You know I was just looking over the original official press release from last October about the LucasArts-BioWare joint project. It only refers to the project as be a "Ground-Breaking Interactive Entertainment Product.". So whatever it is, it maybe online or offline and it may or may not be Star Wars related. Though looking at the "The Wair is Over" postcard, it does look like KOTOR. So I guess we all have to wait and see on October 21st. To debate if its online or offline seems pretty pointless right now.
When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!
I totally agree. I mean I know the glowstick army [Jedi/Dark Jedi, Sith maybe even Krath... or Jedi Covenant if it's way back enough] will obviously be pretty huge if they allow anyone to make such a character.
Personally, I'd love to play a spy or some sort of Han Solo type rogue smuggler who sometimes chooses to help the 'good guys' and sometimes works for the 'bad guys' [Such as the Syndicate]... y'know... wherever the deal is sweetest
Point being that there are a lot more fun things to play as in the Star Wars universe than JUST the Force Weilders... my first character will not be a Force user no matter what. Gimme a good blaster at my side
As for the game being a 'groundbreaking interactive product', I realize they didn't want to give away exactly what it is.... so they worded it thusly... BUT if you're going to call it such a thing, it definitely SHOULD be something special and not just an attempt to Out-WoW WoW [I saw someone say that before and thought it was genius hehe] with a Star Wars skin.
I'm sure that the features of World of Warcraft which made the game so popular [of which like 90% were just 'inspired by previous MMORPG's, but done well] will make an appearance in this new game... but there has GOT to be more to it than that.
Pressure is on for them to deliver big...
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.
I've been trying to find an article from some of the Bioware peeps who went over to Obsidian. Before they went there was a comment made about not wanting to work with Lucas again as he was too demanding. Thought it was hilarious to see EA take over Bioware as this would be one way around that. If anyone remembers that article and has the link, PM it to me please. Bioware has made several great games such as my favorite, NWN. They also gave assistance to the Obsidian peeps with NWN2. Would be nice to see a SW MMO using the NWN2's engine and with the quest lines Bioware is known for.
they have already licensed the hero engine...a long time ago, so it will no doubt be built upon that engine.

i personally hope they leave jedi out of it, except for npcs. players shouldnt be able to be one.
I havent seen anything online either, but barnes and noble carries the magazine I speak of. The issue this month has a mini MMO magazine inside of it and there is an article on it.
I hope theres a scoundrel/smuggler class in the KOTOR MMO. My favorite Star Wars characters that are scoundrel/smugglers are Han Solo, Chewbacca, Lando, Mission Vao, Zaalbar, Atton Rand, and Jolee Bindo. Yeah I'm a wookiee lover too, lol. When I played Star Wars Galaxies, I was a Wookiee Smuggler named Titicaca. So it would be really cool for me to smuggle in the old republic, just as I have smuggled already during the civil war, lol.
Plus I hope they choose the Mandalorian War, that was talked about in KOTOR 2 as the PVP war. I don't know but out of all the wars talked about in both games. The Mandalorian Wars seemed to be the most bad-ass kick-ass war, lol. That why the game could explore more about the mandalorins. All we know from the games and movies is, they tried to conquer the galaxy, lost and became mercs, then Mandalore helped bring them back together, then thousands of yets later one was cloned like billion times for a war, then he died, then as far as we know the last one fell into a sarlacc pit.
Note: Sorry if I spelt any of the Star Wars names wrong. I'm a Star Wars fan, but I only stick to the movies, tv shows, and video games. So I don't know what goes on in the expanded universe nor do I care. I'm happy just knowing the 6 movies, the tv shows, and the video games.

in terms of combat can't imagine many non-jedi characters or classes who could take on a jedi/sith. a jango fett style bounty hunter would be up for it with all his gismoe's and poison darts. a droid with shielding ala destroyer droid or like the ones who do fight the jedi with the flashy sticks. but just han solo-esque some guy in a leather jerkin and a gun is going to be WEAK.

think of any other viable classes/characters?

Its all about ballance - and what most people seem to misunderstand is the power of Force Users. There are key Force users, namely the one's which are famous enough to really 'name' [Heroes and Villains of Star Wars] but Force Users aren't really the gods they're made out to be. Plenty of Force users fall against other enemies.
Remember in ATTACK OF THE CLONES, how Jedi were falling left and right, brought down by those pesky clanking battledroids due to the numbers? But of course, the 'HEROES' were surviving along with few others. Same as with Obi-Wan VS JANGO FETT, who is of Mandalorian background. I'd say that fight was pretty even for the most part - Boba being a very minor annoyance to Obi-Wan.
All you have to do is look at the history of Star Wars. It all sort of boils down to 'level of skill' and for that reason, I'm quite certain the game will have a level system. If you look at the Star Wars Role Playing Game by Wizards of the Coast, you'll see how a seasoned member of any class can be just as valuable as a Force user.
So what we really are looking at here is... a limiting on how powerful Force Users will become - for ballance purposes. This won't be a 'FORCE UNLEASHED'. You won't be REVAN or THE EXILE. You will be a Force User... but not THE LEETFORCE. Thus I think the only one's who are going to be disappointed will be the players who expect to be DARTH NOOBWALKER and THEAPPR3NTICE3842 [btw I hope such names will simply not be allowed to exist in the game...] but other than that, the classes can be ballanced fairly without overpowering or underpowering anyone.
Don't expect to play a hero... just a 'common' Force user ballanced against other classes of the same level. Fame/Infamy will come from your choices, not your 'power'.
Which to be honest is fine with me.
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.
Its official. There are even screens of it in the new Total PC Gamer magazine, or whatever its called, the one wrapped with 5 free gifts in it.
Did we ever get confirmation of some sort on this? What magazine/month for sure? Any scans possibly? I'll have a look around today when I pass by a book store which usually has a lot of magazines...
Re: KOTOR I & II, KOTOR I is definately superior both in terms of game quality and storytelling. II was very ambitious, but to LucasArts' fault, they forced Obsidian to push the game out in about 9 months which really isn't a lot of time to develop and complete a game. A LOT of content had to be cut - so much in fact that there are groups out there trying to reconstruct the missing parts of the game.
The second game is not without it's merits however - Atton 'Jaq' Rand is one of my fave characters.

I agree the storyline in KOTOR 1 was way better. The first time I played through and saw the big mind blowing story arc. You know which one I mean if you have played the game. I don't want to give out a spoiler, if someone hasn't played it. Plus I enjoyed twisting the story and trying to find every last small story arc in the game. As you can tell I played through many time as both male and female and light and dark. So I do know every single story arc in the game. I wish more games had player driven story archs and moral choices in them.
KOTOR 2 was good, but it has a broken storyline that never really ended. Though I did try the same thing with the 2nd game with the story arcs. With only one that I can think of that I never finished, but it was a known bug. Also it was due to the game being rushed as most of us already know.
Lastly if the annoucement on the 21st is an online game or an offline game, it doesn't matter to me. As long as we get a really good Star Wars game out of it. Plus I hope it has a new combat system, thats one thing I didn't like about both KOTOR games. I really dislike turn-based and queue based combat system. I hope they go with an action based(If its offline.) or the typical MMORPG cooldown timer type combat for specials with a normal damage attack(If its online.).
When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!
Well I've looked pretty much at every gaming magazine I could... the only thing related to BioWare was a Dragon Age: Origins preview in PC GAMER magazine.... so no luck there.
But that's okay... 11 more days until we actually learn something.
To be perfectly honest, I'm surprised we're even getting an announcement THIS YEAR. I was pretty certain we wouldn't hear squat until Dragon Age: Origins was out, then they'd wait a month and start in on the 'mystery project' finally.
I can't help but feel all the constant rumours and of course the CEO's 'slip' had something to do with an earlier than expected reveal. Ah well, who cares what the cause is right? We just wanna know already

yeah jedi did die we know. but how many non jedi characters could really take on a jedi one on one, even a common one. just wondering what viable classes there could be other than jedi.
all I can think of is
very well skilled/equiped bounty hunter such as fett. pretty much got to be non human. so mandalorian/wookie/force sensistive human or twi'lek. poison darts, sniping, rocket launchers, jeck packs the whole shebang . these are the rogues
advanced droid. think of a Hk47 or grevious style droid with shields and guns or those mele like force pikes the bots in the films use to fight jedi. these could be the tanks, could a human soldier really stand up to a jedi? No.
and of course the would be classes within jedi, the healer, the mage, the mele DPS. when I say classes throughout this post I hope there would not be WoW style classes, but even in sandbox games you still have classes just not fixed ones.
I have to play through both of the KOTOR games now. Does it really matter If I dont play the first one? Or is it really worth it?
MUST play kotor 1 before 2.
you will not understand storyline of 2 unless you play 1. the storyline in 1 is better. the game mechanics are improved some in number 2, so if you come from 2 you will miss the small improvements when playing 1. ie in 2 you can influence party, which is fun, if you go from influencing people to not being able its annoying.
I know because i played them wrong order first time
Why are people still calling it KOTOR? Its called the Old Republic......
The Old Republic was only mentioned in a survey, so it could be just a code name. People know KOTOR, so they are more comfortable using it. Thats why people are still calling it KOTOR.

I'll agree witht he comfortable part. But it was not just mentiioned in a survey. Star Wars: The Old Republic is one of the names LucasArts recetly registered a Trademark for and many people believe this will be the title of the game.
However, as nothing has been officially announced, and everyone knows KOTOR, that's what is probably best to use in reference to the game for now.

The Old Republic MMO could take place in the KOTOR era or in the last years of the Republic during the Clone Wars which seems more probable since the Clone Wars is George Lucas baby so Im thinking its during that time...

I did a survey for LEC that asked questions about The Old Republic. Back in 06.

It matters a little bit. Also KotOR1 has alot better story IMHO.
Anyone know if MMORPG.com got the invite? I just wanna know if they are giving these out to MMO sites as well. I know Massively.com got one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
yeah jedi did die we know. but how many non jedi characters could really take on a jedi one on one, even a common one. just wondering what viable classes there could be other than jedi.
all I can think of is
and of course the would be classes within jedi, the healer, the mage, the mele DPS. when I say classes throughout this post I hope there would not be WoW style classes, but even in sandbox games you still have classes just not fixed ones.

Why are people still calling it KOTOR? Its called the Old Republic......

The Old Republic was only mentioned in a survey, so it could be just a code name. People know KOTOR, so they are more comfortable using it. Thats why people are still calling it KOTOR.

I'll agree witht he comfortable part. But it was not just mentiioned in a survey. Star Wars: The Old Republic is one of the names LucasArts recetly registered a Trademark for and many people believe this will be the title of the game.
However, as nothing has been officially announced, and everyone knows KOTOR, that's what is probably best to use in reference to the game for now.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7

The Old Republic MMO could take place in the KOTOR era or in the last years of the Republic during the Clone Wars which seems more probable since the Clone Wars is George Lucas baby so Im thinking its during that time...

I did a survey for LEC that asked questions about The Old Republic. Back in 06.
