So what am I in for?

I am a huge Sci-Fi fan! I have been thinking about this game for a while. I have read that you can play this game for a year, get smoked, and lose everything! (Or does insurance cover that?)

If you want to put all your eggs in one basket, sure, have fun losing everything you had. Eve certainly won't prevent you from doing stupid things.

Just make sure you keep your clone up to date and never fly something you can't afford to lose and you will be fine.

    Playing: Nothing

    Looking forward to: Nothing

See it like this; EVE is darwinism and anarchy on a massive scale, if you make a mistake it'll cost you.

If you realize those facts then all of a sudden you'll think twice about putting everything you own into one ship, because it's STUPID and an 'accident' waiting to happen.

If you realize those facts then all of a sudden you'll think twice about going into dangerous territory unprepared and without intel, because it's STUPID and an 'accident' waiting to happen.

If you realize those facts then all of a sudden you'll think twice about flying big ships you can't really fly efficiently, because it's STUPID and an 'accident' waiting to happen.

It's very simple, to be successful in EVE you need to not be an idiot, and to be prepared to invest some time and effort into reading and learning stuff, before doing it. That is all. Thing is that most people can't be bothered to put in effort, then things go wrong and they blame the game for it.

If you are a year old...... and put 100% of your possesions in a ship and get ganked....you deserved it!! lol

Insurance will cover the base cost of the ship you're flying when it explodes, which may or may not reflect its true value.

One of the things about Eve is that if you want to go out and do the fun stuff and not sit in highsec all day too scared to venture off into the badlands, you're going to have to be prepared to take in the shorts once in a while. It's about managing risk, more than anything else.

So, say you're venturing off to mine in a gravimetric site in lowsec. Do you need to risk that 120M+ ISK mostly uninsurable Hulk, or maybe take a bit longer mining it out, but take a Coveter which costs almost nothing to replace?

Of do you move everything you own out to that station your alliance owns out in 0.0? Or do you leave some stuff behind in Empire just in case?

Do you fly a pimp tech 2 ship in Factional Warfare? Or do you decide to fly a plain tech 1 ship? Is it worth the trade off?

And I'm not saying flying pimped out ships is bad. I'm an industrialist mostly, I've been working on my combat skills but they're still woefully sub-par for how long I've been playing. But since I'm a fairly successful industrialist I can afford to fly near top-of-the-line ships and try to make up for my lack of skills with better equipment. But whenever I lose a frig flying around in the militia fleet that's a 7M ISK loss. Cruisers are closer to 20M - and that's after insurance. Of course, I realize combat in Eve is more than F1-F8 so I don't die very often, but the point remains.
