry the F**ker you can always sell it on ebay.   Just include "this is F**ked in the advertisement text and colour it the same as the page so it is technically there in writing if they complain, which ofc they wont becasue the chances are they will thing they, the postman or the dog knackered it.   If by any chance they do complain you point to the ad and aksk the mquestions like - were you earthed, is there a mobile telephone transmitter nearby, have you been using your GPS etc.

All CPU's can handle up to 80 to 90 celcius and operate normally but the life of the CPU will be shorter then normal because the silicon will start to break down.

That is around 160 to 170F, the data sheets all come with your CPU and even the managing director of fabrication has stated once before in an article back in 2002 that all CPU's are built to withstand long periods of high heat. What kills a CPU faster then heat is voltage, over voltages break down the CPU faster then heat, and so the shorter life expectancy of over clocked cpu's.

I find it funny how some people call themselves true hardware geeks but don't actually know or understand the hardware, what it can and can't do. You would be surprised to know AMD tests it's cpu's up to 220F for quality tests and they don't normally fail even at that temp. Intel does the same but I can't recall a temp they go up to.

OP, your CPU that you listed runs the hottest of the 90nm fab AMD CPU's. Everyone who has this CPU runs very hot. I remember the overclocking forums about this Windsor design and they all ran incredibly hot with air of high 40's to low 50's. Although you should be lower temps with your setup. It makes me wonder that your motherboards censor is a little off on measuring cpu temp. Most AM2 boards are off and you need a correct bios update to fix the temp reporting issue. Other than that you may also have a problem with whatever monitoring software you have.

I would not worry about it your fine.

Who let you in the VIP section?

my water cooled desktop cpu runs 10 degrees warmer then room temp which i keep around 75 F hehe, my air colled laptops e8400 (sager 9262 god i love this thing for gaming at work) runs about 105 F when ive got her cookin full blast and the fans on manual 100%.  170F seems a bit warm to me but then i like my cpus to last me 4-5 years at which point i go up to the new tech and keep the new one frosty =D  been repeating this cycle since pentium 2s were top of the line hehe

A five year old CPU gonna cost a few bucks,,,,,,,, Is it really worth worrying about ?

i dont buy the cpus when they are 5 years old hehe but all my old retired gear like my 5  year old pentium 4 still run at full capacity with untold lifetime left in them, i generally recycle them by giving those old rigs to people who need a pc for webbing and such but cant go about getting one for themselves.
