I don't know about that. If you mean being the 'king' of sci-fi MMO's I really feel that will be either STO or the new Bioware Star Wars MMO. I think Stargate will be fun, but I don't think it has enough of a following to be a huge hit. The high def graphics will cause the game to lag, and with a twitch based combat system a little lag will really screw the game up. I have hopes, but I played GUNZ online for a while, and I really see this going where in order to compete you'll have to master bunny hopping around and acting like a spaz rather than using cover.

It doesn't need a huge following now. It needs an awesome game. People won't care if its star wars, star trek. how many WAR players ever played warhammer table top. in fact id bet less than 10% of WoW Players ever played warcraft strat games.
star trek has more fans, ten times over. as does star wars. but pretty much everyone that plays mmorpg's is waiting for a groundbreaking, great game. if either of those 3 are it, then they will be a huge hit. if they are not, hey they will make some cash like WAR and LOTRO, keep a steady fanbase of their diehard IP fans, and the rest will move on to Fallen Earth(or whatever game finally comes through for us)
I believe stargate worlds will attract many ppl looking for a solid and refreshing "SCI FI" MMO, including myself. I'm getting worn out on fantasy MMO's, and SWG isn't really worth getting back into.
Personally, most popular MMO's out today became popular due to word of mouth as opposed to it's history. There may not be a super huge cult following of SG like there is with Star wars, star trek, etc, but if your a fan of MMO's and if this game is a fun experience, then I'm sure the population will sky rocket. Thats what I'm hoping for.

I am a huge fan of the series, both SG1 and Atlantis. When I first found out that this game was going to be made I was incredibly excited. For those who think that this is going to be a game only for fans, I believe that that line of thought is wrong (in my opinion). I am sure that only a small fraction of WoW subscribers had been fans before the MMO came out. I think that it will be a hit with a lot of gamers looking for something fresh with the new setting and sci-fi genre being a welcome change. I do not expect it to be the "king" of all MMO's but if they do what they say they are going to do and they do it well, I think SGW could be a big success. From what I have seen so far, they are on the right track and I hope that they stick with it. As this game has just entered closed beta, there are a lot of things to come and until we get a bigger picture there is no way to know for sure how SGW is going to turn out, but that doesn't mean that we can't hope for the best.
I kid you not, from what i have seen and read, this game will leave all other Sci-fi MMORPGS for dead. It will be the last nail in the SOE SWG coffin. It will be what Tabula Rasa should have been and it will set the bar so high that Bioware will have to really work their magic to compete with a possible KOTOR Online. This game will appeal across a broad spectrum of players, not the least including: Stargate Fans MMORPG Fans Sci Fi Fans FPS Fans Role Playing Fans
It would not suprise me that the subscriptions will head into the millions and it will take the world by storm, followed by a new show (Stargate Universe) and new movies (Stargate Atlantis).
Prepare to be BLOWN AWAY!

I doub that stargate world is a totally different lore then series,
With the awkward movements of console port its bound to fail.
And as a sg-1 dressed like a halo soldier is stupid, and asgard with robot lol.
Nah this game will fail bigtime.
They already screwed up with atalantis last sg-1 movie was below avarage.
The new SGU for young public with photo models who cant act and the soap approach they go bankrupt never hear of stargate ever again after they fail completely.

Oh and in case you SGW fan bois out there didn't get it the first time around I think this game is going to stink like roadkill on a hot hot summer day...complete with flys and ravens!

Sorry to say, WoW only made a dent in F2P player base. There are plenty of other games that does fine even if WoW is indeed more popular. WoW is about an average game in quality, I admit howver, it is a very popular and a game with made with millions and millions of dollars.
Howver, sorry, WoW is not the end all game, there can be no end all game. Even now there are games with better aspects, and there will eventually have F2P games that out do these too. People who stops changing should just die with the times.
I don't know how good stargate worlds will be, howvever, if it is indeed very incredible in the Sci-Fi genre. Calling it the WoW of Sci-Fi would actually do it injustice. I guess that depend on the person anyways. Some like WoW, some doesn't, and there are the fanboi, deal with it. Hope Stargate world might do well because I liked the TV shows, but MMORPG is alwayd different.

Oh, god.. shut up. You sound like you have a stick up your ass.
This game would have to steal the title from EVE (Not WoW title ofcourse, that doesn't exists). The popularity of Stargate is not significant enough to become the WoW of Sci-Fi's, only more popular Sci-Fi assets known to gamers will be more likely such as Star Wars and Starcraft (sorry, I don't even see Star Trek being able to reach this stage anymore).
I don't think that a fanbase of any IP is really enough to drive huge subscription numbers. Look at SWG (the original release) and LOTRO. Both dwarf SG's fanbase, and yet managed only around 300-400k players at the highest. So, I forget any talk of a million subscribers.
Probably more important that IP is flawless execution. SWG and the Matrix Online proved that in the negative direction, LOTRO in the positive. But yet, even LOTRO can't break out.
I think existing IP is actually a poor source base for an MMOG. I can't even think how a Star Trek MMOG is supposed to work, and the fact that no one else has yet seems to reinforce the point. The problem is that such IP usually focuses down on a small, unique group of individuals. Fans all want to be them, like SG-1, so you get a game filled with clones of "the best", so none are. Plus, these games tend to throw away what makes the IP interesting--the characters. It's not so much the plot that makes the success IMHO.
IP canon tends to take a big beating when it gets translated into the MMOG. Can you imagine what it'll be like to have hundreds of Asgard (yes, they are planned to be a playable race) running around? I can, and it won't feel like SG to me.
Sadly I'm expecting this game to hype and burn like so many recent games...
I LOVE The Stargate world IP and I think it is a perfect platform for an exciting and interesting MMO. My fear and I'm virtually certain it will come to pass is that the game will be released lacking polish, with missing features, and with massive bugs. On the name of the IP the game will sell like mad, then it will die faster then fire under water.

Just that so many turned into failures and utter dissapointment and didn't live up to the hype they promised it to be.
I am sorry to say this (as I LOVE the Star gate series) but this game isn't going to go anywhere period. There will be NO PvP as already stated by the SGW developers.
For Christ sake they have 2 NONcombat classes. An archeologist and a Scientist. You cannot have PvP with noncombat classes so no matter how the fans try to spin it there will never be PvP, meaningful or other wise.
Its a shame really they have a title that ozzes RvR game play story arc and they choose to be a puzzle game lol.
I predict it will launch with 100-150k subs and be down to 10k within 6months. then it will be down hill from there as there will be no money to further develope it.
Sorry Star Gate fans but after playing games for 15 years now and also playing AND alpha/beta testing over 15 MMOs I really do not see this game competing especially with Star Wars TOR and Star Trek comming out roughly the same time as SGW.
I, for one, am glad to see an MMO not falling into the trap pf trying to be all things to all people, such as Conan, has done, and pleasing hardly anyone in the process. There are already plenty of PVP oriented games out, and only tons more to follow. I'm all for a non-pvp based sci-fi game. Hopefully it doesnt emulate WOW by making gameplay , leveling and equipment too simplistic and aimed at the casual gamer, as so many have done. The lowest common denominator usually wins out anywhere pop culture comes into play. We need more niche games to satisfy more types of gamers, who are willing to pay to play for whats worthwhile to them. I have dollars in my pocket earmarked for the next good sci fi MMO to come along, hopefully, maybe, this will be it.

sorry but there is going to be pvp in SGW, the devs stated in a podcast not sure which one but the said there would be limited pvp at launch aka pvp servers and duels. The also said they will be releasing more pvp in there first episode about the jaffa stateing there will be stuff like battlegrounds. So there is going to be PVP in SGW just not straight after launch.

No it wont, as i am a MMO fan, i am hating the fact that this is "Stargate worlds" And will not even give it a chance on the fact that it is related to stargate alone. Just like i will not play a Start trek MMO, and there are alot of people like me. Thats why stargate worlds and STO will always be complete NICHE.
Did you know there is a buffy the vampire slayer MMO being made?, I am sure they will call it a killer of other mmos, but it is still way to niche, I am sure Stargate worlds will do decent, but it will not be nailing any coffins, seeing as 99% of the current SWG playerbase are all starwars fans which couldnt give a damn about SGW, and if leave for anything, it will be for the new SW MMO in production.

Burdock you must be on crack, but I hope SGW will be as sucessfull as wow, the game mechanics will be completely different.
1) I hope they dont hype the game just for the sake.
2) No need for revolutionary things or combat. It is simple and fun keep it
3) Please please dont release the game with unfinished end game content, tall claims of DX10 graphics,
classes & city being cut 3 months before launch.Release only if its ready.
4) Bring the stargate lore in the game
5) good crafting system.would love one of those asgards machine here they replicate items
6) I know its a bit too much but could I have Ronens Gun from atlantis .
7) Stop comparing the game to steak, burger ,vegetable etc Offer what it is
8) Be smart to listen to naysayers and the community Listen to all and act on your own.
9) Atlantis expansion .great get wraith class in I wanna feed on SG1.
I am desperately hoping that this game lives up to the expecations .It has a rich story and lore so PVE storyline should be great .
