I never had experienced any issues with VG in my old PC...but it was struggling to run the game performance-wise, so the gameplay experience lacked in that field. So here I am now, with my brand new high-end machine thinking I could at last experience the game the way it was meant to be played; a grave mistake on my part. The game runs perfect from the FPS perspective...but crashes every 10 min. I'm not exaggerating: every 10 min it will either crash to desktop, or worse make a forced PC reboot.
Needless to say I have tried everything, have the latest video and sound drivers but, alas, nothing will fix this. I'm really disappointed because I thought Windows XP Pro SP3 were a stable platform. Apparently I was wrong (and VG is a very poorly coded program), and this combination is detrimental.
I have a high end PC and the game runs great. Was it assembled properly? Are you adjusting your settings?
Seriously, this game has been stable AND running very well for over a year now. Could be your drivers or other software you have installed. One thing I find is that a lot of people have a LOT of crap loaded into memory (look at the bar next to your clock in the bottom right hand corner, if that's blocked with icons, then yeah expect crashes). Also, if you're using Vista, optimize it for performance. It'll turn off the Aero interface and help you with your system stability.
The problem has been solved, it was caused by unstable RAM timings
My system specs, since some people asked:
Gigabyte P35-DS3 mainboard
Intel C2D E8400 (stock clock speeds)
Kingston HyperX D2LLK2/2GN RAM (2x1GB, DDR2 800); this was supposed to run at 4-4-4-12 timings, however when Auto-detect is enabled it is read as 5-5-5-16. Since changing that no further problems were experienced.
Connect3D Ati 4850 512MB
2x Samsung 500GB Spinpoint F1 (SATA2, 32MB buffer)
Thermaltake TR2 500W
Edit: I did get one reboot yesterday when alt-tabing VG and trying to run Firefox to search something...but that was only once, I can normally play VG now for hours without any issues...

"forced PC reboot" mean 100% hardware problem. Typically its not enought power supply, but if you have crash to desktop sometimes this looks more like incompatibility or even worst defect component. Just bring your new PC to warranty support before it expire. To accept your PC for support more easy try to reproduce the problem with 3DMark2006 ( I dont know if there is not even newer already).

well i dont see why slower timings would do that personally maybe the 16 should of been a 18 or the voltage on the ram was not good for those timings ram is so finicky when it comes to its .1+/- VDC hehe. Well thats good that its working though.

It was unstable running at 4-4-4-12 and worked running at 5-5-5-16 as said earlier in the thread. He changed into 5-5-5-16 not from.

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
