Universal Gaming Law

So I was playing Warhammer the other night when I realized I was absolutely confused about the chat system....not because it's complicated but because the colors for each "chat" was different, as in guild chat was actually a light blue and Yell was a bold yellow.

Coming from WoW I loved the simplicity of it, so I decided to create "The Universal Gaming Law", what all games should include, please feel free to add:

1)Normal chat color: White,  Guild chat: Green, Whisper: purple, Yell: red, general chat (and others): a light tan.

2)Color code for items: Crap gear: gray,  Good gear: white,  Superior gear: green,  Rare gear: blue,  Epic gear: purple, Legendary gear: Orange,  and SUPER SPECIAL AWESOME GEAR: red.

Well....that's all I can think of at the minute, it's early and Im off to work, so please, feel free to add/change my 2 very short "laws'.

Cheers!

    I've not player WAR, but I'm 90% sure there'll be an option to change the on-screen text colours. You're used to WoW, but other players are used to other schemes.

    Have a look in the UI preferences, I'd be very surprised if you can't change them there.

    Law: Dont FORCE players to play with keymaps that the DEVs are used to - let us redefine ANY key (ie no RESERVED keys) for any purpose. Different people play differently.

    Those are the colors WoW uses, why can't a mmo have its own colors for chat?

    must every god damn mmo cater to the current or Ex wow player?

    Nah, the color code for items should be:

    White = Ordinary

    Yellow = Well Made

    Green = Master Crafted

    Blue = Excellent

    Purple = Superior

    Gold = Ultimate

    Your proposal for the chat colors are good though.

    Haha, agreed. It's bad enough that the two games are so similar already..

    While I agree with you whole-heartedly, there is something to be said for reducing the barriers to entry for your product when you're attempting to siphon off some of the competition's customers.  If anything, a better move for Mythic would have been to make everything customizeable (perhaps it is already) but default to the WoW colors....

  • FreddyNoNoseFreddyNoNose Member Posts: 1,558

    I don't like it.  It feels too much a restriction on the devs of the future.  It may sound resonable now, but over time more and more things would be added.  In the end, wouldn't it just mean more of the same for any new games that come out?  Unless the community feels we don't already get enough of that.

  • Harpy_LadyHarpy_Lady Member Posts: 137

    I don't think there should be a universal default for all games. However, it would be nice if it were always customizable.  Colors don't bother me as much as everything going into one window.  I like being able to filter guild and tells into a seperate window.

    Customizable i will agree with, making every god damn game follow WoW so games are easy for Ex wow players to understand i don't agree with.

    I apologize for making my post sound like a "make every game a WoW" , Im merely saying that when new games come out, people won't be super confused with everything. Im not going to lie, I was a little confused at first when War had different chat colors.

    Meh you don't have to apologize, people like Z3R01 are all over these forums, they seem to think every WoW player is stupid even though alot of WoW players have played just about every other mmo out there. I myself am playing WoW, WAR, and EVE currently, just don't feel the need to stick with one.

    But like i said don't worry about it, its a good idea for things to be custimizable because WAR's choices for chat colors aren't all that great, anyways just ignore him and people like him, calling people names just shows his maturity and its pretty sad.

    Wow has so many players that making things like that a standard is not a bad idea. But I'd like new games having another color system for items (or another completely different way of rating them, or not rating at all, only the stats). And the color for the chat usually can be changed by the player.

    I can't help but think that this tread is giving mmo players a bad name.  Imagine someone new coming here and seeing this and thinking "wow, he was confused by simple colors?  do I really want to play with people like this?"

    Honestly, if you're getting confused by colors which you can change at will, there might be something wrong.  This is the lazy attitude that's driving this genre into the ground.  People refuse to put any effort or thought into anything they do in mmos anymore.

    Further more Z3RO or however you spell his name does have a point.

    No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

    Oh and I took my meds already I need them to deal with the retards on this forum.

    yup, because CHAT colors is so game changing, that it would ruin everyone's immersion and gameplay.

    Move along Eve Elitist player ..... oh you see what i did there? I used Eve's playerbase's stereotype on you, kinda like how you stereotype every WoW player.

    Brilliantly said sir! Unfortunately...the ex-WoW players are the 10 mill that future games devs will cater to...I fear for the future of the MMO.

    I don't know, seems to me that Wow used EQ chat colors.  Nothing wrong with that. No idea why mythic chose to make up new chat colors, I think DAoC was pretty similar to EQ and Wow.

    But I agree there should be  standard.

  • Eden2008Eden2008 Member UncommonPosts: 4

    Agreed, but make it one that most people that have played mmo's understand and WoW is a good exmaple of that.

  • WaterlilyWaterlily Member UncommonPosts: 3,105

    I disagree.

    Without the obvious flaw in this system, that some people are selectively colour blind.

    Also, colours do not uniformly represent the same emotions around the world. Let alone from one person to the next.

    In EQ you can adjust every chat and combat colour and almost everyone uses a different personalised scheme. The most striking thing about this is that everyone seems to choose their colours for a certain reason.

    I want to be able to adjust my chats, order them, select the colours I want, I want to create channels, manage them and combine or split them at will without the MMO telling me how it should be.

    You see the problem is that you came from WOW a game that can not think for itself and copied 99% of its game from EQ1.FFXI a paltry game if you consider subs to WOW,allows the user to change the font colours for every single aspect of the game including chat/combat/system.WOW is VERY  lucky that they have the amount of subs from players that really are just followers of each other to allow them the cash and time to advance there game.Blizzard however has shown to me to be extremely slow on all fronts as they are too busy counting there cash.

    Wow has allowed the simpleton players the ability to level easily and the ability to get mounts with no effort at all,these are two things simpleton players look for.

    As for gear colours,why on earth does gear need to be coloured?I have yet to see gear that is too hard for even a 5th grader to figure out.+STR is hard to figure out? +AGI is hard? +EVA is hard? +DEF is hard?.

    The only reason for using colour on gear is if the gear changes stats/effectiveness as you level up.In this case a simple level number on the gear is all you need,and a very simple guide set forth by the game stating how many levels above or below changes the gear,or the gear could just show it's new stats as you level.

    I know games use colours on mobs a lot because frankly there is a lot of real dumb players out there.They try to use some form of distinguishing mobs from one another[colour] that always ends up with players saying they can't figure it out lol.So a game uses a arrow system ,say 3 arrows is hard one arrow is weaker,players still get confused,so the developers usually aid these clueless by also giving them some colours.I havn't yet seen a system that makes it too hard to figure out,so what would you call these players?that can't figure out these very simplistic systems.IDK WOW Players? lol.

    I agree 100%,can't think of any excuse to not allow key mapping unless the game engine is very weak and ancient.

    Wizardry already beat me to this, but you are right with this one.  It cant be hard to let people re-bind any keys.  some people do play differently.  But Dev's rule the world i guess.

    One thing I learned long ago when I got an weird looking xmas gift.

    There are color blind ppl out there. They do not see colors all the same as us. To them, lots of colors seem like just shades so they need the ability to alter them.

    I say as a dev make the color whatever you like, we will cope on the user side, just make it alterable. Some people like me hate pink - I would be sickened if their "red" came thru pink in my chat like I was borrowing some 10 yr olds yahoo chat. Red can get on my nerves too mostly because I learned about its use in marketing, it screams ads to me now just seeing it - more of a cool color person. Someone I know hates green but I don't know how he stands going outside lol.Every game I change my chat colors when I can - this works just fine.

    We should just all work toward customization - not a standard because it's not going to work for lots of ppl anyway.

    No, you probaly misread, or misunderstand either way, what I really ment was that I got confused because I was so used to green being guild chat and purple being whisper etc.
