Funcom's ability to generate profits is what it all comes down too. Ao a game with 10-20k players a majority of which are froobs that pay no money. AOC a game that is bleeding to death at a slow and steady pace. A reputation that is ruined for years as cheats, cons and liars. Then we have an upcoming bug fix expansion that nobody is going to buy as its paying twice for the same product promised at launch. Will you pay twice for false promises? Now add on a massive debt that has put an execution date on your company. This company is not profitable. How many here plan on buying the aoc bugfix expansion or the secret world knowing now how funcom does business?
Probably 100% of the people who are still playing the game in December will buy the expansion when it comes out next year!!!
Next question. Of all the women in the USA who have been beaten by their husbands and put in the ER 5 times or more.. how many of them go back to that same husband?

By dec how many will that be? There is no way they still have 400k. The game is bleeding we all know that its just how many are insane enough to stay. I doubt it will be enough to keep funcom alive though all the debt they have accumulated. Also don't forget fc doesn't make 100% profit of box sales.

I'm sorry, I should have used ( /irony or /pun or /sarcasm) in my post. Funcom will sell the expansion to 100% of the people who are still playing in December.. but that will be such a small number it won't matter. The expansion is insignificant when it comes to the health of Funcom. The first reason is that it isn't going to launch this year, and by next year Funcom will be out of business... the second reason, as you said, is that developers only get a small portion of the sales of an expansion.
If they pull off a mircale and launch the expansion tomorrow and sell it to all 400k subscribers they have (/cough), it will bring in about $4M to Funcom.. which is an insignficant number compared to the 23M in short term debt and -16M in cash flow.
I really do hope a hostile takeover of funcom occurs. The only way this company is going to be saved is to be taken over and have the entire company restructured with competent people. The rights to conan and anarchy Ips should be worth something to some company. The time for it to happen will be soon if the falling trend continues maybe even this week fc will reach $5.

I currently play, yet I completely agree. That would be the best outcome here, it's also an outcome that could very well happen. Time will tell I suppose.

This is a classic case of supression of free speech. Remember the fiasco over at Gamespot when that guy made a honest review of Kane & Lynch and was fired because the publisher had placed an ad and disliked his point of view. This is a very sickening case of censorship if this site caters to its advertisers hand out rather than the people who visit it. Journalistic integrity flies out the window with this sort of thing, but hey there is like 80,000 typos in just about every article written at this site so maybe im expecting too much from kindergarten caliber professionalism. This place may be as incompetent and ignorant as Funcom is.

Not in the slightest, you have no right to free speech here. It's their way or the highway, you want to post anything you want with no repercussion go to an indie site, who doesn't receive money for advertising. Otherwise follow the rules those who provide this forum to you expect you to follow.

I must admit to being 100% behind you here. Erling Ellison lied and the AOC name DIED.
And you missed a point I made early on They LOST money and had 16M in negative cash flow WHEN they had 800k box sales and 415k subscribers. Yes, you are right, they could cut costs and be cash flow neutral..... if they had 800k box sales and 415k subscribers in September. For anyone who wonders why the stock price/financials matter.. Now you know why the pvp patch that was promised in June still hasn't been released, they have few devs still working on the game.
I'll join back on this discussion when they publish their q3 report. No need to say I disagree.
However, their development progress is horrible. The most interesting thing for me is DX10. I mostly wanted AoC because of it. Yet it wasn't in the game.
In their report, it's listed as a long term focus. In my view, long term is 1 year at least. By the time they finish it and polish it, every major game is going to be DX10.

Especially considering that in the grand scheme of things, funcom has done nothing but released an unfinished MMO, just like they all are. You guys are comparing this game and its developers to the like of true scams (Dark and light, Wish, countless others), when they are not even close. I chalk this up to inexperience in the genre. Many people here can’t separate their personal tastes VS. The label of “Crap”, Conan was never to be all things to all people, it is really OK for it just to be not your thing, and move on.
I hope karma comes back to you, because we all know how brave people are when it comes to anonymity on the internets. Even Mythic has gotten a share of this, with the EU release, and the death threats, many of you are simply unreasonable people protected/empowered by the anonymity of a user name.
It is very sad the Lengths this campaign has gone.

Sorry, I get that one confused with another of the time...just need to recall its name. Still my point stands, this game isn’t comparable to true scams, and the treating it as such is ludicrous.
Wish may not have been a scam, but AOC is not as well, in fact this has gone to the point of harassment. If you can’t call Wish a scam, then you can’t call AOC one as well. The thread I started on funcom stock falling is locked now and I have gotten a mod warning. I would like someone in charge to comment on this. We are not allowed to discuss the stock prices of game companies anymore?
hey, just looked into this (which by the way is what would have happened if you had followed the proper channels and contacted community@mmorpg.com instead of making this attention-seeking post) and found that you only have one warning on file, and that was for posting in teh wrong forum. I'm not sure where this original thread was posted, but a mod felt that it was in the wrong area and you were issued a warning (General Discussion instead of AoC, maybe?).
Seriously man, if you're gonna run around making accusations, you could have been clear about the fact that you weren't warned for writing about stock prices, you were warned for posting in the wrong forum.
You don't like Funcom, we get it. Doesn't mean you're being discriminated against, and the warning was quite clear on that.
I would hate to see that happen, I would not like this site to become like gamespot where it seems a sponsor has it's deep pockets influence what goes on the site.
The problem is that many players have lost sight of what these forums are for. They aren't fan forums they are private forums that are made available (free I might add) so that players can discuss games. However, it takes money to run them.
So if you want, (and I mean the "royal you") you can start your own site and have your members say whatever they want about any game.
But for a site on this level they need revenue. How do they get that? They sell advertising. And no company is going to advertise on a site where the players are hostile to their product.
To that end, if you had a product you wouldn't advertise on a site that lambasted it.
Now, you might say "but I'd use that as a wake up call to make the product better". True and good for you. However, if you can't make it better over night and you have employees to pay and rent to pay and equipment to maintain and insurance to pay and 401k's to pay into and medical etc, then you are most likely not going to be able to afford to advertise on a site that is hostile to your company.
If this is true players shouldn't come here looking for the truth about games or unbiased reviews should they? This site would be hostile to the player if this is the case.

When someone gives you false information, promises you things, then takes your money and doesn't deliver what they promised.
If that doesn't describe AOC, nothing does. All those posts from the devs about 'seiging will be ready for launch'... having dx10 on the box.... the bait and switch with the tortage beta... that all screams 'scam'.
I'd love to hear your definition of a scam that doesn't include everything funcom did the month before launch.

I want them to lose their jobs! ABSO-FRIKKING-LUTELY.... They lied - they kept the NDA up - has it ever been lifted? - They promised Dx10 on the BOX and where is it? Still not in the game...... ETC ETC ETC - they lied and the game sucks..... What part of me should want them to continue doing these sorts of things?
I built two brand new PCs... About 2200 dollars... Bought TWO CE editions of this game from Gamespot.com @ 89.99 each and with shipping that was about 200$ and then bought two 6 month subscriptions to the game..... I cant see doing anymore to support them... what did I get in return? LIED to and a piece of crap alpha like release of a game that should be ashamed to call itself a GAME! I have ever right to be pissed and vengeful at this point- Im sorry I dont agree with you but I DONT!

This is untrue. MMORPG.COM is very generous with what they allow us to post. Of course that might be because they realize that they probably won't be seeing advertising from Funcom again any time soon LOL. But honestly, I think MMORPG.COm is going a good job with not being to nazi with us.
News, reviews, more than likely hype, and most than likely just about every aspect of every online gaming community website is on the take. Welcome to the world, money talks, bullshit walks. Especially at GameSpy, more than likely no different here.

There should be an entry in Websters:
Scam: a confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, esp. for making a quick profit; swindle see also Age o Conan, Funcom, Erling Elingson, Gaute Godager
Yes AOC is certainly not a scam. They just commited fraud to hide the reality of their product to boost their sales.
Well said, Well spoken BG. (chevy chase to the bad guys in Seems like old times)
If they committed fraud why hasn't anything been done about it? Fraud is a criminal offense, giving the victims every right to seek vindication. Why haven't you, it's been months now? I've yet to see the headlines, yes there will be headlines if this happens.

You know. All the time you spend on your bitterness towards a company that didn't deliver what you expected could be used to cover your economic expenses in other ways. Is this the first time in life you got shafted by a company? Well life is tough lad. It will not be the first time. Maybe I should start my private war against some fast food franchise because they don't deliver what I expect.
Large beverage companies give you commercials that gives you the impression you will be succesful and happy if you drink their product. Isn't gaming companies allowed to exaggerate aswell? Why don't you start a personal vendetta against them? I have a strong feeling that you get paid to say the write the words you do, but then again you will probably blame me for getting paid from Funcom.
Stocks. Yes Funcom suffered from bad news, but look around on the market as a total. It's bleeding. It's red as blood. Almost all stocks are suffering! You sound like a smart guy, I don't believe you don't know this.
Just some thoughts from a guy that i sick of bitterness and a negative world in all.

If this is true players shouldn't come here looking for the truth about games or unbiased reviews should they? This site would be hostile to the player if this is the case.
Haven't read the rest of the thread, but wanted to point out that WISH wasn't a scam. I worked opn that one and while it did indeed turn out to be vaporware (cancelled mid-beta), it certainly wasn't a scam as no pre-orders or money of any kind was taken from potential players.
Sorry to butt in, but that's a harsh criticism of something I worked on, so I thought I'd set it straight.

What is a scam?

If they committed fraud why hasn't anything been done about it? Fraud is a criminal offense, giving the victims every right to seek vindication. Why haven't you, it's been months now? I've yet to see the headlines, yes there will be headlines if this happens.

@ Lum,
Im curious, you use that name but dont sound like the Lum i remember before he sold himself to the industry.
So again, im curious, are you he ?And If so, dont you work for Mythic ?
If no, why use the name ?
