Once communities have established and we get closer to lvl 40 content, you will notice more chat. Honestly, did you really expect a ton of talk in the teir 1 area during open beta? This is everyone's chance to try out the game. They want to get to sieging as fast as possible.
Communities should be built starting from the beginning.
In EQ I am still guilded with people that I came up through the levels with 6 years ago.
and i still play with my friends from swg from 5 years ago...but i didnt know them in beta. Beta i kept to myself, and didnt start forming real friendships until launch.
But chatting in wow for instance in beta, it was VERY active. Because, it was so easy to communicate to everyone. I don't know how the chat system works on this game...whether a shout can be seen from anywhere or what...if it's based on zones or what? but I think they need world chat...that would be great. I like talking about life and having fun and bullshitting around and talking pvp in the chat....dunno...makes the game more fun when you're talking with others that are playing.
I agree that a good community is essential for an MMO, and I've always been an advocate for more group-based gameplay. After all, it is a MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER online game... but I guess I'm in the minority with that thought.
With that said, General Chat is generally the boon of all good communities. A lot of veteran MMO players probably turn it off as soon as they start the game. It's filled with annoyances (ie: Barrens chat) that detract from gameplay. I'd much rather only see my guild or party talking, people who are not annoying 24/7.
We shouldn't be complaining about the community in the beta version of the game. Wait until the second month of the game's release, when the people who want to keep their subscription open past the free month are playing. That will be the community of WAR.

and i am talking to others...just not in general chat....i hate general chats....seems to attract all the chuck norris or racist people (see AoC)
I tend to stay in the area chats, spatial and guild/group/alliance...thats it
it seems to me in the 4 servers ive tried out that the community is willing to talk in scenerios and pdqs but really everyone wants to try out every class. im normally a chatter box on the general chats but i find myself so into the game and how it plays that i frankly dont give a damn atm. im just trying to get my peekaboo of the classes and skills with my hands (as i was not in CB). Also a community that dosent talk is better than one with bigots and gold spammers. i know its only beta but hey im liking it so far.
Well the game is in time limited beta. Everyone is busy experimenting with the different classes and learning about the game. And some might stay and some might not even try the game. So really there is no point in having long winded chats. If you really into chatting try a web based chat room.
