IF they plan to keep their 2004 release then there probably not gonna have a open Beta cuz there are soo many things still needed to be done right now.
The difference between open beta and closed beta, closed beta is when you sign up during a certain period, (ie, week a to week b) then, depending on your beta testing resume, you may be selected, open beta, you can create an account any time during open beta, and automatically be accepted, closed beta is usually to get rid of bugs, open is to stress test the servers.
I think that open beta will be sometime between september and october, probably mid-october, then end a week or two before realease in November for the Christmas rush.

Please continue to check www.blizzard.com for updates and information on when the World of Warcraft Open Beta test will begin.

the stress test was awesome and i didnt come across that many bugs, all there was was a few clipping errors so the ope shouldnt be too far away. they dont have to fix much

I expect Open Beta when EQ2 releases (if WoW is not ready at that time). Otherwise I expect them to post they have decided to skip the Open Beta and release the game. Nobody would complain about that.
hell, i know that i would complain!!i would lke to get a chance to play WoW before its release to make sure that i dont waste my hard earned money on buying a crappy game!!!

I'm pretty sure WoW will be done long before EQ2.

You are 100 percent correct. But SOE will release EQ2 "long before" it is done .
WoW had a nice stress test beta period already. Closed beta has sent out additional invitations recently. Word is that the game ROCKS, and even in beta is reported to be better than some games are at release, both in gameplay and being relatively bug-free.
Also, if you compare the OFFICIAL websites, WoW is letting out WAY more info on the gameplay than, say, EQ2.
To say anymore might violate NDA, but let's jsut say that folks that have experienced WoW already are HUGE fans of the game. And on a FUNNY note, I personally heard folks that were ONLY in the ten days or so of Stress Test Beta of WoW say things like..."oh no!!! the stress test is over!!!! what am I going to do for the next 2 months until the game releases???!!!"
Basically, WoW is very popular, and even if you are not in Beta, you can find much OFFICIAL info about it from the game's company, Blizzard. For whatever reasons, SOE has NOT been very forthcoming with official info on EQ2, even though both games are slated to release around Nov 15. Suffice to say, that many folks will be going with WoW soon as it is out.
Final PLUS...WoW IS supported on Macintosh, AND is slated to play on a NON-MAXED-OUT PC. On the other hand, I have friends who ended up buying a TOPPED OUT Alienware PC ($$$$$) just so they could play EQ2 because the specs DO list very high machine requirements to play it and EQ2 is not slated to (NEVER as of now?) be avail for Mac.

The NDA for WoW has been lifted, it hasn't for EQ2. That is why you know so much more about WoW than EQ2.

Let's see... One company has an excellent reputation for fine games and has much info avail on its game due out Nov 15. Another company reportedly has a very bad rep for its games and has very little info avail for its game due out Nov 15.
Yeah, what's up with EQ2 not having any information... their keeping it "hush"... as for WoW... you can't get away from the flooding that Blizzard is doing to the people.

A bug-free game doesn't mean a finished game.

I ran the stress test for WoW on a notebook. Radeon Mobility 9000, 512MB and it worked wonderfully. Even on a wireless network, too.
FYI, the Guild Wars E34E event ran great on my notebook.
Based on the requirements. I don't think I'll be able to touch EQ2 on my notebook.
