EA sold more pre-order's for WAR for the PC in its entire 26 year history. Check it out: www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/
1.5 million units sold, baby!!

The way they did the beta and early launch makes this insignificant. Companies are now using the lure of open beta to get people to pre-order so they can then hype their game using pre-order numbers. What would the number of pre-orders have been if it didnt' guarantee you a beta spot?
It would have been fine, all people who wanted to play got free beta keys. Head start is a good reason tho, although you usually buy a CE for the exclusive gifts.
Who cares? The point is that they sold this massive amount. And they will only continue to grow through word of mouth.
Very impressive considering WoW's North American market is only around 2 million ish. Maybe less.

Exactly. The means to how they achieved this success makes no difference. Regardless, congrats to EA and Mythic.

Not if that mouth is mine. I will tell the truth about this game. No significant amount of people are going to leave WoW to join WAR. They will load it up and see its the same game practically. Then return to WOW as WOTLK releases. I will be the one on these forums telling everyone of you I told you so when about the majority of your player base leaves after the first month to go back to WoW. WOTLK will take back the WoW players who are bored right now with BC and are like well ill give this a go for a month till WOTLK comes out and i wouldnt doubt if they are in this forum PRAISING WAR on how it plays and or looks. But when WOTLK comes out thats when you guys will find out who is your loyal WAR fans. I dont play WoW btw so i wont be going to WOTLK so dont respond to this saying no just u will.
useless site.. as it doesnt even load
Hilarious
Twist of words huh?

RETAILERS, not consumers. Get your facts straight

Not many PVE players will do that tbh, they will stick with WoW and keep farming the curent content, although quite many PvP players will stay, especially those who enjoy battlegrounds instead of arena.
Can't say I won't miss arena in WoW, it's actually fun(inb4 Arena is good for epeen only) but paying 15 bucks for it won't do it.
Hmm, I have read that they will start with 700k copies Myabe the reason about 1.5m copies is becasue preorders was doubled in the last month?
Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

why are you in this War forum...????????
Lich king is more of the same genric grind with copy paste art all hidden under a new title. i am never going back to wow.

Well only time will tell whos right, i personally think WAR came out a little to late to compete with anybody.
Its great to see that Mythic has done well in sales, where its going to count is in player retention. I suppose its unnecessary to mention a recent game as a metaphor.

Ah Goldtroll, always brightens up my day.
1,5 million copies sold to RETAILERS.
I think that deserves mentioning -_-
For comparison, I believe that Funcom sold 700k copies of Age of Conan to retailers initially.
(no flames for that if I'm wrong, my memory isn't what it used to be)
How else do you think game developers sell their products? They don't sell directly to the consumers, they use retailers. Hence why the only way to measure sales is through retail sales.
EA broke their own record with preorders purchased by CONSUMERS. That was the title of this thread, after all. I think THAT deserves mentioning, Wow fanboy.
FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 2008--Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) studio, today announced that the highly-anticipated MMORPG, Warhammer(R) Online: Age of Reckoning(TM) (WAR), will ship tomorrow to retail stores across North America, Europe, and Oceania in preparation for launch on September 18th. WAR set a company record for the most retail pre-orders placed by consumers for a PC title in EA's 26 year history. Overall, the company has sold 1.5 million units of WAR to retailers.
Thanks for proving you're still a fool fanboi screaming on the top of his lungs about things he's clueless about
Edit: Aaahahaha, just noticed he Opening topic was made by you, why am I *not* surprised a topic that twists the truth would come from *you*
its shipped to retailers - not sold to consumers
its good to see but I'd rather see consumer sales

Gotta love how these WoW fanboys are coming out of the woodworks making excuses. The fact is, WAR is going to have a bigger debut than AoC did and it didn't have the awesome graphics AoC had to lure them in either. That's quite the feat. It's all gravy from here since WAR will most certainly draw legions of people in when they learn how great it is compared to the competition.

Yes, but selling to a retailer does not mean someone is going to buy it. And remember, the developer gets about 20% of sales, the rest goes to the retailer and distributer. Mything will see $10 for every box sold to a customer.
To put things in perspective. AOC sold 1.2 million boxes to retailers, of which 800k were sold to customers. They made 8M on the sales of boxes.
I still think the game is very lackluster and clunky and will not keep a significant number of people once they reach lvl 40.
Oi, people these days. . .

There's an interesting Poll on www.curse.com (bottom right). 70% canceling wow to go to war? Don't tell me the crowd voting on it is irrelevant either, because no one plays wow without addons.

I agree but doesnt change the facts that your press release link clearly says shipped to retailers
- big difference than sold to consumer
some people to this day,
still think that AOC sold 1+ million copies - when Funcom only shipped that amount
AOC sold less than 1 million
