Stargate Sg-1 and Atlantis

Been watching the sg-1 seasons on dvd and was wondering when I should start watching the Atlantis seasons?  After season 8?  Or is it ok to just start after I finish sg-1?  Lota gate fans here, figured I'd ask. lol

It is a spinoff series, but you will be lost when the Ori are mentioned. You do not need to know SG-1 in depth, but it helps understand the story, characters and relationships much, much better.

So yes, I would say wait it out.

To add, season 5 (the current season) of Atlantis is the last.

Stargate Universe starts sometime next year.

yeah i would just stick with SG1 ..... atlantis really had some bad acting imo. And it was a little odd for them to be fighting another enemy then the goa'uld, i dunno .... i just never liked it.

I believe Atlantis started around season 7-8 of SG1. While you won't miss anything by watching SG1 all the way through first, there is an episode or two where the episode of one lead into the events of the other (such as, SG1 finds an item and then passes it off to Atlantis to help them out with something else). Also, McKay is introduced in SG1, becomes a regular in Atlantis, but visits in later SG1 episodes to help out Earth-side.

no the atlantis people were fighting those dudes that ate other dudes. Becuase both shows are supposed to be set in the same universe, it just didnt make sense for me.

They were fighting the Wraith. They are in a whole new galaxy is why there is a different enemy.

The link provides the answer but I will put it here. You watch Stargate SG-1 Season 8 and Stargate Atlantis Season 1 together.

And now Atlantis has an entirely new enemy.  Unfortunately, I already know who they are but I wont ruin it for the rest of you.

All I can say is this season of Atlantis will be pretty kick ass.

I watched the entire SG-1 Series on DVD and finished it up after Atlantis Season 3 wrapped up. Then I started watching the Atlantis DvDs.There was one episode in season 8(or maybe 9) of SG-1 where they visit Atlantis but I had absolutely nothing ruined for me. Or, actually that isn't true..... After I started getting the Atlantis episodes on on DVD at Netflix I made the mistake of reading some of the member reviews. The bastards like to lay down the spoilers. I suggest you keep things clean and finish up SG-1. If you absolutely want to follow the time-line, Season 8 of SG-1 and Season 1 of Atlantis start at the same time.

I never much watched SG1...didn't much care for it. As for Atlantis, I am a fan n watch it weekly since it first aired. So I don't feel you hafta watch one to enjoy the other.

I agree here.  The only thing that gets missed are a few of the inside jokes and such.  Most of the other things are pretty transparent.

And lastly.. Same for the movies?  Can I just watch em after SG-1?  Or anytime?

Well.  Arc of Truth is kind of the final part in the Ori storyline, so that won't go too well without knowing the series.  Continuum is a stand alone story.  I don't really know if I would want to watch it without knowing more about the characters though.
