The 7900 GT is 4 generations old now, so it might be an ok idea to upgrade.  However, I would not aim at the high end.  It only takes a short while for that high end to be obsolete.  I would aim somewhere in the middle.  Right now the sweet spot is the HD4850 and HD4870.

which would make more sense for me to get the 4850 or 4870 since there is a difference in $100 between the two

As always with Hardware, unless ou have cash to burn - look for the sweet spot were you get the best performance for the price.
I presume you have tried the "mummy mummy i NEED a new graphics card for my studies option ?"
Of course if you get a new graphics card, you may never graduate - many dont and even more turn into shandy drinking poofdas

nah dude i'm buying this with my own money so i'm trying to figure out which card would be the best money wise to last me 2 years

does your mobo support pci-e 2.0?

No graphics card right now even makes full use of PCI-e 1.0.  I would say get the HD4870 if you have the extra money, there is a performance impact.

so the 4850 or the 4870 would be the best bang for the buck i could get for a card to last at least 2 years?

btw my mobo is only PCI-e 1.0
