Do you realize that T1 RvR is the smallest scale RvR available? As soon as you hit T2 keeps become involved and the areas get much much bigger each tier. One of the biggest features of this game is the RvR and how it shapes towards end game, but you never got past T1.
OP doesnt know much about RvR does he? If you think a tier 1 senerio is how endgame RvR will be, you are dead wrong. I do however respect that you will stay in WoW over WAR, that is your choice.
When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
Nice read... I totally agree, I've played way past level 8 for that one comment and the combat doesn't get more fluid FYI so level 1 or level 40 it's the SAME!. I would sit here and wrtie a review about what I liked and disliked but that would be a waste of time for the simple fact that people need to learn for themselves.
Hey Mr.OP i want you to listen closely....TY vm for the review...Having not played beta,im relying on logic based analysis of this game, not OMFGTHISGAMEROXORS........
What im garnering from this, the game merits playing for a few months..Therafter, it will become an average MMO....Some will like it more then others granted...
When Paul and Jeff were doing their collective SCHTICK,they oversold this game...
Combat changes only in specialisation, you get more skills at higher lvl, but the effectiveness depends on what mastery you chose. All with all the classes I tried in the closed beta had plenty of skills per specialisation.
It took me a long time to get used to the combat in WAR but eventually I can live with it, maybe I even started to like it. You have to keep in mind that especially in the lower lvls there is a huge difference between the class archtypes in combat. I remember a fight ith my ironbreaker in closed beta that took about 2-3 minutes for my first lvl 1 mob just because I had nly one buff skill and auto attack which is not something to rely on in this game.
I disagree with the score on the game, but I can't say how I would rate it either since to give a mmorpg a fair rating you should try multiple classes and play for at least 6 months to cover all lvl ranges of content
I think the most important flaw in this game is the hype, if you look beyond that it is a very nice game imho.

I think I agree on the hype part if that's what you mean, but I don't think WAR is an avarage mmorpg (based on my beta gameplay experience from the past months)
while the game is not the saviour to all mmorpgs, and i agree with a few points you make, its still better than anything else relased in the last 3 years, maybe 4. I find the rvr and keeps seiging friggen addictive....lol
Thanks for the review OP. I may not agree with it, but you explained your reasoning and gave your opinion. I have been playing the game for a year now and still enjoy the hell out of this game. The truely best parts of the game, to me, are the open rvr, keep fights, and city sieging. At end game the combat feels natural and fluid, to me, and all the classes are truely equipped to stand out from one another and even feel different from their "mirro" classes on the opposing side. I would give the game an 8 or 9 at this point (it would definately be a nine if they had stuck by their guns and kept 3 factions in the game, not two).
Cheers!
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
try getting to level 30. everything is easy in the beginning of every mmo. you will encounter battles that are a million times tougher. bosses you will not be able to beat as easily. most of the problems you had exist in every mmo. so sick of these i got to level 8 and this game is simple reviews.
not a very balanced review. you seemed to swing towards WoW quite a bit. anyway compared to the other more balanced reviews it is clear this game isnt the no1 (wasnt expecting it to be) and does need a little more polish (1 or 2 months maybe).
who knows. if the launch goes well i might end up getting it.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Anyone every play the first 15 levels of WoW, its dreadfully boring. Can't really BG yet, you "might" have a faster travel at this point, if not its really slow, the skills you have to date are really boring, there are not many dungeons to do, and the ones that do exist are simple and boring. Not to mention BGs weren't in the game for a long time until after release. WAR is WAY more fun than WoW was the first 15 levels. Sadly people only remember they raided Karazhan and it was fun (mind you it took 2 years to add this raid) and base the first 8 levels of a new game off of that.
VERY good review, can't even express how tired i am of WoW clones (or should i say EQ clones since wow just dumbed down EQ). EQ came out in 99 and 9 years later we still have games being produced with the EXACT SAME COMBAT SYSTEM! I'm actually playing a crappy nexon game right now just because the core of the gameplay, the combat system, is unique and different. And quest grinding? come on, i think everyone will agree that gets boring and annoying after about an hour or two. They even made it idiot proof and tell you where to go for the objectives. The pvp is just BGs, nothing really new. combat system, 9 years old. achievements have been done before (as in titles and such) PvE is a joke, no threat what so ever. no reason to group. I know this is a PvP game, but still the game that gets this element right will be the best mmo ever. MMOs are about the community. hence massively multiplayer. If i wanted to solo i would save myself 15 bucks a month and play a single player game. I will admit the game is solid for beta other than obvious bugs. It's better than WoW currently because it took WoW and improved on everything, kind of like a duh situation. anyone could've done that. yet again, nice review, i'm just ranting.
Sorry, but I doubt you've actually played the game. It's usually easy to spot those because they just regurgitate the same things, with the same inaccuracies, as found in other negative posts.
I'm a huge MMORPG cynic. I've been playing these things for over nine years, way too many hours of my life to admit to. This game is not perfect, but it's actually fun and refreshing. Internet forum reviews can not do the game justice, the positive ones nor the negative ones. The game really has to be played and played long enough to get an honest feel for it.
sorry, but i'm in the same boat as you, started playing mmos in 98 with the realm online.
Not interested in reading another "this is a WoW clone" review... play the game and you'll see that it isn't. I honestly hope most of you Open Beta "reviewers" do not sub at launch. You really seem just horrible at the game.
Originally posted by gorecki Summary: It's a perfectly competent WoW clone, that will be successful, at least in the short term, because of one thing: It's like WoW, but it isn't WoW. I.E., it will attract the WoW crowd that is bored with the game at the moment but until now couldn't find anything remotely competitive.
I think this is the closest statement I have read that echoes my experiences. Yes the game is PvP focused, yes the graphics have more poligons, but essentially this game is a WoW clone in many ways.
As far as enjoyment goes, that isn't a bad thing and it is very smart business. I never had to look up a single thing or ask anyone how something works in game yet. The game is already familiar to me on day one. At the same time it does give off the been there done that vibe.
I also shared similar first experiences as the original poster did. The graphics looked bad and animations were pretty awful. The combat was boring and just mashing a few buttons on my first few class choices.
Then I went to the dwarven lands and had a completely different experience. I really like my ironbreaker and the synergy between grudge/action points. I'm only level 8, but enjoying the class much much more than shadow warrior or archmage. The T1 dwarven area also feels much more complete. Animations, stories, world graphics are all much better than the rest of the world I experienced.
That isn't to say everything is rainbows and unicorns in the game. Pathing is still a mess, characters seem to float around, animations are a bit off, etc. There is plenty of slop that can't be explained away as "the game is still in beta" since release is just a couple days away. Overall the game should do well long term if the higher levels can deliver.
No, you USED to love MMOs, now you just spread your depression of your bordem to everyone else. Where did I seem "worked up"? I said your read made me feel depressed and emotions like depression are hard to come out from text so it must be pretty thick. I didn't say I felt insulted in any way. What constructive comments do you want? You want me to say 'You're right! Great post...", sorry I don't want to. Stop acting like you're better than the next guy, even though you're doing the exact same thing as he is. If you don't like the WoW style gameplay, go play EvE, UO, a different genre (single play RPG, FPS, Adventure game). MMOs consist of a general structure, one you are apparently tired of, so like I said, move on. It's like saying "God, why do I always have to be in First person perspective with a gun when I am playing an FPS, shooting people, this is retarded! Do something innovative!" They did do something new, they added PQs, ToK, 20 new classes with a warhammer setting. It's completely PvP based, which has been done before, but its totally different than WoW, which is all you probably really know.
Wow.
Seek therapy.
Some heavy-duty anger and bitterness there.
Every post after your first review has been attacking people and telling them to calm down, relax, and now seek therapy. You are adding nothing meaningful to the conversation, as you put it before. You're just a troll that made a new account to bash this game and apparently people that enjoy it. At no point have I been angry or bitter about anything. Read every post I've ever written here, there is no reason to get angry at people like you. Don't worry, if it makes you feel better to think everyone that thinks different than you needs therapy, keep it coming because it makes me smile.

I love how defensive people get here! Summary:
I'm happy for those of you that are enjoying yourselves in WAR. It will be successful enough to reach that critical mass so important for MMOs, ensuring that it has a future for quite some time. It is by no means a terrible, awful game. I don't care for it, and i explained it as honestly and directly as I could in a forum that is for DISCUSSION of the game.
The fact that the above sentiment upsets you and others SO MUCH is fascinating to me, b/c I simply don't associate with anyone in RL who behaves that way...I can discuss MUCH more important issues w/ people who have polar opposite views as me and laugh & smile w/ them about it the whole time.
So...if anybody freaked out like some of the above posters, i probably would tell them to seek therapy. Or, more likely, would just back away slowly and not make any threatening moves!
As a long-time closed beta tester of WAR, I wanted to defend the game and bash the OP's post. But honestly, I couldn't. It's a very reasonable review of someone's first impressions.
Both of my brothers, who were not in beta and who are pretty harsh critics, said similar things to me.
I have personally never been happy with the combat "feel", nor especially with the animations. And I told Mythic this many, many times. They have certainly made progress, but it all still feels clunky.
I love the Warhammer universe, and will play for that reason alone. And there are plenty of neat things to experience in WAR. But they really need to hunker down and improve the tactile experience of playing your character. Animation smoothness, and combat responsiveness are critical for immersion. If you kill immersion, people feel disconnected from their avatars, and end up not wanting to play.
I want to feel my character is in the world, not running on top of the world, if you get my meaning.
I find combat refreshing after the absolutely mess of a combo system AOC used and the terrible combat systems of EQ2 and CoX which I played before that.
It is like WoW with a lot more abilities, I'm liking it.
That isn't to say I disagree with everything you said, there is still some clunkiness to the combat at times but it is very smooth at times as well so I don't think it is a long term problem. Seems to be specific abilities that don't work quite right while most of them do.
Hopefully patch 4.2 which is in testing now fixes some of it~

Oh, totally agreed. Nice reply. Got a question for you, mind telling me if you think they'll up the graphics when beta ends? if there is better graphics? j/w.

I have no idea. As far as I know, everyone is running the same client. But besides optimizations, I can't see too much changing before launch.
What I can say is that this is a very skillful team of developers, and I have full confidence that most of this roughness will be resolved very soon after, if not before, launch.
And that's really my only concern with the game. I think the design elements will speak for themselves.

Without a doubt in my mind there will be graphical improvements assuming you didn't force anything outside the game. Right now you can go into control panel and force AA, AF etc and improve the graphics even though the application wont' force it by itself. I cannot imagine this not changing at release.
