Interesting posts... ya know, thinking about Star Trek Online longer kinda makes me wonder if a Trek MMO was a good idea in the first place. I mean I love Trek for a long time, but something tells me those folks here are right who say that ST generally is difficult to transfer to a MMO.

Think about it: most TV shows and movies are about a crew on a starship, and hands down... the most time spent on a starship for most of the crew is boring. On the other hand, ST was always about social stuff; combat was only an afterthought and violence was to be avoided. For me that was always the essence of Star Trek as opposed to every other sci-fi series: to avoid war and combat. But how to translate that into a MMO, which  by convention is combat heavy?

Making it another EVE, thus mainly being focusses on space fight sure is a possibility, and tbh I dont think Cryptic has the genius to dare something big and innovative as Bioware with SWTOR, so Cryptic follows the known and proven path of a simple combat game. That would not be of any matter, if it wouldnt be a violation of everything Star Trek stands for. Or shall I say stood for, before those in charge turned Gene Roddenberry's vision upside down, killing its uniqueness with trash like "Enterprise" and "ST: Nemesis".

Anyway, I had hoped STO would be a setting similar to SWG, since I dont see a reason why every STO player would or should be member of Starfleet. Why not allow people to be anything, so you would have planets and starships and stations, and as addition also spacefight, just as SWG had. In that way you could implement the social settings and not make a Trek MMO into a mere space fighting game. No matter how good they make it, there is already EVE, other space combat MMos are in development, so I dont see another niche for such a specialized MMO. And thats the true bane of STO: its aimed to be another overly specialized MMO which focussses on ONE aspect only, and most of that kind of over-specialized MMOs failed. Most Trek fans likely expect something entirely different with a ST MMO, so yes, I too expect this to be a huge failure. And Cryptic has been proven to be a no-listener already, so the hope for a miraculous change is quite... limited.

star trek's battles were epic. i have no doubt there'll be plenty of scenarios where fighting is not the best way to achieve things. the more i've read about this game the more excited i've become. i don't want eve trek but niether do i want the sesame trek that many whiners were looking forward to.

A walk down memory lane of all those who thought it was actually going to be a good game.

Nope; if they haven't listened to forums (other than the STO ones), or any of the many reviews that list all the problems, then don't hold your breathe expecting people to listen. Proof of that can still be found daily on the STO official forums.

Don't rush out to buy those lottery tickets just yet, the OP got lucky. While they did reach a correct conclusion, they did so for the wrong reasons; the OP was merely commenting on the initial statement by Jack that we would be captains of our own ships. If you want that lucky ticket, track down those who reached that conclusion for the right reasons; there were several people who listed all the things (other than just being captains) that would be wrong with STO at launch. In fact, there was a link to one on the STO forums here once; they not only nailed all the problems, but they gave an accurate timeline of all the b.s. as well! That's who you need to track down for those lotto numbers!
