I want to come back....should I?

So after getting tired of WoW and being disapointed with WAR, I've decided it might be a good time to return to my first MMO ever: FFXI. Is this a good time to come back to this game? The reason I quit the first time is because after I got my first jopb to 75(DRK), I couldn't bear the thought of hours and hours of waiting again in order to level up some sub-jobs. I quit right around the time WofG came out, and never did much of that either. So, has the game changed? Is it worth going in and trying this thing one more time? One worry I have is that because most of my friends don't oplay this anymore, that I'll end up stuckj, without a LS to help me complete all the content I never managed to do(I only ever got to Rank 6, never did any other mission).

Oh, and what about the future of the game? Does SE still plan on supporiting it? Or is the game running on it's last legs?

Thanks for any replies.

Everything is still good. WotG hasn't even been out a year yet. Level Sync makes it so you can party with anyone lower than you so long as they are level 10 or higher. So, waiting for parties isn't so much of a hassle anymore. Seeing as how you already have a 75 job, you shouldn't have much of any trouble getting into any kind of LS that is social and does quests/missions.

This game shows no sign of slowing down as far as I can tell. SE said they'll support the game as long as people keep playing it. Well, they're still playing it. Come on in, the water is fine.

I was just thinking about the same thing recently, the level sync would be pretty cool, maybe you can caught a pick up group with more seasoned players to assist you level up your sub job, as for rank 6 you can most likely finish those and get to 9 if not 10 by yourself, the storyline is actually very well done and i suggest you give that a try, if you havent gotten sea yet, try that out again story is great and its sorta worth it for some of the items you can get. havent tried much of the WotG expansion just messed around with the dancer class abit, new exp and level sync would make it alot easier/bearable to solo but still a party would be ideal for leveling.  The first generations of people i new playing on the Carbuncle server was really cool, but about 80-90% of the are long gone now, the feeling of social bond seems to be lacking abit now adays, try your hunt are other forums to see what server would be best for you now that you can actually server hop.

The game is still good... The economy is perhaps a little slower than it once was... though I have been playing off and on now since its American release on PC (Nov. 2003) so I can't say that my recollection on the ideal economy applies anymore. I am also one of those players who gets caught up in subquests, secondary content, farming grind, gil gathering, and other peripheral aspects of the game at the expense of becoming an uber- citizen (a high level veteran). To give you an idea on this, I have been playing the game off and on now for almost 5 years, and have still never gotten a job over 55. Of course, I have relinquished accounts to interested friends, and started new accounts occasionally, but this should still give you an idea of what kind of a player I am (more sociable, yet less serious). I tell you this because perhaps you should hold my opinion as a grain of salt on some things, though it is my opinion that the FFXI world is still hearty and burgeoning (more or less).

My server is Seraph (and Ifrit before that), and after twenty long months of setting the game aside (the longest time I have been away from the game) most (if not all) of my many esteemed linkshell buddies were still on the game. Of course, you can imagine the ecstatic shouts, and black and blue marks I got from leaving the game alone for that long (and neglecting my ingame friends) but the bruises go away and the happy memories return.

In other words, come back to the game... It may not be as populous as the WoW world, though there is still a wide range of pleasant comrads with which much enjoyment can be had. Buy the ticket... Take the ride.

Actually I still have both of my characters still, which is great. I got done installing/updating the game, but I'm not eve sure where to go from here really. Level sub-jobs? Pick new main? Missions? Merit? This game isn't nearly as easy to figure out as what I got used to(WoW), so yeah, what should I be doing that will hopefully get me hooked again?

Well if you were hoping to do more of the mission content i would say try and find an ls and get them involved. If you're rank 6 then you can start Zilart missions first couple are just cutscenes. The one that's a pain is probably ZM5 the one where you have to run around all over the place to kill headstones, once you get past that you can get sky access in one night with just 3 people easy.

I'd say while you're not doing missions try out some of the new stuff like campaign battles, and ops. They can be a good way to pass the time while still accomplishing something. Other then that you might try to lvl your subs you seemed to not like that idea but it's going to help you in the long run with any content you decide to do. Drk/war isn't always the best choice these days, many prefer drk/thf, drk/nin or some other combinations. Idk im not a drk lol. With the new lvl sync program finding and keeping a pt isn't as difficult anymore so the long waiting shouldn't be happening.

Only other problem I have wuth the game is actually hating the fact that I LOVE playing a DRK. It's my favorite job in the game, and it sucks that with my time in the game I've always been shoved around as a second rate DD behind pretty much anything else aside from DRG. I haven't kept up with updates, but is DRK really worth pursuing? Should I take the time to level subs and merit to get my DRK stronger or will I just have an easier timke by just rolling a WAR or SAM?

I decided to give it a go then. I'm currently in Ferir, and I guess what I'll do is level up my NIN, to either 37 to sub with DRK or to 75 if end up liking the job enough to make it my main. I dunno what it is about this game, but playing it again almost feels like coming back from home after a long time. I just don't have that with other MMOs. Anyways, what server are you guys on? Anyone in a LS that wouldn't mind helping meget some missions done? I wouldn't mind transferring.
