Graphics: Is there no pleasing people?

If the graphics are highend and complex, what do people complain about?

- "I cant enter the capital city, I get like 2 frames"
- "Damn necros and all their pets, every time im close to one my framerate goes to hell!"
- "I cant target him, im getting like no frames with all these people around"

This endless whining id hear almost daily in AoC. Yes the game was very preety and graphically advanced, but what effect would you have on a large amount of people when the action got complex? Their frame rates would tank and they would become ineffective and unresponsive.

So do people REALLY expect to have the majority of people be able to have a playable game when there are 100+ people in your immediate proximity? The RvR battles in WAR get huge. There are no artificial limitations like in AoC. So if you get 200 people showing up at your keep to break down the doors, do you think it will be fun if youre getting 1 FPS?

Mythic chose gameplay over graphics, THANK GOD. If graphics were king, games like AoC and Crysis would be ruling supreme and scraping everyone else from the bottom of their boots. And a game like WoW, with cartoony pastel color graphics with trees that looked like squares would have bombed within 6 months. WoW is complete proof that gameplay is more important than graphics, and like it or not, a smart developer will invest more resources into gameplay than graphics. Funcom did it backwards, and ask anyone who has played the endgame, fancy graphics mean nothing if you have a severe lack of content.

Therefore with WAR, we are stuck with "ugly graphics" such as the pics I took yesterday:

If you think thats ugly, well then, go play AoC or Crysis. You have a choice, WAR isnt the only game in town.

Honestly the bottom line is people need something and will find something to complain about. For me personally the graphics are fine, and I could really care less about how it looks as long as I am having fun. For others if the game doesn't look like Crysis on max then they think it sucks. To each thier own.

The graphics look fine to me, I can hardly wait to see them for myself first hand!

If you can't "Have your cake & eat it too", then how can "The proof of the pudding be in the eating"?

Funny thing is that people complain that graphic are sub-part, but get a game like AoC that as much eye candy, and people got zomg i canz play dis shit!11!1!

After eveything I have read, I was expecting not a lot on the graphics front; however your screenshots show that there is not a lot to complain about.

Obviously, with a big RvR ongoing, even if there was high end graphics, you would only be scaling them down so you can play. I rember when the DAoC labyrthin came out, and I had to turn off so much of the eye candy to keep playing as the action was frantic in there.

The animations, effects and model faces are mediocre at best. Some are down right atrocious (unless you enjoy looking like a 50 year old who hasn't slept for two weeks, has been through a meatgrinder and got a totempole shoved up his rear end). The rest is fine and will probably look even better with the full retail client.

The retail client will probably contain higher resolution textures and more advanced lighting effects. AA and AF isn't in beta as well.

Yar...Conan is gorgeous (if you can actually use medium+ settings), but I was always getting very spastic FPS.  I would much rather have a pretty good looking game that is playable than a gorgeous game that is choppy.

Animations and effects are just not perfectly sync'd yet (sometimes they are even broken). If they keep on making progress on this subject like they did with the latest patches we can expect a much smoother experience at launch - of course there is no guarantee.

Your comment about the faces is purely subjective.

I dunno, some people think this screenshot is better than WAR apparently...

Apparently original EQ had better graphics according to some posters on this site.

    How about EQ2 maybe?

    Nope still not seeing it.

WAR graphics match up to anything but AOC and maybe the eastern MMO's.

Last time I looked at the Warhammer Fantasy Minitures ...which is often online since people post their armies..they weren't Exactly "pretty" If you want "Pretty" Play the Elves and dont' choose faces with Scars.  Personally I think the faces are awsome I love picking out ones where their face appears to be mauled so they're missing an eye.

The animations are actually really well done some arent' finished of course.  The animations AUTO Scale down the more people on screen to reduce lag which is soemthing people aren't used too.  People are used to doing it themselves.  The effects when the server isn't to lagged to notice are pretty awsome.  Its pretty cool when huge plumes of smoke bust up in your face making it impossible to see the enemy for a few seconds ... Cover Fire...a Witch Hunter's friend.

To be honest whether or not the graphics, animations etc are mediocre or not is completely subjective.  They're Up to Date but not top end.  They're better than WoW but they arent' Crysis (a shitty game that was nothing but pretty pictures).

I dont understand what the deal is with some people they love graphics and call games with top end the best game in the world but if your a real Gamer someone who enjoys 'gaming' and you buy this awsome leet pretty game and the Gameplay sucks your wondering who the fraks shat in your cereal.  I'm tired of graphics loving non gamers who pretend to be gamers Shatting in my Cereal.  I want fun games, decent graphics that run good...I don't need top end i must make my computer bleed graphics with a crap game.

This is WAR people are supposed to look Ravaged.   IF you want WoWhammer or Age of Boobs the exit is <------- that way.

This is exactly what I am looking forward to as well. I have followed the Warhammer franchise for the last twenty years & love it's anarchic sense of humour & chaotic graphical style.

WAR comes out in 2008 (almost 2009) with 4-5 years old graphics, they only added some higher res textures.. Period.

As for AoC, I'm am running the game with everything maxed out and I never had any framerate issues. If your PC can't handle current gen graphics, then upgrade or play games that are made for it, like WAR with 4-5 years old graphics.

As for gameplay, I think WAR is the only mmorpg that I could not make myself login anymore after level 10. The overall feeling was like playing WoW again, with worse pve gameplay. The same old... same old... So boring. As for rvr, it was fun for a short while, but that's it. I even had more fun in free 2 play games like Shaiya, Rappelz or Perfectworld; so why pay for WAR? I left Aoc 2 months ago and didn't want to resub until the promised features were in, but playing 10 levels in WAR made me resub to AoC yesterday (and WOW what a difference it was!). AoC's atmosphere is just so much better, I think cartoon games like WAR aren't for me anymore.

the only problem that i ahve is that the video cardes are totaly hindering to older machines.  I cant play the game due to the fact they wont let a 6200 Nvidia card over a GFX5200-5300 which is totaly lame.  What I can play before the game crashes and makes my vido a 16bit 800x600 screen is wicked cool i could care less if the game was mud bsed but wicked content.

If you think AoC has MORE atmosphere then I simply can't take you seriously.

If you think AoC has BETTER atmosphere then that is fine.

AOC is horrible and I mean horrible. The combat system is boring as heck, I grew out of simon says 30 years ago. I have never been more bored of the PvE in a game than I was with AOC by level 40. Seems we just disagree on things and that is fine~.

As for WAR being 4 year old graphics, you are being absurd. The graphics are better than WoW, better than EQ2 and at least in the same realm as LOTRO or Vanguard and in my opinion WAR is better. The only western MMO I've played with clearly better graphics is AOC.

  • Tuck2000Tuck2000 Member Posts: 361

What the hell do people want WAR graphics are a happy balance for RvR you are not going to get 100 v 100 on a screen if you try the AOC way with graphics so they have come up witha nice looking "PLAYABLE" enviroment that will support the masses. If you don't like it don't play it's that simple. And if you don't think the animations and AOE are good go play RvR in a peak period when 20 Bright Wizards are nuking the whole dam area you will get a nice firework display.

Yes, what I see in WAR is 4 year old graphics with improved textures. Take WOW, put a little higher res textures, and you have WAR (art is different but still very close). It's just some higher res textures, the game engine isn't using any current gen features.

I don't know what the problem people are having with graphics..

When I first got into beta, I was on a 4-year old machine. AMD Athlon64 XP +3200 (Single core, 2.2Ghz.. OLD), 2 Gigs of DDR400 Ram, and a Geforce 6600. It was just below minimum specs on the processor side, and the bus and ram were slow, to say nothing of the outdated graphics card. I never had a single crash that wasn't the server going down.  It looked like WoW did. It's what I expected.

I just got a brand new computer before Open Beta started. AMD X2 6000 (3Ghz), 4 Gigs of DDR800, and a Geforce 260 GTX..... The graphics are FREAKIN' AWESOME. Still no crashes, not a single major problem on this machine either.

How anyone can complain about the graphics is beyond me. If you're expecting a brand new game too look brand new, you need a brand new machine. Running a new game on a 4 year old machine will NOT give a game that looks brand new.

Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

No, even drawing distance is much shorter than several 4 year old games.  You can't see anyting in the distance, it's all grey. Compared to WOW, WAR just has some higher res textures, nothing more. There is no current gen engine feature in WAR.

I didn't find AOC combat any faster paced than WAR is the difference I guess. AOC required a lot less thought as it was more limited in abilities and each ability took longer (took roughly 6 seconds to get off a full combo at end level vs 1.4 seconds for most in WAR). Like I said not only was AOC combat nothing special, it was downright terrible. Some poorly implemented console combat system from a single player game.

So WAR is just like WOW only better so it is 4 years old? Um ok. MMORPG games are generally behind the times a bit in general but name one MMORPG that has come out as much as 3 years ago that clearly has better graphics than WAR. I sure can't think of one, the only one I can think of at all is AOC.

No I don't expect a game built around mass PvP to have AOC graphics and I think Funcom might be regretting their choice right now since sieges still play like crap and they lost 90% of their playerbase.

Do you think if WAR looked like Crysis it would run well? With 10 people on the screen? With 50? How about with 200? How many computers would sustain that? At 1920*1200 resolution? Do you really think everyone has a 4870 X2 with 4GB RAM?

AoC chokes on many peoples systems during a siege battle. And were talking a max of 40 vs 40. WAR will exceed that, significantly. Therefore it CANNOT look like AoC and remain playable. It just wont happen, so keep dreaming.
