Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning: Most Retail Pre-Orders for EA... Ever

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

It was announced today on Business Wire that Mythic Entertainment's Warhammer Online has now sold more retail pre-orders than any other PC title in EA's 26 year history.

FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) studio, today announced that the highly-anticipated MMORPG, Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ (WAR), will ship tomorrow to retail stores across North America, Europe, and Oceania in preparation for launch on September 18th. WAR set a company record for the most retail pre-orders placed by consumers for a PC title in EA’s 26 year history. Overall, the company has sold 1.5 million units of WAR to retailers.

Based on the popular tabletop game from Games Workshop, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is an epic fantasy MMORPG featuring innovative Realm vs. Realm™ game play that pits the armies of Order and Destruction against one another on the battlefield to determine the fate of nations. Hundreds of thousands of players have already joined the battle in the open beta, and soon the time will be at hand for players the world over to pledge their allegiance to the armies of WAR.

“This is truly a historic day for both EA and Mythic as we prepare to send more copies of WAR to retailers than any other newly launched MMORPG in North America and Europe. Over the course of our beta, over a million gamers throughout the world sent a clear signal to us - they want WAR, and we are more than happy to oblige them,” said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. “In three days the real battle begins – we have declared September 18th the ‘Day of Reckoning,’ and WAR will soon be upon us!”

Check out the announcement here.

Regardless of whom it may have been sold to, 1.5 million copies is something many people would kill for.

    Good start

I never thought I will see the day that true contender to WOW will be made.

Few first months will be crucial. If Mythic survives that with good track record , WOW throne will finally be contended.

It's  a good game and I canceled both my wow accounts yesterday. I have been pleased with Mythic's attention to suggestions UNLIKE that 50 bucks I blew on AOC.  I am ready to Waaagh!

It won't dethrone WoW, but yes, it would be nice for more solid competition in the marketplace.

AoC is still alive, so is EQII, FFXI, etc, but we need a real big contender for Pay to Play MMOs, and hopefully Warhammer is it.

Will be sorta interesting to see what kind of damage Wotlk does to WAR numbers...

  • hardy83hardy83 Member Posts: 47

WotLK won't come out till November.

Blizzards counter to the release is patch 3.0 on the PTR (or live for that matter), and CE information and preorders.

That has nothing to do with the title, the most retail pre-orders is a personal milestone for EA not the gaming industry. a little reading comprehension would do some good here.

Surprised they have not stuck there wonderful DRM utility on this game.

I won't be playing it, but I hope it as good as all the War people have hoped.  Be nice to have a good competitor to Blizzard.  Competition makes better games.

Always good to see that coming through. If MMO market gets more quality games then all the better for the comsumers hence the players.

    Cheers!

Wait...I thought the lead developer that stepped in for the game ruined it.

You know.... The one that's now lead developer for WoW.

they may have sold 1.5 mil to stores but you still have to realize that they did sell them which means either way they are makin some nice cash off the boxes right now.  cant wait to see how things look when all the non preorders drop in to play too.

DRM is not needed since you have to have an authentic key for the game to actually work.  Without the key you can't create a login, without a login you can't play.  If so many people didn't pirate video games we wouldn't have to worry about intrusive software.

Thats not a big feat to be honest in my opinion. What game has EA released that would beg someone to pre-order it before WAR? Madden but come on you can get MADDEN on release date you dont need to pre-order that game.

In all honesty, I have never "needed" to preorder a game.  It all depends on if I want to drive to get a game or have it delivered.  The only thing I have ever felt the need to preorder was a PS2 and PS3 which was a good thing I did preorder.

Yeah but why make a intrusive software if it doesnt work. Every game that is so called un piratable has been pirated. After Half-Life 2 was pirated the DRM and SECUROM features should of been scrapped because that was a pretty solid way to fight piracy and they failed what makes u think these Malware programs are going to stop hackers because they do it for the challenge and its like Every year some PC developer tries to out smart them and before the day is even over BAMN your cracked copy. Why i like and support Bethasa (Oblivion) for never putting any anti-piracy things on there games No keys no nothing. Just what i paid for a game. Game sold very well last time i checked.

Tru tru consoles are a good thing to Pre-Order if you have the money to buy them. I only pre-ordered the dreamcast and it was doing good till PS2 came out =P then became a Epic Failure. But i did like that hackers found a way to play SNES, NES games in crap on it which was cool. Plus you could download any game without a mod-chip and play it on a Dreamcast which i think really killed it. No one had to buy games because the hackers hacked the boot sequence and u didnt need a mod-chip or anything. Just download a game burn it and it worked.

Oh trust me I know.  The only people that are punished are those that run legitimate programs but I am sure companies have to do something to keep the suits happy.  What it will eventually boil down to is you will have to do exactly like you do with MMOs.  Create a username and password and login each time you want to play.

EA has nothing to do with AoC.

AoC could have sold millions after millions copies and still WAR would be the most preordered game for EA.

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
