EvE's sandbox system works... copy it.
EVE is successful, becuase MMORPG like POTBS missed the point.
1-Economy
Asteriod mining vs No Fishing, No social, No nothing ?? This is #2 reason why people leave POTBS, why do u need a computer to play POTBS economy... Xbox controller is good enough for POTBS.
2-EvE Map is huge. POTBS is 15 mins away from PvP fight zone.
EvE's Map, It takes a player days to go from one corner of the map to another. PvP in EVE is almost by random chance. Unless you go to a PvP area, a player can play eve for 3 years and not once he/she will run into a PvP ship.
3-Chat room? i am not going bother trying to help anymore... i am done!!!!
The problem w/ POTBS is that stupid designers just refuse to listen to anyone... all those interviews in the last 6 mths are all about the same subject. Why not read your own beta forum and execute the plan.

I agree with OP, i really wanted to like PoTBS. Problem is they made it too much of the run of the mill cookie-cut level based MMO which IMHO ruined it for me.
Its too bad, had they made it more skill based i really think this game would have been allot more fun and PvP wouldnt have been as unbalanced as it stands now.
my .02 cents
Hell people copy a sad ass game like WoW, why not copy a Gem like Eve Replace spce with an ocean and Spaceship with boats and you have a winner.
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing
regular SOE business plan
ive seen this before.. oh yeah SWG!!!
B.O.B. and the Dev's may not like you fooling around with mother nature.
MAGA
The skill based system with some modifications fits itself to ANY genre game. The sandbox play style opens the game for any possibility for the players and an economy that means something makes games a ton more fun.
I know in LOTRO I hated the crafting system because the stuff you got at level 10 was useless higher up. For example using LOTRO, bronze is made with tin and copper and is used for low level armor. However higher level armor does not use the same materials so having them means nothing.
In EVE Veldispar is the base ore for mining and is used in ALL levels of construction. So even at higher levels of crafting you still need the base materials to make things. This means tyou get an economy built up around not just the finished product but the base materials as well since all types are needed all the time.
I tried POTBS and was not impressed.

EVE's "wait for skill" model is aweful. I enjoy the odd stint of eve but my 'stints' involve signing up - getting a list of skills I want and then not playing again.

How about because Eve can get INSANELY boring? let me travel around hours to get to where I need to be, sometimes even longer than that. Lets play a game where a dev is in the pocketbook of players! Sign me up! There's also the fact that, deserved or not, EvE players are known as the snobs of the MMO world. Some of that is deserving, some isn't.
The same with the "wait for skills" concept. In theory, its nice. It doesn't reward power-grinding and you can't really "powerlevel." Yet at the same time there isn't a terrible amount of effort put in to advancing your guy. Just click a skill, wait a few days. Sometimes you might want something a little sooner, but really don't have an option for that.
I played EvE for two months and got bored out of my mind. Now EvE does things that work, no doubt about that. They are also a lot more polished than a game like POTBS. What I attribute that to is the guts of CCP to stick to their vision despite the constant whining and complaining of some players. You knew where EvE was going, you knew it was "hardcore", etc. Eventually that built a very loyal customer base. It ain't a game for carebears. Now when people play that game, they know what they are getting into. FLS wasn't sure what they wanted to do with POTBS. They are trying to make changes midway through the game that are fundamentally related to what their vision (if they even have one!) is.
Hmm, I think the upcoming "World of darkness online" will use a lot of eve things but POTBS should go it's own way. And Eve isnt the only game with a huge map.
Doesn't mean that Pirates can't use a lot of work but I'm just not so sure copying someone else is the best way to make a great game. But economy and small map are issues that needs to be fixed if this game wants to be big.
Yes, I too heard about EvE players being the snobs of the MMO world. I also heard it was completely useless to play the game on a single account.
What surprises me with EvE is the long-term success of the game. I would have thought that after the initial carving of the political map, every loser would have headed out the door in search of something else to play where they would stand a chance.
If you're trying to convince me to start playing a game five years after launch, you'll have to work overtime to convince me that I can achieve anything in it without running into the usual suspects who have had a few years' head start. But EvE is a classic example of a game which doesn't even bother to try to convince me -- and I'm just supposed to start playing only to get a kick in the teeth on a regular basis?
Shadowbane was like that. Look how it did. Darkfall is headed in the same direction -- just reading their forums is enough to discourage you about the game. These are games which offer everything to large guilds, and nothing to casual or unaffiliated players like myself. No wonder I'm tempted to pass.
In answer to your comments, as an EVE player I can tell you that the SNOBS of the MMO world play WoW. EVE players believe they have the best system but they do not even come close to the arrogance of WoW players.
As for single account, I play on a single account and know a ton of others that do as well and have zero issues. I am advancing nicely with my restarted character, the only one I am running and have doen it without a corp to back me.
The whole not playing because others have played longer is bunk. In EVE a player that is even two weeks old can be a decent pilot and with a group of friends can challenge the higher players. As for getting kicked in the teeth, again I say I have started from scratch, been advancing well and had no issues.
Finally as for the comment insanely boring I feel the same way about WoW and most fantsay based games. It is a personal choice.

Honestly, i don't want people to copy Eve. When i play another game, i don't want to play a clone of the one i'm playing right now, i want something different.
And if you want to get some people to join, you better think of something on your own. You won't get eve players suddenly abandoning their game for something similar, leaving everything they built behind.
So you will be stuck with the potential userbase that likes eve, but does not play it..i guess you'll agree, those are not enough to run an mmo with..
What i'd like to see, though, would be devs loosely adapting some mechanics. Especially the hands off aproach, conquerable territory, pvp with risk, economy...yes, maybe you'd end up with something similar to eve one day, but don't just copy it. Without some genius plan on something that eve will never have, your development time would be better invested into an application and job at ccp...
On this I agree, using some of the concepts would be great but to just recreate EVE and then put it at sea would be a real mess.

I Tryed POTBS, I loved the sailing, the battles were not too bad .But the land based quests were lacking, Small maze like land map ,repeated too much,And what self respecting pirate doesn't have treasure maps and quests? And how can you have instanced doors 5 years after SWG still lets you walk right in to their buildings!
