Another what should I play thread (for those who are familiar)

TangogulfTangogulf Member UncommonPosts: 58

Hi all;

I do apologize for this thread, because, I know that there are many like it out there.  I'm looking for a game that is actually being played (as opposed to beta, in development etc) that has the following criteria:

1/  Fantasy setting preferred.

2/ Crafting, trading and setting up shop.

3/  Ability to enter combat is optional.  I do enjoy the tactical elements of combat, but find grinding somewhat tedious.  As well, if the tactical combat has a overall strategic affect/reason on gameplay, it intrigues me even more than just a level grind.

4/ Ability to own a home.  Perhaps even having player made cities and towns.

5/ Active economy

6/optional PVP

7/reasonable graphics

I realise that I maybe describing UO here.  Everything that I have read about UO is that it engages one in a separate existence.  The problem I have with that game is that the 640 x 480 resolution just looks terrible on my 19" monitor.  Everything else about it sounds great.

So my question is:  is there another game out there that offers a similar type of separate existence that UO once did?

Again my apologies for reposting the same question, its just that my needs are somewhat particular and Im not as familiar with the games that are presently out there.

I never found a game like UO again :(

The last 2 days i checked every MMORPG site i could find and i have no clue what i should play. :(

The last game i played was AO.Was fun to fight but not much for me to do besides fighting.Would be great if a game existed where i could build a house, open a playershop and do some crafting again :)

I recently started playing DAOC it has a uoish feel to me and you can do crafting and set up a player shop in the housing area if it suits your fancy. I like how easy it is to find groups in this game. I still play uo too 2d mode only though and yes i have a 19 inch monitor you can set it to 800x600 viewing area windowed mode which makes it a lot better.

Thanks for the replies.  I have been looking into DAOC myself, and it seems they have made quite a few changes including houses.  I may lean that way too.

If you are looking for a good crafting system, stay far, far away from DAoC.  All resources are purchased through NPCs and not gathered.   Once you start crafting an item, you get to watch a bar slowly fill up.   You WILL need to grind combat to get the money for resources.  The housing system is extremely limited with all player owned structures tucked away in huge housing-only zones.  It's nearly impossible to run a store and there are NO player towns.   Don't get me wrong, DAoC has a lot going for it.  But don't buy it for the housing and certainly not for the crafting.

If you like crafting and housing, the best system currently (IMHO) is in Star Wars Galaxies.  I realize it's not fantasy, but it has all the features you mentioned.  There is in-game support for player cities and it is very possible to have a pure crafting character.  Almost every item in game is player-made.  The game has its flaws, but it is a crafter's paradise.

I have also heard that Horizens has a good crafting system, but I have never tried that game.

Again, thanks for the replies. I will look into both games you have mentioned. In regards to SWG, I have heard alot of griping on various boards about that game.
I'm wondering, is it as bad as everyone says that it is? I'm trying to get a feel for that game, and it is hard to tell, when one reads so much negative about it.

Personally, I liked swg a lot and I had no problems with it. The fact that it used a skill system instead of a lvl system was something that I liked a lot, I prefer skills over lvls. One of the reasons why I liked this game so much, was because of the housing. I liked the fact that I could run to the houses of players I know, and just hang out, it was also cool going into someone's shop and seeing how they've decorated it. Now there's even player cities, vehicles, and mounts as well, that were implemented in the game.

    DAoC:

Played it for a long time. Was quite fun to play but crafting is boring and you need alot of money to do it.

    Horizons:

I really think about testing this game but 3 friends of mine got it when it was released.1 played for a week and the other 2 played only 1 day. They usually have the same favours as is have.Don't know if the game changed somehow till then but if someone buys a game and only manages to play it 1 day it cant be the best :D

SWG isn't for everyone.... the PvE is repetitive, the PvP is unbalanced, and the questing system is poor.  The game disapointed a lot of players because it does not manage to capture the spirit of the license at all.  But they really, really did get the crafting right.  The system is complex and varied.  There are multiple ways to sell your products and there are no craft mules.  Player towns are supported by in-game systems and the economy is active.  If you want to play a dedicated crafting character, it's a very good choice.

your asking for DAoC but if you want more PvP i would suggest Shadowbane, give it a try, play to whole 15 days free and if u like buy the game for like 2 dollars like i did rofl and if u really like buy the expansion

Thanks for the replies. Its been an informative thread for me.

SWG: Enough has been said that the crafting system really does intrigue me. I'm not one to throw the baby out with the bathwater, so I will have to consider it more. I have to say, an active economy/crafting systems really does rank up there at the top of my list, so I would be a fool not to consider SWG.

DAOC: Definitely going to give it a try. In fact, not on a PvP server (more about that in a second). A decent combat system also ranks up there in the priority levels. I recognize that there are problems with this game in that it isnt the seemless existence that I have been looking for. But they have implemented enough changes that it has my attention.

PvP: I like the idea of PvP, but hear enough hostile banter on boards with people who engage in it. I guess this is the nature of the beast. People combat one another, they are going to argue. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes in regards to PvP/PvE. My personal idea is that I would love to engage in a PvP that is well implemented, I'm just not seeing it right now. Too much arguing and turmoil for my likings.
I think when I said PvP, I was thinking of a game that it can be a part of the game if the overall strategic outlook calls for it...just not the centre piece of it all.

Anyways, I have blabbered on enuf, about all this. I will continue to look into SWG and any other games you good people can recommend
