I'll start by saying I've never played AoC, but I've seen the screenshots and gameplay trailers, and the graphics here are miles ahead of WoW and WAR. Why does it seem so many people are flocking to WAR over this (despite the fact that WAR is brand new)? Why doesn't this game boast the most subscribers over WoW (which has over 10 million?!). Is the gameplay flawed/what's the deal here?

It's like looking at a chick's picture on the net and she's some Brazilian super model, but then you meet her in real life and you kinda go...
Really, there's so much WRONG with it that the graphics are pretty much all it got right. And maybe the combat, but that's more of personal taste.
It's a combination of broken/flawed gameplay and idiotic devs who either don't recognize that it's broken, can't fix it, or don't care, depending on the specific issue at hand. I haven't played it, but this is the general opinion and you can find examples strewn throughout these forums.
I agree.
For once, OP. Listen to the mmorpg people, for once we make sense. Don't waste 65$ and then have Funcom steal your money! Not worth it!
The ratings are entirely because of how Funcom has managed the game from release til now. The game was released with many features broken, or in some cases outright missing. Some of these are things that are actually on the box (DX10 & pic of drunken brawling on the box but not in game, etc). Really simple things like stats weren't even working and took way too long to fix. They've been stringing people along with promised feature after promised feature after promised content, but almost nothing of actual substance has been added since launch. And now, they're already talking about an expansion when the basics of the main game aren't fixed. When people press Funcom for answers, the response is always the same - "we're aware of it and don't want to give a deadline since we'd hate to be wrong, but trust us, lots of good things(tm) are coming!"
*If* the game had been managed properly, it could have been great even with a lot of the features missing. It was pretty fun for awhile, but the single starting area gets old and the gameplay is a bit boring as you get toward the high end. And unfortunately, much of the game itself is pretty much designed to avoid socialization - you're completely solo the first 5 levels, and after that you're kept in instances with a relatively small number of people, except when you do your storyline quests which are also solo (up to level 19-20). At first, I loved the idea since it made for a good story, but then I realized that it completely removes any sense of community for the first 20 levels and that feeling seemed to carry on throughout the rest of the game.
Um... yeah, so just a couple things that bugged me.
AoC sucks overall, but don't buy into the good graphics argument. Even it's graphics are not that great, especially animations and overall performance. If you're one to buy into the "more polygons=better graphics", well I could name dozens of games that are GPU intensive and have much better graphics than AoC. WAR and even WoW's graphics are much better overall than AoC's because they use more than 3 colors and incorparate art into their graphics. Art trumps polygon-counts everytime. Want proof? EQ2 was released less than a week before WoW, with a graphics engine that even now is GPU demanding. Where is EQ2 now compared to WoW?
@OP: Rating a game is not just one value, there are different areas when you can give a value:
Graphics
Fun
Sound
Community
Role-Playing
Performance/Lag
Value
Service
Many had followd AoC for long time and was really hyped about it.
When it released it did not meed the expectations of those who thought AoC would be the 1 and only MMO giving them everything they wanted.
AoC did not meet those expectations. So I think many went in here and gave it a zero rating.
All hype aside; aoc is still a good game.
Great grapics. Great animations. New approach to melee combat.
Only site where is AoC rated so low is mmorpg.com. If you check forum here you can also see why. There isnt any other forum close to mmorpg.com AoC section (in the terms of useless posts, lies, spam and insulting). These people also rate AoC so low.
There are serious problems with AoC, but far from you can see on these boards.
Problems of graphic is, that you NEED great PC to handle it. And to run AoC on mid PCs, you need to make some tweaks (because of AoC bugs).
But if you check more important stats on mmorpg.com and thats "Most popular", you can see that AoC is still no.#2!

*numbers 2 points which i'm responding to directly before i say anything else.
1. You don't need a super computer but as Spellshaper has said it does need to be a good computer, i run an Athlon 64 X2 5600+, 2gb ram, Windows XP, 256mb GeForce 8600GT and my system was actually getting better latency and fps than most quad cores with 4gb ram and 8800GTX sli (this is based upon the moaners in OOC in game). AoC does have good graphics but sadly it's all it has going for it.
2. It's still rated number 2 due to the hype and "promises" the devs told us would be in the game at launch, only of rus to find out nothign mentioned is actually working in game or in it at all.
I was looking forward to AoC for a couple of years before it launched, it shoulld have launched sooner but the devs decided to change ALL their original gameplay ideas in favour of pleasing the BETA testers, hence the high number of delays it had and the fact that nothing originally slated as being in the game got implimented.
Because graphics cant cover up bad game mechanics, terrible patches and a management team that is completely out of touch with what players want and relies on a PR campaign of lies to sell its crapy product.
And while AoC graphics are alot better than WOW they are not that much better than WAR.
In complete objectivity, AoC is getting poor reviews because
a) They promised a LOT and did not deliver all (e.g. brawl, gear, DX10)
b) Some of the game's elements are just appauling (e.g. crafting, UI)
c) It has bugs here and there, including stats on gear not working.
d) Customer service started off on the worst foot (e.g. where was CS?)
If you make abstraction of a), b) and c), AoC is by far the best looking, best animated and probably the first true 3rd generation fantasy MMO out there. Combat is a lot of fun and the world is very pretty, all packed with FANTASTIC music and sounds.
Bringing back the subjectivity, you will enjoy if with 1, 2 and maybe 3 toons, but after that rerolling is a major pain in the butt. Crafting is a waste of time in its existing form and harvesting is also something to ponder.
It has a solid foundation to build upon, and if Funcom get their asses together they can still turn this around, WAR and WOTLK or not.
one of the reasons is it just didn't deliver on the PvP as most of the Guilds and People I know from other PvP games just uped and left after the first month.
just had a bad launch and needed more time to be finished... soo in about a year the game will probably be very very good just gotta give it time
played then stopped.
gave it high marks for the graphics..
low marks for every thing else......
Obvious troll .... dont bite - its terrible!

OK im gonna bite but put this in words you can understand.... from a post I made a few days back....
While the little emoticons should keep you occupied for a moment lets consider the vast posting about really a myriad of topics covering AOC's complete and utter failings as an MMO, but for clarities sake lets limit them to 3 and compare the game to a relationship.....
1) Most of the features on the BOX at LAUNCH, not to mention those features touted, in numerous ads in print, audio, video and every other form of ad spam possible, by the developers were not in the game. Many are not in the game TODAY, this very moment youre reading this article. And probably wont be when you happen across this article in say december of this year or even march 2009 for that matter. This is roughly the same as the first time you get to see the girl youve decided to date without makeup. At this point youre a lil shocked but you know her and she is familiar and youve already moved some of your stuff to her hourse or vice versa. Roughly the same way we all felt as we began to notice that AOC was not what they had been promising us all along. However, some of us had purchased new PC's, upgraded old ones, or spent alot of time telling our buddies how HOT our new game was to be able to admit to ourselves that the game flat out sucked and we couldnt live with her anymore.
2) After the bait and switch there are PROMISES. Now there are promises one makes for life, like for example, getting married. I did not want to marry AOC, though I did hope to have a long and wonderful relationship with this game. Now that being said, as it is in every relationship, you can only take being lied to so many times. June of this year she promised me PVP, June came and passed and then she changed her target date to July, but after august came and passed I pretty much had figured out that she was cheating on me with a guy name ERLING or something like that and they were eating and drinking merrily off my credit card.
3) Then she stops taking your phone calls. Well we've all been there, the sad lil place you arrive at in a relationship when you aren't quite sure its worth giving up on and you try to reason with her, at which point her annoying bitch friend named Jenny steps in and starts answering the phone and hanging up on you.
This is roughly the same thing that took place in Age of Conan. Now taking into account that Erling Ellison or whatever the hell his name is looks like his chances of getting any action outside the bounds of the red light district hover somewhere around that of the pope converting to ISLAM. They chose to turn to the community to be their lil JENNY FRIEND and convert what was left of the FANBOIS into devoted and misguided Conan Nazis patrolling the forums with all the zeal of good little facists and all the power of a paid funcom employee. Banning anyone that DARED speak the truth of what was actually going on in the game and with the development arc.
I do expect that at some point AOC will come crawling back to me via email, begging me to come back and give the NEW HER a shot again. She will talk of the old times we had together and try to suck me into yet another round of female induced hysteria. She will promise the world and in the end I will remember being banned from the forums and remember that I hate that bitch JENNY so much that nothing short of giving me a Mercedes could make me want to endure the treatment I suffered from the JENNIES of the forums and I will promptly HANG UP on FUNCOM.
If this is the sort of MMO experience you are seeking - HAVE AT IT - but you wont even respect yourself in the morning.

Pros:
1.) New combat system: not all that innovative IMO-you still button mash just more to do so!
2.) Good graphics
Can't really think of any more Pro's than that.
Cons:
1.) Never delivered on what they promised (Drunken brawling, Sieges, Raiding ect.). The Raid grouping was broken from launch. A.K.A false advertisment.
2.) Classes not being balanced for PVP.<--- This is referring to certain classes one shotting, exploits ect.
3.) No (stable) mid-to end game content-sure there were things to do! like grinding, this was also apart of there pre-lauch hype, that there wasn't going to be much grinding per FC advertisement.
4.) Server stabiltity- Out of Memory crashes, group bugs (got better), and raiding groups getting flipped due to instancing.
5.) The instances (zones) are very small. IMO
6.) Community relations- They have the worst community relations dept, in the history of MMO's. IMO, they banned alot of players for minor infractions and have also suspended accounts for asking certain questions. (to GM's and on there official forums).
IMO this game isn't worth playing right now, Its possible for them to maybe turn things around, but even then its going to take alot of time and by then I'm sure its going to be too late. This game basically mirrored the release of Vanguard (in alot of aspects).
So in my conclusion to the OP. Play Warhammer, I've been playing it since open beta launch and it has been going pretty good in all dept's.
