I'm not kidding. The next time I see someone in these forums say "you have obviously never played an mmo at launch before", I am going to kill a kitten. Not a nice death either. I will smash it against a tree. People, stop being idiots. The second you use this way overused phrase, and others like it (i.e. "go back to wow noob") , you reveal yourself as an idiot. This is not 1998. The whole, launches are supposed to suck excuse does NOT hold water anymore. Games that released early in the genre were treading on new ground. Yes, ao had bugs, EQ had bugs, even wow was a pretty crappy launch (yes fanbois, it was). but goddammit, this isn't new technology now! Many of these absolute disaster launches aren't even from companies releasing their first mmo. Funcom has like 8 years experience in the business. The companies releasing terrible games now are using the classic "money grab" scam, and you , the gamer , are allowing them to! They have the ability to release games in a finished state. They do, I promise. Why bother though? When you can release a alpha state game, and the fanbois will come, and spew "give them time, it's a new game". Seriously people, think of meowie!
I agree with much of your post, but I draw the line at hurting kittens.
All I can say is NONSENSE to those trying to put Wow up as a bad launch. They had a server glitch on one day and they gave everyone a free day because of it. Beyond that the game worked fine. Now EQ was the game that had a horrible launch, half the computers around at the time could not even run the client.
Only good launch I have seen so far was Lotro. Every other game has had issues. War seems to have less problems, nice to see Mythic did their homework.
I see that term used so much on these forums, I think if you do a search for the word "troll" compared to all other words, you would find it to be themost used term on here.
God forbid, if you hate a game, like Warhammer, and you post about your negative feelings, youre a troll. If you support a crappy game, youre a troll. If you complain about a bad experience, your a troll. If you vent about Funcom's treatment, youre a troll.
Youre a troll if you are unhappy with the current state of the MMO industry.
Youre a troll if you browse these forums and counter those posts.
In fact, I could venture to say, that essentially, everyone is a troll. The whole term for "troll" is blown way out of proportion. Hey guys, guess what? If we didnt have trolls,
honestly then... how many thousands of man-hours given by 10s, if not 100s of thousands of free/volunteer beta testers, Thats the thing that needs to change a game should not use free/volunteer beta testers, the whole beta test thing should be gone and not used anymore as it never made any game better, but unfortunaly not even gaming company's feel that way as for some they think beta testers are valueble, only thing I can think of is the free publicity these games get. Just look at these forums and we even see people making beta reviews which in itself it stupid to do so as it doesn't cover the actual game but a game in a fase that isn't finished, and sure we had lots of MMO where we heard people say "what till the game is released and it will be better" many failed at becoming better. I personaly feel since the overall communuity in this genre has grown so much more then we had 10 years ago that developers need to take a new type of action, get ride of beta testers, make sure the company hires professional testers to do the job, spill as little info about a game in development cause ever drip of info these company give will creat expectations that are often far from realistic expectations. combined with how many years of previous mmo experience, Well the thing is they don't need MMO experiance they need a good knowhow of what tech is cappeble of producing. will result in a good mmo at launch? a company that has nearly a decade under their belt and at least one mmo (hence the nearly a decade under their belt)... how much slack are we, the gamers, expected to give them? For me personaly when I feel a game is failing ME I stop playing it, this means I aint paying sub anymore, also I will not go onto forums and creat free viral advertising as that is what most complainers about specivic games are doing, best thing to deal with it with your wallet and not your voice, like I said a voice regardless if it's negative or postive alway's will creat attention towards certain games. To bad I see many people continue to play a game they dislike, meaning subs will go on and the company will do fine. well, as i have to hunt and search for more and more information, because of the lack of official forums, my threshold for this game and company steadily lower. The MMORPG that will make me say "Now thats a awesome game"as far I can tell isn't even being developed and I do understand that my wishes exceed current tech, so to me my best hope is to hopefully see that MMORPG I truly will enjoy in about 3/5 before it even can start it's development as thats is kinda what my experiance has shown me.
jacobs will soon be at smed's level. You mean how people talk about them on forums like this as they both are at a lvl in this industry many who want to get into this industry will only have their dream for it instead of actualy being at such a position as they are.
Well you>OP obviously are new to games in general like many on this forum you seem to expect more then what can be delivered, I call that unrealistic expectations, and it's what killing this genre slowly, people for some reason think this genre should already be solid, yet this genre is still very young, if it wasn't as young as it is we would have seen allot more commercial succes MMORPG's, once some of you learn this you will act more mature instead of the childish way the OP started this topic. I mean if one is to be called a idiot it is someone who acts the way or expresses himself like OP does with that whole kitty thing, it makes no sense and only shows the type of individuals we have among people that play games, which show they shold not even touch games.
The MMO genre is well over a decade old, in computer terms, that is ancient. It is pure laziness and greed to release unfinished, untested products on your customers.
If a software company released database software (which is exactly what an MMO is, a databse) which was as buggy and prone to issues as most MMOs tend to be, then customers would sue them, programmers would be fired and those companies would be put out of business.
What can kill this genre is all the apologists and brown nosers, that refuse to comprehend that the gaming industry is being run be greedy cash grabbers who could care less if you have a pleasant gaming experience as long as you keep throwing money at their feet and kissing their asses.
Most of us were young and immature back when MMOs started up, and being immature we could handle the crap that manifested in early MMO games, but we are mature now (most of us, at least), we know what a good game is, we know when the MMO companies make poor decisions and release an unfinished product. A mature person would realize that, because a mature person has experience and knowledge about what s/he wants.
And as far as the kitty comment...
Have a sense of humor, a mature person would understand that it was a joke.
How about the term "troll"? Actually I don't think people would be screaming "troll" for any of the reason you give.
What they scream Troll for is the method that some players use to express themselves.
Saying that you are unhappy with the industry because you see a trend toward a certain type of game that uses a more linear gameplay is one thing.
Saying that games now "suck so bad and that anyone who can't see that sandbox is the way to go is a dumba** sh*t who needs to go back to kindergarten" (or some such example) will earn the troll monkiker.
To that end, saying that you don't like a game because the gameplay doesn't reach to certain heights like "example a" and that the quests and art design are a bit to similar to "example b" because of these
"C examples" will start a discussion. Saying that "omg I hate this garbage, it's been done before and game companies are just greedy sob's who take the easy way out and they should just get out of the business and let others do better as even a trained monkey can make a better game" will get the same Troll name.
It's how you express yourself. A well thought out, well written post will start a discussion. But some of the stuff that graces these (and presumably other) forums sometimes descends to adolescent frustration at best and not printable at worse.
