Hype Deflation

UzikUzik Member UncommonPosts: 281

What is going on with this?  Is this just a result of all the people from the various game forums giving every game but their own a 1 on the hype-meter?

    I haven't.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Seems there was a call to do that in a thread of some game's forum.

Well, the only game forum I follow is Darkfall, and there was indeed a post about how Darkfall had recently moved up in hype.

However, seeing the recent decrease in all games (including Darkfall) I would imagine there have been similar posts made all over.

hype is also factored by page views, posts, etc in specific gaming forums on this site. So right now, WAR is about to launch and is dominating web views....so yes others will drop like a ton of bricks right now

yeah probably the darkfall guys dehypging anything around it...........

hehe but should sort itself out, remember War moves off it in a few days

  • DracusDracus Member Posts: 1,449

I've noticed the hype rankings as well.  No other game in development except for WAR is above a 7.00.

I'm not putting blame to anyone, just that it is interesting to see.

    And that is why...

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.

Actually hype is purely vote based there is a separate meter for page views and hits under a separate listing on the front page.

This is what the counter for page views and posts looks like, does NOT correspond to the hyper meter at all.

Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning

Outside of this site on other forums there have a been several games that have indeed called for the down rating of other games, and the up rating their games. It is a rather childish thing to do in my opinion and I see no reason for it. It harms the community as a whole.

The hype meter was never honestly a good way to tell how a game is doing, as this happens a lot. It is very rare that people fairly rate the games. You have a lot of people that are rating the games they are looking forward to a 10, and all other games a 1, without really any reason.

Yeah, your right...it has been proven. A grand total of 8 Darkfall fans did this...8! I'm so sure that those 8 individuals had such a drastic effect on the hype meters especially since Darkfall had no less than 29 negative hypes in the same time frame. 8 vs 29...Wow the Darkfall fans should be so ashamed of themselves for trying to combat the out and out Trolls that are doing it to their game. Get a clue please. The meters here are graded on a curve so that no game will ever be a perfect 10. It's the prerelease Hype for WAR that is driving all of the other games hype down and has nothing to do with Darkfall. This is especially apparent when you consider that Darkfall's hype is falling at the same rate of every other game on the list.

Usually people who already hyped the game at 8 or so comes back and lowers it because of something that affected their opinion over the game such as forum activity, developer interviews, etc.

This happens to EVERY hype meter game. For example, some upcoming release game fans will come here and spam all the other mmo hype meters to one and in retliation those who scored the game higher will come and rescore that game even lower because of the actions of the first group of people who came here to lower all the other games.

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

LOL how do you magically know it was 8 people? And even if it was, you can clearly see they have made multiple accounts. Go look at the hype comments, most have 2 posts, the requirement to post hype. Also look at the comments on other games, you will see a bunch of "DF rulez" and "DF 2008" spammed on the other games hype. There was also a thread on the official Darkfall forums calling for people to come here and dehype every other game while hyping darkfall.

And if you haven't noticed, WAR's hype has dropped lately too, which would bust your "WAR's hype is driving other games down" theory.

Darkfall's hype is only falling now due to people just like me that have figured out what the Darkfall community is doing and changing our own hype ratings to compensate.

But I'm sure you knew all of this already, and are just defending the immature community in your precious little game that you know little about, or you are just trying to cover up your own immature actions.

Well, there is definately something odd going on with the hypemeters.  Do not think I have ever seen it where every game in the development section (almost) had the same hype.  6.96, 6.96, 6.96, 6.96, 6.94, 6.94?  And fo course it only happened when darkfall magically moved up to number 2, number 1 after WAR releases.  Too many coincidences to be completely free of specualtion that people are screwing with it.

People skew the numbers often.  As has been said, the DF fans are doing some right now.  Naturally, I tossed a "1" at it just so that between me and one of them voting a 10...it would balance out to a number I found more reasonable for a game with so little to show.

Its not a big deal really...its just a hype meter.  Worry more about the rating meter.  All games suffer from skewed hype...and, really, thats kinda the point of hype when you think about it.

Yes. Its all the alternate accounts people make in the Darkfall thats creating that to happen. They vote all the other games down so it will eventually all look the same. Before darkfall fans decided to create alts and spam the hypemeters, all of the hype meters were similiar but with various results. When Darkfall members spam the hype meters of other games to one, the numbers will adjust like that.

Also, creating alts is not allowed on mmorpg.com but if you see the darkfall area, they all were created in the last week with just enough rating to let them hype darkfall up and everything else down.

But as I said, they are the only ones who takes the hype meter so seriously. Before the release the bad graphic video of Darkfall, the hype meters were just something mmorpg.com had as a perk. Now, some darkfall followers (about 10 of em with 4 alts a piece) are following the hype meter like some weird religious event.

    Agree.

This is exactly what I am talking about.

I took Aion, for example, and looked at the last six days. During the last six days, 96% of all the people who gave it a horrible review were Darkfall forum members (meaning they have only posted in Darkfall and nowhere else). ALL but seven only has 2 posts to their count and most of the negative posts were all done between September 11 to September 8 (Sept 8 was the date on the official forumfall darkfall forums where one of the darkfall members here posted over there about coming here and lowering everyone elses score and hyping their own. When other people then lowered the darkfall hype, they freaked out and stated that the moderators are against darkfall and they lowered the darkfall hype on purpose. Its really a soap opera).

The list (feel free to look at their profiles if you doubt me):

    Dreign

    LastDiviner

    flopper3

    Zoolio

    Toilweed

    Thaeds

    Darkfallb

    Secton

    Forumfall02

    Nileq

    Genleo

    Ejnomad07

    Supernoob81

    Endread

    Tomigutt

    Bjoernbitter

    Oriphus

    Forumfall01

    Legrand20

    Elihup

    Thorpeyrox

    Vooduder

    123dadada

    Aranin

    Bloodlash

    Imbant

    Sir_Kevbo

    Gnomore

    Sentrysteve

    Enddream

    Undiesusa

    lachrymoseQQ

    bongloads

    Salo

    Angelsfang

    Originalegg

    M0j0mann

    Strongaxe

    Sandboxy

    Suxortobu

    Javac

    Kosk

    Wardog250

    rhale

This was just Aion. I could bet you anything all the other hype metered games will have the same results. Darkfall forum visitors cry fail when people say stuff about Darkfall, but with immaturity like this they cannot serioulsy argue why people do that.

They should reset all hype meters every 3-6 months at random times. This isn't a final solution but it might keep the hype meters a little fresher and up to date.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

I think they should get rid of em all together. They are nothing more than ego trips to the enemy lines to lower the enemies score nowadays.

I agree, they are far more trouble than they are worth. The unique hits numbers are far more acurate as to what games are the most popular anyways. The Hype meter only sparks these types of debates and no one trusts it anyways. It would be a good thing to do away with it entirely.

To the person that replied to my last post in this thread.....No, although I do like darkfall I only gave it a 7 on the hypemeter as that is as high as I'll go on a game I haven't personally played. Any others that I hyped are other game's I'm interested in and I hyped them accordingly. Games I have no interest in don't get hyped by me as that would be immature. Everyone should do this but unfortunately they don't. This includes a lot of people and not just Darkfall fans. The only reason it pisses me off is because since the video came out people have been accusing DF fans of the very thing that others have been doing to Darkfall for years. Go and look at the comment history for the DF hype meter and you'll find that people have been de-hyping Darkfall and leaving very Trollish comments for about 6 or more years now. Not that I would do it personally but it's about time DF fans started to fight back and the ones that seem to be screaming the loudest about it now are the ones that have been doing it to Darkfall for the last 6 years.

So yes, I fully agree that MMORPG.com should just get rid of it entirely. All it does most of the time is stir up hate, discontent and conspiracy theories. This site would be a lot better off without it.

I agree with everything you said, but as a comment I'll add, don't you think the simple fact that Darkfall has been on the hype meters for 6 years merit a little bit of negative hype?
