Is playing the market a good way to make money with industrial ships, as in buying low selling high? Or is it more worthwhile to do missions? And I really would rather not do mining. Please help.

Sure you can play the market - but your profits for runs will be around the 10% mark... if you already have millions, its good money.
for starters, just do missions.
ya, from what I remember you need to play with millions at a time to make any substantial profits...
Except by the time you've made that much cash you would have been on lvl3 missions rounding lvl4 for when Shiva comes and made way more cash so you could have done the "market-playing" in millions later and saved yourself way more time.
Although in many ways market-playing is unethical. It's partially what has lead to the current economical depression in EVE, which is probably not at it's height yet.

Playing the market used to be profitable, at least in Yulai, but with so many people trying to learn how to play it, the market for good mins is in the toilet. I used to be able to sell megacyte there for 6700 isk per unit, during the weekend it was down to 6000 per unit. Now when you are talking about selling 15000 units of megacyte, that is about a 10 mil difference. It is starting to settle down, with sell orders for about 6150, wooooo. But a few weeks ago I could easily make 2-4 mil a night logging in twice a day for a couple minutes, but I did start with 90mil in isk.

When I did that I was doing lvl1 missions and those market transactions made much more money then lvl1 missions. Now that i have access to lvl3 agents it is a diff story.

The reason high ends are so cheap right now is not due to high supply. Every sector of 0.0 is involved in some sort of great war and leaves little time to actually sit and mine. I have sat at work and watched two idiots get into a bidding war for mins. While bidding wars are fine, just be smart about it. If someone is selling mins for 6700, try to sell yours at 6999 or 6995, don't jump to 6500, because then the origional seller will lower below you and the process will repeat. Everyone wants to sell their mins and make a quick profit at usually a much reduced price. Raise the price and wait a few more hours, the isk is worth it.

Well I don't know if i'd call the current prices cheap, back when I was playing at launch I recall zyd selling for about a fourth of the price and mega at over a half of what it is now, which I also believe were originally the "base prices" (if there exists such a thing) that CCP had wanted to set on those minerals, but I suppose that if the player run market ran those prices up, then that's realistic and fair.
Back to your comment, yes undercutting is also a huge factor in it, however this still isn't the type of market-playing which we were talking about.

I think just about pretty much all of the mineral prices are where they should be. There are a few deviations, like Mexallon and Zydrine, but by and large all of the mins are around their NPC prices. Money is being introduced into the game faster than ships have been blown up, so you can pretty much expect this inflation to cause prices to steadily rise.
As far as playing the market is concerned, I think you can do some massively profitable things. For instance, 2 months ago I bought 500 mil worth of morphite, because I had a hunch it was going to go up with the steady introduction of new Tech 2 items. I figured I'd make around 100-200 mil profit. I was pleasantly surprised. A month later, prices had more than doubled, and I sold it all, making around 550 mil profit.
And there are a lot of opportunities like that. Look at implants, for instance. There's another area I invested in. When they were 5 mil a piece, I thought "this can't last!" so I bought up all I could find. A month later, they had quadrupled in value.
If you are looking for a more steady, long term approach to investing and "playing the market", then try investing in the lowest ends--- tritanium and pyrite. From the start, they have only gone up and practically never have decreased in value. While there are miners that appreciate the relaxing atmosphere of empire space, there are more miners that want to work their way up to 0.0 mining... and not the other way around. This attitude contributes to the continual rise of tritanium and pyrite.
At any rate, my two cents on playing the market.
Very good post. You hit the inflation issue dead on. When I first started playing, Zydrine sold for 1024. Now it's cracking 5000.
Another tip for playing the market is to transport items into different regions. For example Isogen is isanely more expensive in lonetrek than it is in Essence due to the lack of Isogen type ores in the area. Last night I was in lonetrek needing to buy some Iso and considering both amount for sell and price the best price was 90 isk each in Nonni. In essence You can buy that same amount for 75-80 each. Also it's good to check the smaller markets every once in a while because a lot of times some great deals go unnoticed. For example Everyshore is a decent sized market but considerably smaller than Essence. You can regularly get trit for under 2 in that area while in Essence you're struggling to keep it closer to 2 than 3.
Except by the time you've made that much cash you would have been on lvl3 missions rounding lvl4 for when Shiva comes and made way more cash so you could have done the "market-playing" in millions later and saved yourself way more time.

100% TRUE !
