My brain must still be asleep. I'm simply not following your train of thought at all.

All I wanted to say is that SGW is essentially TR reskinned. Well, last time I played it anyway.

My take on the speculation of financial troubles at CME is this....

All "Startups" can and often do go through tough times until their product is released, regardless of what the product is. The fact that CME is a startup corporation doesn't bother me. Even late paychecks can be lived through as long as they keep coming. My best wishes and prayers to the employees of CME at this time I give you.

What bothers me is the amount of money reportedly spent of the initial money invested and the amount of debt that has been accumulated before the product, StarGateWorlds, has been released. If CME has blown through all that money already then the future of SGW is in serious doubt as to if it will survive. In the present day economy (and the forseeable economy of the next few years) it would take a blockbuster success like what Blizzard's WoW experienced for CME to recoup the capital invested and start turn a real profit. I am of the opinion that the success of WoW was a unique event, and that no Development Company should count on it happening again anytime soon. If CME has already spent the $45 million, even if they have only spent half of that, then they will be struggling for years to come. This is my primary concern for CME's SGW, it's investors, and especially it's employees.

All it takes is for mediocre success and in-game advertising for them to recoup their money spent. Games like Kaneva and PlanetSide make major money off in-game advertisements. You'd be surprised how much Ted Turner shelled out to be in Kaneva.

looks like a closure annoucement is imminent. 40 days no pay for employee's and a lot of devs have left.

    Such a shame

Once Stargate Worlds is released they will have a steady and very reliable income.  I wouldn't worry about any articles...  now if the game was in very early development, then you should worry.

Well, in Blizzards case it was their own fault, they hadn't released a game since Diablo and Starcraft, and they remade Diablo 2 from scratch 4 times and when they finally released D2 it was the last 2D game so things could have gone very bad.

But this thing with CME is worse, they will probably do as many other and release an unfinnished product to get the cash in soon, either that, sell themselved to EA or go broke. Let's hope they get some more money another way.

I haven't read through all the post's but this IS a rumor. Here's some links from dev responses:

If this has been mentioned already though, then disregard this post.

If CME is in deep financial trouble they have two options,

    1: Early release (spring 2009).

    2: Throw in the towel.

With option 1 they can still salvage the game, if MGM decide that they'd rather not lose face and help out with advertising and distributing. Do the publishing and advertising for a low price and an easy going plan on payment for it.

With option 2 it would break a small company just starting out (can anyone say Sigil?). Option 2 leaves the owners with nothing but filing for bankruptcy and selling everything off, including the rights to SGW. Unless another company was prepared to buy all thier work, the rights and take on a few developers (not SOE, please mother of God no!), SGW wouldn't see the light of day for sometime or at all!

If they are in trouble and need help I say there is only one thing to do in this situation, call in Koster! Yes, there is but one entity in the MMORPG world that has the ability to pull an MMO back from certain destruction and make it a winner. He did it with SWG, and considering the crap he was getting from SOE it was nothing short of a miricale he and his team made one of the all time greatest MMOs in under 2 years!

I implore CME to beg Raphael Koster to come in and get the job done, get rid of those damn levels and let him implement a skill based system. Grovel on your bellies like maggots if you must! Just the fact that Koster is involved at any level would make many ex-SWG players flock to this game. "Raphael please help, you're our only hope!".

    "Ral-tora kree CME."

When I read you suggesting Koster, I was gonna blast you for it (I think the man is a complete wanker, but I do respect his work on SWG), but your penultimate line put it all into perspective.

So yeah, get Koster involved and his cult will follow. SGW is destined to fail as it is - the majority of MMO players simply don't want levels any more. I stand firm by my 'TR: Reskinned' comment, and we know what happened there.

TR had a good solid combat system, nice graphics and fabulous sound. Just that everything else sucked donkey ****s, no way to build a community as communication was probably easier between Jewish communists in different towns under the third reich than between players standing next to eachother in TR! PvP was non-existant as it was a duel only system and you had to ask someone for a duel so back to the communication problem.

TR was orientated around solo play with group play as an after thought. I wanted to join a guild and group up but in the end the effort wasn't worth it. It was easier to just solo through. I hope SGW doesn't go the same road, having set base camps like the SGC will hopefully help with the community building.

I never wanted level myself but I still don't believe that. If the majority really wanted no levels we should have at least one game without levels that have any players, and we don't.

The sad thing is that the majority of the MMO players wan't  Wow and they already have it. The majority of this forum might not but that doesn't really change what most MMO players around want.

    Yes we do.

Eve Online has no character levels, just skill levels. And each skill only has levels 1-5. I believe Eve has around 200k accounts now.

Also, it has no experience points. You level skills by putting one into training, and it completes in a set amount of real world time, based on your attributes. There's no way to powerlevel or grind your way up that ladder. (There is, however, grinding for reputation and money.)

Eve is primarily a PvP-centric game as well.
