Newbie Help

Just started my demo account.  Was killed twice by desert demons before I left town, once in the Cantina.  Not a great way to welcome people to the game.

Looks like they let the same gorilla type the SWG manual that typed the EQ one.  I am trying to add skills to my Toolbar.  I look up toolbar and it explains the toolbar lets you access skills and commands.  Great, how?  My Twi'Lek has Wound Healing (Dancing) and I wanted to add it to my toolbar.

Can I lock the camera behind the character ala EQ, AO, AC and every other MMOG I have played?  I hate having to use 2 hands to run around.  I should be able to steer with arrows and have camera always looking ahead.

My mouse does not have a wheel.  It is an IBM mouse with a nub on top, push to scroll up, pull to scroll back, can scroll left or right as well.  Most times I like it better, but SWG does not consider it a wheel.  Any way to get into 1st person without it?

Thanks!

Hmm, not sure about the first person mode, but to lock the camera you want to hit del/period on the number pad. Try the + and - on the number pad to get into first person mode too.

As far as getting skills on the toolbar, hit ctrl + a this will bring up the macro screen (that's what I call it, not sure what the real name is) You can find all the commands in there that you can drag and drop on to your tool bar... In case you don't know, you can resize your tool bar too making it 2 rows. You put the mouse on the bottom part of the tool bar and it will change to like a windows resizing cursor, then pull down. You access the top row by hitting the function keys (F1-F12) and the bottom row by hitting shift + function keys.

Yeah I hate that they make people start there on Tatooine now, used to be you could start on any of the starting planets (Tat, Naboo, Corellia, Talus, Rori), I liked that a lot better.

    Thanks for the help!

I locked the camera, but it still will not turn with arrow keys.  When I use mouse it turns character now, an improvement.

I did get to 1st person, but using arrow keys only makes me walk in the direciton, camera stays put.  How the heck is it 1st person if my character is looking south and moving south but I am seeing north?

I have chase camera on now.  I can steer with mouse now, but not arrows which is what I really want.  It may seem like a little thing, but its the little things that count.

A stupid R2 helper unit keeps climbing up my butt (really, I can post screen shots of him sticking out of my butt).  Can I make him go away, sell him for scrap, something?  And why is he allowed in the Cantina?

Those desert demons are pissing me off.  I am trying to read tutorials and change settings and keep getting killed.  I was killed in the Cantina!  As I typed this I was killed again by 2 more desert demons and I have never left town or started a fight.

I really do want to like this game, I do, I do, I do.

Click on R2 and goto Droid Options then Store. You're better off using the right mouse button to run and keep your left hand free for F1-F12 for your attacks, stim packs, etc. Type Control-H for help, that's what it's there for. There's this other thing called a manual. Yes, it came with the game! Read it.

Thanks, R2 is no longer trying to be my "jail cell buddy".

I did look in the manual and it was not able to answer my questions.

Below is a copy of the ENTIRE Toolbar section of the manual.  As I already said, it says nothing about how to add to it.

    <paste>

The toolbar is meant to be an easy method for performing virtually any action quickly and efficiently. Each box on the toolbar corresponds to one of your Function keys (F1- F12 ). You can click on virtually any icon, action, or piece of equipment; and then drag it into the toolbar to assign it to a Function key. Cycle between toolbar banks using the toolbar arrows or the CTRL+ ` keys.

You have access to 6 toolbars (numbered 0- 5). You can drag the edges of the toolbar pane to expand the toolbar to two rows. The second row can be utilized by hitting the SHIFT key and the corresponding Function key.

No reason to be rude, the manual is old and doesn't explain everything.

The best advise I could give you is go to the starport and head to either Coronet on the planet Corellia or Theed on the planet Naboo. Coronet always has a lot of people, but this can cause some lag. Theed has some people a lot less lag and you never have to wait for the shuttle in the Starport. These cities don't have the desert guys that agro on sight.

If you tell me what server you're on and your character name I might be able to help you out. I'm on Naritus and my character name is Jak'Obi. You can send a tell between servers by typing: /tell Naritus.Jak'Obi [message] Notice the capital N on Naritus that's important. In game emails can do the same thing.

As far as the controls, I believe there is a way to make the mappings just like Everquest. If you hit Ctrl O and go to controls, but I would recomend using the mouse so you can use your left hand for the function keys. Ctrl + Tab scrolls through the 6 toolbars backwards. So if you were on toolbar 1 and wanted to go to 6, just hit ctrl tab once, instead of ctrl + ~(tilda) 5 times.

     Techpriest,

I feel for you about SONY now making new players automatically start out on Tantooine. Out of all the starting planets (back when there were other starting planets) Tantooine was the hardest of all. I think you should go to the starport and take a ship to Coronet, Corellia. Corellia is/was the best planet for new players to start out on. Many cities are close together so the wilderness is not soo rough on new players. You might have to make more than 1 jump. Other better planets for a new player are Talus, and Tralus.... which are in the Corellia star system.

Naboo is another nice planet for new players to start out on. IMHO after Corellia, Naboo is/was the next best one. You can take a shuttle to Theed, Naboo. Just do not go too deep into the wilderness, there are some HUGE giant monsters out there heheh. As long as the city is still in sight, you will be ok and not die easily.
