Battlefield 2 is scheduled to arrive in Quarter one of next year (and my dear and native DICE are pretty good at not delaying things too long), and it will surely be a game to look out for. With Bullet-penetration, Urban Maps, Modding-friendliness, a new reward system and Trauma Studios (the people behind the popular mod Desert Combat for Battlefield 1942) doing the proto-typing it will be a must at LAN-parties everywhere, and on your PC!
Of course, there's allways Half-Life 2, which is looking superb, but it has been delayed again... ...to november!

Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam are both great games, as long as the players are willing to co-operate. Sure, playing rambo in them ain't much fun, but if you manage to develop some decent team-play then it's simply wonderful! Not to mention all the great mods, like Desert Combat, Interstate '82, Galactic Conquest, Silent Heroes and the upcoming Invasion Gotland!
Call of Duty 2 is scheduled for release on 10/10/04 and Half-Life 2 on 11/01/04. You've got several others being released this fall like Star Wars Battlefront, Close Combat, MoH Pacific Assault, Tribes Vengence, and some more. Till then, Far Cry is supposed to be good, but I haven't played it yet.
If you want to try a free one and wait on Call of Duty2 or Half-Life2 or one of the other fps, try America's Armyv2.1.
I think the best FPS on the market is Counter-strike, and it will be until something awesome comes along. I must admit that Battlefield Vietnam is very fun. I think what it has captured is the art of fun vehicular play. Counter-strike is more about compeition and stratrgy.
If you are looking for really competitive gameply, go for Counter-Strike. If you want somethign to have a bit of fun with, go for Battlefeild Vietnam. I enjoy both alot, they are just different.
Counter-strike has been around for 5 years and the graphics aren't that great, but it is made up for in the gameplay. While BFV has better graphics than CS, it still isn't anything incredible.
If you are willing to wait a few months, Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 will both be sensational. I think they will be the favorites of every FPS player out there, and sort of move us into a new generation of First Person Shooters. The market is growing and the demand is high. With that in mind, expect greater things to come as it advances. I think of FPSs and MMOs as having an exponential increae in gameplay fun. The longer the market lives, the better the next game is in comparison to the game before it and so on.
To answer your question in a word: Counter-Strike

I hear Far Cry is a great game. Have not tried it yet though, as I am not much of an FPS guy...
