Thanks for the information and dates! image

The First known Fantasy ever to be "published" was Illiad and Odyssey.  Homer is said to be the first tell of fantasy and adventures of all times.  Many current fantasy creatures stems from these set of books which dates back about 800 Century B.C. Cyclops, giants, and Sirens (among others) were first introduced in this novel.  Many novels adapt these creatures into their own fantasy books and games. And, yes, I would label this as fantasy as every major college university would label as classical fantasy as well and not mythology.  Also, hundred of books were written in the middle ages that dwelt with fantasy as well.  Some of Shakespeare's plays were based upon fantasy.

       Actually....

Siddartha pre-dates Homer and the Illiad by a couple of thousand years. It is the oldest KNOWN classical fantasy story. It is the story about a very ancient hero on a quest. There is also the story of Gilgamesh. Which I think might also pre-date the Illiad (but I am not 100% sure it has been a very long time since I last read Gilgamesh.)

Every idea Homer and the Greeks got, that now influences our current Western fiction, and tales, was directly influenced by the Egyptians, Ethiopians, and Nubians. Every idea the Egyptions, Ethiopians, and Nubians got, was directly influenced by the Persians, Babalyonians (sp), Hittites, Assyrians, and other middle eastern/Asia Minor, empires and peoples. And... all of them were directly influenced by the oldest known civilization - the Akkadians.

First science fiction book ever written was Metropolis in 1926 by Fritz Lang.

Isaac Asimov's first book Pebble in the Sky was not written until 1950. Three months later he wrote I, Robot.

Hope that counts as proof image

Any ideas where Assimov got his ideas from?

Theoretically, the first known written tale of spaceships was......... in the Bible. Yes, it specifically makes mention of a phyical object from outter space, coming down, and taking someone, then lifting off. And it was witnessed by a huge crowd. Anyone know the exact book and verse? image

Even more theoretically, ancient libaries (libary at Alexandria, libaries of  the most ancient empires in South America - the Olmecs......, libary in Egypt, libary in Ethiopia, and even further back libaries in Babalyon(sp), and the Akkadian libary,) all specifically show star charts, detailed and correct maps of our solar system..... as well as pictures and stories of spaceships. Some of them pre-date the spaceship story in the Bible. Recently, on March 16, 2004 the NY Times on the front page (check it out on microfilm at your local libary) ran a story about the newest of 2 new planets in our solar system discovered. Modern scientists have named it "Sedna". They did not mention that this newest discovered planet (which is glowing red) was already known, written about, and shown, on star charts in Egypt, South America, and ancient Middle East/Asia Minor empires like the Akkadian Empire. The NY Times also did not use the name that the ancients said is the right name of it. image

Thus, it can be said Sci-Fi is actually Sci-Truth. And came before Fantasy. But most people will never travel to the sites still in existance all over the world and see for theirselves, or investigate for theirselves (Investigate the part of the Bible that mentions the spaceshiip. Visit their local libary and read the NY Times story on the newly discovered planet). So are stuck with our current believe that Sci-Fact is behind Sci-Fi and not the other way around.

Sooo........ in keeping with the common, popluar, belief - Fantasy came before Sci-Fi. image That is why the market is over-saturated with Fantasy MMORPGs, and few Sci-Fact......ahem...... Sci-Fi MMORPGs. image (Maybe we all can make another thread "Which came first? Sci-Fi or Fantasy?" heheh.)

I think there needs to be more sci-fi mmorpgs which does not have any of this D&D gameplay style crap... Like me desperetly seeking for a 3D space flight combat games which I have not seen in a while.

There was Jumpgate, it had a very nice newton phsyics flight, and the learning curve was very steep. Too bad it does not have the large playerbase or have a large playerbase for another two years.

X2-Online will not come out for another year or so.

Vendetta is the only up coming game I know that has twitch based combat.. The problem is, vendettas more like a first person shooter set in space then it is as a real space flight shooter, along with the very simple ship config. In a nutshell, this game is like the "Descent series" but without the corridors. The game is not finished yet. E&Bers have no problem with this.

SWG: JTLS, I hear its gonna suck read badly.

agreed with oriiginal post, I don't think it's a coincedence that teh top two games are sci-fi.

Maybe I missed it, but noone mentioned DarkSpace? I've been playing it and having a blast. Its a nice change. You can usually get a 5 day free triel, but they just announced 30 day free trial accounts are being given away at http://www.gamergod.com

If anyone tries it out, look me up as Malianea. I'll be happy to answer any questions and play every night CST.

I wish there was a Freelancer mmorpg.  Even tho it had a few problems, i think the game world and the feel of space in Freelancer was incredible.  On top of that, the space combat is the most fun space combat i've ever played in any game.  If they just took this model, added alot more depth and variation to the game, i'd be there in a hearbeat.

Sadly, scifi mmorpg's are all sim-based it seems :(

lol....a fellow DarkSpace player.::::28:: What faction and fleet do you belong too Malianea?

I'm with the ICC faction and Fatal Sqad fleet. I haven't had as much time to play over the last couple of months with having to move, my work load and putting together a new pc, but I'm finally getting time to start capping planets again and torping K'luth and UGTO.::::40:::::::39::

As far as the debate of which came first Sci-Fi or Fantasy. Does it matter, really? Webster defines fantasy as "the free play of creative imagination." Sci-fi is technically just a form of fantasy, and a different way to escape from one's every day life to relax and have fun whether that is in a book, movie or game. Some people prefer fantasy that is more medievil with swords, sorcery, elves, goblins and dragons. Others prefer to warp around the cosmos in a space ship with a lasergun or phaser or blaster strapped to their side. I happen to like both.

It would be nice if they had a sci-fi mmorpg based on Asimov works. Star Trek and Star Gate would be interesting too. Don't know if any developer could get the licensing for that though as it would surely cost $$$$$$$. Of course, if SWG was produced why not Star Trek or Star Gate.

I just noticed that most space mmorpg are rather point and click instead of having wing-commander style space flight combat.

Again, I thought vedetta online would be the next up coming space flight sims in the game. However, I was quite disappointed that it turned out to be another FPS in space.

If there was an space flight mmorpg that uses a flight engine like Jumpgate or Homeplanet using eye-candy graphics like EVE, I would be there in a heart beat. Unfortunitly, I doubt that would ever happen. Just because I suck at stragety.

But this is all just a dream.

yep, i played Eve Online :)  In fact thats what finally got me to register here for the trial version, i used to just lurk.

Problem was Eve is more simulation, its more or less point and click.  I think i'm looking for more what the other poster said, something more fps but with the depth or trading of maybe an Eve, and the possibility to upgrade into capital style ships.  Also another beef i had with Eve was that the world just didnt feel alive.  I would log into Eve, then play some single player Freelancer and Freelancer felt like the world was bustling with all kinds of activity in comparison.  Just the docking sequences with the npc talk that your docking or the local authorities constantly checking your storage made the world feel so much more alive, albeit repetetive after so long(but that could easily be improved upon imo).  Anyways, to make a long story short Eve wasnt what i was looking for.

I'm a big Freelancer fan tho, especially the combat.  I was told Jumpgate is more Freelancer style but havent gotten around to checking it out yet.

I'm curious, do most people into scifi based games watch scifi shows like Stargate, Star Trek, or something along those lines?  I swear playing Freelancer after just watching Stargate makes it alot better forsome reason for me.  I just wish there was a game based on Stargate`

I know about the level 200 thing. But you are right, It is true I have not played AO hardcore in a while. At most I play once or twice a week. I've been busy checking out EvE and DAoC. And I do not have the Shadow Lands expansion because I'm still enjoying checking out every millimeter of the original AO gameworld.

The original guy I was responding to on page 1 never said if he had reached Level 200. Even if he has reached level 200, there might be some items he will want, or need in the original AO world. I agree though that there is much more for a Level 200 character (and even a level 150 to 199) in SL than in the original AO world.

Forget both Fantasy and Sci-fi.... we need more Horror and Giant Robot mmorpgs...

  • diegolinkdiegolink Member Posts: 195

Im so tired of fucking gay elves.

Im a true Tolkien fan....but...........i hate fantasy games.

    Some Sci-fi mmorpgs:

    Anarchy Online

    Earth & Beyond

    EVE Online

    Neocron

    Planetside

    Star Wars Galaxies

    Starport

    UPCOMING SCI-FI MMORPGs:

    Atriarch

    Face of Mankind

    The Matrix Online

The Saga of Ryzom (well its kind fantasy/sci-fi, but it looks different from EverCrap and its sons)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

We have many Sci-fi mmorpgs............the problem is to find good ones.

By now, AO is the best Sci-fi MMORPG.

    Give it a shot

PS: Dont play Shadowlands if you are going to play AO

Heres another game that some people forgot:

    http://www.aceofangels.com

    Anyone check it out??

And I wonder if it will get added to the mmorpg directory.. of course you will need the developers permission to do that.

  • DrakaeonDrakaeon Member Posts: 630

The community is terrible and gameplay is in the toilet. Ace of Angels is a no-no. Good try though. That is actually a MMORPG that I never heard of.

  • LreguizrLreguizr Member Posts: 207

    How about this one:

    http://www.universeunlimited.com/

The game is still under development and this is another 3d space combat game.

The demo will come out for this game soon.

Whats wrong Ace of Angels? The game is still under development, it will be another 2 years before it goes gold, plus it's another game that will be based on player skills instead of point and click. Actually its in its alpha stages. Yeha a lot of people will throw a ton of negative comments on this game, it be worth mentioning. The community isn't that bad as if it was to be a hostile community bashing newbies.
