Character Collision?

Are there any mmo's where you can't walk through other characters and NPC's?  I think that would open a whole new realm of possible tactics, etc.

Warhammer (in PvP zones, anyway, not PvE) and I think Guildwars has this feature.

It really is a small thing that makes a big difference. I imagine they leave it out so much because the gm's don't want to have to keep their fingers on the "unstick" key for every player that gets trapped between a group of NPC's, but it's still an interesting feature.

Dont know if it's still the same...but UO, you have to have enough strength and stamina to push through people.  If you arent stronger, or have enough stamina to push through them you are bounced back.  Kinda sucks when a NPC decides to go stupid and not move and there you are between a table and a fussy NPC.  But I agree it could open up tactics, could also increase the amount of ganking...and believe me it did.  Remember we live in the era of carebearing, we like to treat players well so they dont leave, this isnt the age of only EQ and UO bein the major players we live where people expect to be cared for and guided through their virtual life :).

City of heroes has a good collision system.  A tank or two can defend at a doorway and keep a whole swarm of mobs from getting past.  All I need now is a mmorpg that doesn't let us shoot through other people.

Age of Conan got full collision detection going. The drawback, you can only fit in 4 people around a boss sometimes , unlike WoW where a 25-man raid can position themselves all nicely at the back. Amusing part is how you can walk in front of a guy on his horse , stopping him ;).

Also, yes Warhammer have it too when you enter the RvR/PvP zones. I think they did a nice combination of both parts where in RvR you'd want the collision [i.e. a group of tanks blocking entry into the keep] vs. PvE where you don't want to struggled getting a hit in on that boss that needs 20 players to down him.

    Collision detection =! Character collision

Darkfall is the game that you'll get most out of character collision (however, the game also offers a complex collision detection system which is not related to the topic). Actually, it's one of the main features of the game combat, and devs have given some quotes about how it will be an important tactic that will let small organized groups to be victorious versus zergs. There will also be a pushing character skill.

Among all other games listed so far, Darkfall is also the only game that have no auto-targeting, furthermore friendly fire is on. These two features will add another level to the combat tactics, enabling true battle formations. The inexperienced zergs will accidentally heal their enemies, and slash their allies; while a small group of experienced players will use terrain bottlenecks (similar to the "Battle of Thermapylae") to divide and deal with bigger groups.

Darkfall also doesn't exist. Forgot to add that huh?

No point in saying what good features a game has until it is out. Same with any other game not playable yet.

Somebody lock this thread, it's turning into a Darkfall is vs. isn't thread.

Talk about what every thread ends up on this site these days.  We have an overabundance of Darkfall fanboys who think this game will be the answer to every problem we've ever had with MMO's.  HOWEVER how do they know? the game has not been released.  Hell if there is one thing i've learned about game is if you buy into the hype you're probably in for a let down.

Also, I still stick by UO, then again it was the one MMO that kept me occupied for years upon years.

I still remember the worst collion game happened to me was EQ2. I quit it because of bad collision. My character and bear stood in exactly same spot to combat. And, many people fell to death from tower to take flight.  Well, a game just released could have many bugs but it depends on your tolerance.

In Guild Wars relying on collision detection is common part of using tactics; bodyblocking is the most common form and is as the name inquires when you block someone with your (or your character's) own body. Rubberbanding is a cause of it and it makes your character "lag" back, this is also known and when - in PvP - running relics you have to type /stuck before since you'll otherwise find yourself not being where you believe yourself too be. Collision detection is truly a good feature that I would love to see in more MMORPG:s, especially the ones including PvP since it adds much to it.
