Character names are better in SWG than any other MMORPG

StellosStellos Member UncommonPosts: 1,491

I noticed one thing while playing SWG regarding names.  The majority of characters have good names that one could imagine in the SW universe.  I've never been big into the RP servers of MMOs, but I'm starting to get sick and tired of all the foolish names I see from MMOs.  I am currently playing WAR and I'm really enjoying it, however, I have noticed an excessive amount of foolish names.  Names that don't even come close to fitting any lore that has ever existed in any game anywhere.  You see names like"Bigmac" "Slaphappy" "Killbill" "iamnotatank" "Timmythetooth"...and it goes on and on.  I love WAR but the names are rediculous, I don't think it says much about the community sometimes when you see those silly names.  However, I always noticed that SWG didn't have this problem as much as other MMORPGs.  Any suggestions as to why this is?  Have you noticed this too?

I haven't played for a good 2-3 years now but back when i spent 3 years in the game i did notice the decency in names, some might not have been accurate to lore but they were still viable and realistic names, no leet rubbish or immature names..  personally i think this is because it was a much more mature game, the community was very understanding and a total stranger would have been happy to help new players. I'm not saying it didn't have it's rotten apples but these were extremely rare and usually stayed in the PvP areas (Guild i was in enjoyed a weekly run to PvP zones just to wipe em out numerous times).

I'm afraid that if you weren't around prior to the CU, you missed a lot of seriously asshat player names.  Most of those players have gone on to inflict their non-immersive names on other MMOs.  We had some people with seriously non-lore sorts of names, especially, unfortunately, on Jedi avatars.

Those who stuck around are likely to be much more into SWG for the Star Wars, not the gaming.  Which might explain why there seem to be more avatars running around with appropriate names.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

The first SWG toon I rolled had a name by the random name generator used at creation.  I have since used and will continue to use that name in other MMOs.  It actually fits any genre.

No real point here. Just chiming in for the sake of it.

Heh, well a lot of us are StarWars nerds from the 70's lol.  Picking the right name for our first online StarWars experience was important :P

Obraik is also a randomly generated name that I liked the sound of :)

    lol no kidding!

I remember going to the drive-in and lying down in the back of my mom's station wagon to watch SW! I can also remember sneaking into the drive-in to see Close Encounters, The Shining, Excalibur, Fort Apache-The Bronx, and many others.. it was good to be a kid in the 70's!

When I choose a name for any MMO I like to choose a name with astrological relevence - but spelled backwards such as Suvroc. It kind of has a spacey theme, so fits well with SWG IMO.

But since I wouldn't consider myself a RP'er I love to see names with some kind of witty humor. I think the funniest name I've ever seen was in SWG. Lactose The'Intolerant made me laugh like no other :D

Some of the names that I have seen is SWG: Beef Stroganoff, BadBrains, HeWhoPassesWind, PleaseDon't HurtMe, DancesWithSaladRunsWithCrutons, CheeseEating SurrenderMonkey, GoldFarmer, PMSAvenger.

I saw a few names in SWG that were everybit as fooolish as in any mmo.Take Hairymofo for a wookie for instance. Names do not bother me much in a mmo,a little humor goes a long way in my book. Some folks can be creative and thats a good thing.

    Exactly how I feel too!

One of my favorite memories was when my home server Lowca went down a few of us created new toons on another server. After choosing entertainers we decided to create the Jackson 5. It was a blast, and we had many people come and hang out with us just for a laugh.

I also had a toon that I would log in once in a while named A'Commoner just to wander wround Theed.

And lastly  I never had the chance but I a;ways wanted to create a Wookie doctor named Zaius.   :)

I played through most of the various iterations of SWG, and there were always a fair amount of  incredibly stupid names out there. I really don't think that it was ever any particularly better than any other MMO.

I have noticed that it is often (although certainly not always) PvP players who have the more ridiculous names, so I would suppose that higher concentrations of PvP players might well lead to higher concentrations of silly names.

    Just a theory, though.

SWG used to have a very strict naming policy.  CSR's were all over that stuff in the beginning of the game, when they actually cared about the community.  Now that SOE is practically begging for subscribers they no longer care what the toon names are.  SWG also did something that no one else really did until WAR was released.  Added a little button for a random name generator.  So, you could basically tell the passive agressive grievers from those that are/were lacking in the creativity department :)

I used to be pretty anal-retentive about who I'd talk to based on their name - if it was an asshat name, I wouldn't even talk to them.  That said, I never laughed out loud in real life at a person's name until I saw Admiral Snackbar on the Intrepid server.

I started a thread on asshat Jedi names on the Ahazi forum.

Boy, were there lots of them.

My personal least favorite: Lil' Flip GAME-OVER

Some funny asshat names I recall on Bloodfin: Hemp Highwalker; Special Ed; Large Marge (yes, a very fat ugly female toon); Undercover Brother (fat black toon w/ a fro); etc. Most of these were spelled in odd ways to bypass the filters.

Most of us did have "serious" RPG names. But it was such a great community (very special) that the goofy names never botherd me.

    LMAO! That is legendary.

Joking aside, asshat naming conventions annoy the hell out of me in any MMORPG. It smacks of laziness, selfish disregard for realism, immaturity, and in the case of names such as 'Iamawarrior' an extreme lack of creativity.

SWG had a naming filter that was constantly being dodged around using apostrophes and other characters to get around.

There were so many damn Revan' types running around trying to use canon/EU names.

The thing about "Sio Babble" is that while it's based on SIo Bibble, the governor of Naboo, it wasn't in the naming filter at all.  Not sexy enough, I guess!  I had a RP story behind the name, too.
