What would an MMO without orcs, dwarfs and elves be like?

TakodanTakodan Member UncommonPosts: 161

Todays MMOs are trully like a broken record. They continuously circle around the same content, the same archetypes and the same basic stories. When will we have enough? I am of course talking about fantasy games and my question is this...

Would it be so impossible to have a fantasy game without these stereotypes - the hunters, the orcs, the long-eared elves, the small fat dwarves, the evil-minded sorcerers, the rogues, the white wizards...? The list can go on and on, and it really does too. Today i saw an advertisement on the first page of MMORPG about a new game called Atlantica and lo-and-behold if there wasn't an elf and a dwarf warrior on display... BAH!!

Is this what "fantasy" is all about, i would think it could be so much more or maybe i am wrong?

Age of Conan is fantasy and that has no dwarves or elves, of course it's not high fantasy but then again of course it's not, because elves, orcs and dwarves define high fantasy.

Well, there you see my ignorance... i didn't realize that fantasy was split up into different categories like that. Never heard of the term "high-fantasy" before so thanks! =)

There is Spellborn which I'm waiting for a long time. Release is date 27 November. They provide innovative gameplay and much fun. There are humans and daevi in their special lore. If you are interested in you can visit www.tcos.com for more info.

Is this sarcasm? i cant really tell... Anyways... I think you forgot about AoC... it is indeed fantasy, theres no such thing as High Fantasy lol...

there are plenty of other mythical creatures in AoC which brings me to my point....

Fantasy is just anything with mythical creatures, Elves and Dwarves help make Fantasy come alive.

    Well it will be heaven!

Im so tired of elves and dwarfs like game, where are the SF game? and what i mean by SF is not only a futuristic game (i say this because some can claim that SF have to be a space game or with plasma gun etc). Science fiction game can have sword, horse or anything eles.

Anyway maibe in a couple of years when people will be tired of the orcs and gnomes.... o well maibe i will become before that times.

For the sake of argument; Hyboria, or Age f Conan isnt so much Fantasy as it is medieval horror. An H.P Lovecraft setting in the Hyborian Age.

But there is fantasy worlds without elves, dwarves etc, and they work very well. The one I like to mention is Asherson's Call universe - Truly unique.  http://asheron.info/~asheron/index.php?title=ACC_Wiki_Home

Your reading into genres to much ... there isnt really all that much difference between sci-fi and fantasy. Only real difference is what kind of Armor everyone wears, everything else can be intertwined.

Maybe you should read the OP's question again. He/She asked if its possible to make a fantasy MMO without elves, dwarves etc, in which thehavoc listed some exsamples that proved it was.

Actually the Age of Conan, lore its based on so called low-fantasy lore,a hybrid involving already existing real world, with some low fantasy elements(for which even the real ancient civilizations were considering them true, such as mythology, magic, mystics, gods etc etc).

Hyboria as a world, its, at some point, identical to our Earth, in certain era of its existence.

The fall of Atlantis the most advanced civilization, its recorded in many , not just SF records, but in the real human history-Ancient Hellenic world.

The geological changes of the continents as well as such represented in Hyborean map)

The races in Age of Conan, are non existent, considering they are all humans, and only divided culture wise(and subracial like caucasians(white),asiate(yellow race) and black race)...and all that taken inspiration of the already existing civilizations in todays world

     Stygia-Ancent Egypt,Asyria

    Aquilonia- ancient Roman Empire

    Cimmeria- Nordic countries

     Khitai -ancient China

    Vendhya - India

Iranistan - name says it all (Irani - stan(in turkish- land) -meaning Land of Iranians (Persia)

     Nordheim -Nordic Vikings-Norway

Therefore, i would not put AoC on a same pair with Wow, or WAR, or lineage 2, since its based on a totally different concept concerning the LORE it uses as a base of the game.

Medievial , with low fantasy elements present in todays world's records of ancient civilizations mythologies.

The original poster asked "What would an MMO without orcs, dwarfs and elves be like?"

There are a lot of different possibilities. Some people have pointed out that AoC and Ryzom are MMO worlds like that. Those involve other fantasy creatures. Obviously another option would be a historical type game set in the past.

One I've come across that is different from all of those is called Yostan. It's still in development so nobody has played it, but it is being developed by the same indie developer group that created my favorite game, Magic of the Gods (which does have elves and dwarves, so enough about that). According to their forums, Yostan is a project to convert the forum-based strategy and role playing game called "Nations and Empires" into a regular MMORPG with 3-D graphics.

Nations and Empires (and Yostan) is set in a medieval type technology level. It is set in a fictional world. It has a few legends of monsters and magic, but apparently none of the players have ever seen any monsters or any magic and the legends about them may just be myths. For example, the sailors believe in sea serpents, but no player has ever seen one. So far as I know there aren't even any legends about any elves, dwarves, orcs or dragons. They've never heard of any such thing.

If they ever finish Yostan, you will perhaps have what you seek: a fantasy world MMORPG with no elves, dwarves or orcs and maybe no magic or monsters. It does have a massive scale. It's an entire planet. It has epic amounts of lore and backstory. An entire history and a whole library of files about it (called the "Library of Scrolls" on their website.)

Looking at their forum, I see where some people have played Nations and Empires as a role playing game where they wander around having their own adventures, but most of the players are rulers of provinces or commanders of armies. They routinely have battles with thousands of troops on each side. At least two of the province leaders have declared independence and are now fighting against the empire they declared independence from. It's sort of a combination RPG and RTS. If it ever really was an MMORPG with graphics instead of being mostly text like it is now, that would be an awesome game.

    Their website is at www.nationsandempires1.blogspot.com

and their forum is as www.naegame.proboards83.com.

    Check it out.

Actiually, it would be great to have a MMO that is based on history instead of fantasy. No mages, elfs, orcks and other stuff.

There are several times that would be great for an MMO, the periods of the Crusades would fit perfectly for a PvP based MMO with charging knights and big battles. Imperial Rome could also be intresting, england around 11th or 12th century , the american war of independence, Scandinavia and nothern europe around the 9th century and so on.

The big change here would be that you wouldnt really have a healer and not the same crowd control you have in our game but it would be intresting anyways. I really hope for a game like this :D

If we are just talking fantasy without the stereo types or only with humans there are some games out there: Guildwars, AoC, uppcoming Spellborn...

Cimmeria is actually based on the Celts, particulary the Irish. Conan was actually an Irish hero who is mentioned in the book of conquest (the ancient story about Tuatha de daanans) and is said to killed the evil Fomori "Balor of the evil eye".

Hmm, they exist, you seem to have missed them.  Roma Victor (ancient Rome), WWII Online, PotBS all fit the historical requirements you mentioned. (and nary an Orc nor Dwarf to be seen)

It would be just like every other MMO, except it wouldn't have orcs, dwarves or elves.

You need to be more specific on what you are looking for because their are plenty of games without what you are asking for.

    Tabula Rasa

    The Chronicles of Spellborn

    Hellgate

    Aion

    Pirates of The Burning Sea

    Guild Wars

I picked the newest ones I could think of since that is what the OP seemed to be asking about

It would be like a breath of fresh air. I admit though I love the fantasy genre but at some point you have to throw something different at us to keep us entertained.

pre cu SWG was the best MMO ive ever played and not a orc dwarf or elf in sight TBH im still trying to find its replacement

The MMO industry has been lacking in tapping into other genres even though there are very few and far between is more Sci-Fi MMOs, maybe a Post-Apoclyptic MMO, Maybe an MMO based on Real Life Events like the Civil War, or even somehow MMOs based off of existing IPs that have potential in the market for niche and mature gamers does anyone remember the X-Com Series? How about a MMO off the Aliens Vs. Predator Franchise?, Resident Evil?, Freelancer, Wingcommander, or more SuperHero themed type of MMOs ( DC Universe  but thats going to suck and Champions Im keep a close eye) The list could go on what would make a good MMO but most would have to be skilled based for those themes to work really, but Im sure I could come up with some original ideas for a themed MMO that doesnt have anything to do with the fantasy genre..

You figure for the last 10-15 yrs its all really been about the world of fantasy and the list of MMOs of that type of genre are that evident , dont you think its time for a change?

  • AbrahmmAbrahmm Member Posts: 2,448

What would an MMO be without orcs, dwarfs, or elves? Orignal.

Honestly, fantasy is so completely overplayed in the MMO genre, and incredibly lame on top of that. I can't for the life of me figure out the draw to this setting and I find it incredibly boring.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
