its a tech test, its not a beta, they will basically download a programme that will test the PC specs and confirm if DF will work

Wide scope hardware testing is part of any application's "beta" testing.
Or did you think that they do straight from development into production?

Agreed. You can call it whatever you wanna call it but external people are finally being brought in to the testing process and this is exciting. I can understand why Vaportrolls are getting a little nervous now.

As others have stated this does in fact mean the beginning of beta, "Beta Test" is an initial system test or check with a selected group . I would have to say that qualifys. I have been checking my email too guys, lets hope we get into the game real soon after this test.

Play-testing =! Beta Testing.
The first phase of Beta has begun, the other phases will follow gradually. Play-testing is a further stage that will soon follow the technical phase. Open Beta is obviously the last stage, and will most likely be free for all.
"Once we've concluded this phase, we will gradually allow more people in based on various other criteria associated with the testing needs. We may not announce the start of every phase. All the testing up to the open beta phase is protected by NDA."

as a software developer that has been working in the commercial world for over 10 years, it's clear the stage they are at would be described as 'beta'. alpha means rudimentary functionality, missing features, and known bugs. these guys have said the game has been feature complete and in active internal testing for several months. it's clearly beta.

The first test of newly developed hardware or software in a laboratory setting. When the first round of bugs has been fixed, the product goes into beta test with actual users. For custom software, the customer may be invited into the vendor's facilities for an alpha test to ensure the client's vision has been interpreted properly by the developer. Yeah I wouldn't call that beta testing. When someone actally gets the play the real game then come here and crow.
don't be ridiculous. of course they will be playing it. they just won't be focusing on playtest feedback, just performance metrics.
