Excuse my ignorance, but what is it that BioWare has done to earn such high praise, and also, what is this state of the art engine that i've read they are developing this new mysterious MMO on?
-Isaiah
I can honestly say that Bioware is probably one of the best video game developing companies out on the market. They've released hundreds of top-selling games and have nothing but praise from critics to show.
The 21st is going to be a good day for me, it's the release of Fable 2 and the announcement of, hopefully, a KOTOR MMO. I'm quite excited.
They've released what? Hundreds of top-selling games? Arent you a bit exaggarating?
Bioware was a good company between years 98-2001 when they released their series of D&D rpg's on infinite engine. After that they are going downhill. KOTOR 1 was nothing more than an interactive hack'n slash movie, NWN was the same except it wasn't even a movie, and mass effect was just kotor 1 on steroids. As far as I know kotor 2 and nwn 2 were done by Obsidian Entertainment and not Bioware. So where the hell is all the kotor mmo hype coming from? Viral marketing or rabid fanboys?

I thought it was kinda obvious that I was exaggerating over the top. Like you said, ask yourself, "hundreds of top-selling games". I don't think anyone has honestly done that.
But yeah, for the most part I think they're a good company. They have released a bunch of great video games if you ask me personally. KOTOR I and II are arguably (note ARGUABLY, I certainly don't think so but alot of people do) one of the best RPGs that have come out for the consoles. Mass Effect was a very good game. Not too sure of nwn's, I'm afraid, as I've never played the first or second one (though I was tempted to get the second one).
And yes, viral marketting will be helping alot with anything Bioware releases. I used to call them the masters of marketting until Funcom came along and was able to sell almost a million copies of AoC and still stay afloat. Now with LA... I can imagine we'll be seeing alot of marketting on their parts. Hell, you even have to keep in mind that this is Star Wars as well. You must know as much as I do and almost anyone else here how much a new SWs MMO is going to be hyped by rabid SWs fans. The SWs franchise is probably most famous for the massive amounts of followers the franchise has aquired.
Yup, one more day until we know for sure that this will be WoWKotorO.
And for those people who don't think there will be Jedi everywhere, I suggest you play the original KotoR or KotoR 2, there are Jedi's EVERYWHERE in this time period.
If the game is based on KotorO, there will be Jedi. Lets face it, there will be Jedi no matter what period it is set in. That is going to be one of the biggest selling points of the game.

I dont mind jedi being the focus of the game, I just HOPE they make you BECOME a jedi over time as opposed to just creating one from the login screen.
Everyone should start out the same, an untalented species of you choice (human, wookie, zabrak, ect) then through your CHOICES during gameplay you could become any number of things like a soldier, a business man, a monk, whatever.... and if you put alot of time and effort in then MAYBE you can unlock jedi.
Tomorrow at 2 PM , I will have split of Champange , with fine selection of cheese and crackers laid out to toast the begin of the end of the NGE.
It would be great for SOE to announce the end of the NGE - first thing they have to do is remove all retail copies from stores shelves (Done over a year ago). Next is that they have to do to the title is announce no plans for expansions ( Done - none since the NGE 3 years ago and lets not mention all the refunds for the Trails of Obi-Wan and BTW the City of theSskies with the 13 year old overvoiced with bad music balance is a fanboi gone wild) and lastly make lame attempts to keep the last 20k players like the Hoth instance addition. (Done - or is it?)
I would love to do the promised Eulogy for the NGE as this years Hoilday gift to the Vets.

What wrong with Jedi/Sith.
What do you mean the Star Wars movie were not about BH and Smugglers? oh no!
I know it hard to believe but the Star Wars Story is about Jedi and Sith. In fact if you go by the orginal movie it about one Jedi and his family and how he fell and was saved by his son. (who was a JEDI)...
If you look at the history and its a rich history in both Cannon and EU. It all about the conflict between the Light and the Dark side of the force.
Yes, my friend BH, Smuggler and other profession in the Star Wars unviverse support the main character which are the jedi/Sith... No it can't be,,,
Yes, I do expect Jedi and Sith to run around this MMO. What is Star Wars without them? The old Republic setting make the game more believeable as you do have many Jedi and Sith in this era.
I expect the MMO to follow alot the way KoTOR started. You start as a Force Sensitive and it up to you if you decided to follow the Jedi or Sith teaching. Or if you choose you can stay away from the force training and become a very force align Bounty Hunter, Smuggler or Solider whatever none force profession Bioware includes.
You say balance in PVP Jedi don't have to be elite for the game to be successful. I can see a force align Bounty Hunter or Smuggler as a even match for a Jedi/Sith knight. Not all Jedi/Sith knights were Anakin, Yoda, Mace or Obi these were the elite of the class...
We saw many Jedi Knight and Jedi Master go down in the Arena battle in Clone Wars...I think a Jedi master was kill by Fett in that same fight at the balcony....
I m no fan of WOW. I tried it in beta and knew it wasn't for me. You can't over look that it the must successfull MMO out there. Number don't lie and are hard to over look. You would be dumb if you don't look at it and find what make it so damn successfull...
If it isn't a Star Wars MMO, that'll be the end of my MMO days but if it is then I'll definitely look into it even if it's WoW-vanilla gameplay. There's hardly any good MMOs anymore that's worth playing or keeps me in for long, City of Heroes is great but the upcoming pvp changes (suppressed movement after being attacked) looks like it'll kill pvp more than attract more, and you can only do so much in pve.

I don't care if the game will be littered with Jedi/Sith, Jedi Knight series were fun with all Jedi, and KOTOR 1 & 2 were fun "working" your way up to being a Jedi (which I think what the next SW MMO should have).
When I first got SWG, I didn't care about Jedi, I didn't even care if it had nothing from what the movies did (it did have some contents of it), the skill system, social community with hangout locations and sandbox were very attractive and I even knew people that didn't even know anything about Star Wars (yes they exist) and still loved the game. This is exactly what the MMO industry is straying away from, most especially the social community, what new MMO game has that?
As many of you already know, the BioWare-LucasArts announcement is supposed to be happening next week (October 21st). Well, packed Holiday Issue of PC Gamer Magazine is going to have the exclusive first preview of the game.

No he's saying the hero engine is being used on a fantasy based mmo and the LA project is something completely seperate. It's still possible, seeing as there's nothing officially linking the mmo and the LA project as yet, I have a feeling that might change tomorrow though

Lucas wipes his ass with $100,000. Trust me, considering the Dev Cycle has been estimated at over $100 million to date, I don't think they would get choked up over 100K. If they scraped it, don't worry...because they aren't.

It is POSSIBLE, but I REALLY hope that's not the case. I'd love to see a KOTOR MMO, I think it's a universe that really lends itself to a fun experience, provided it's not too Jedi-centric.
So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. For some weird reason I think you are right. I remember a couple years ago Bioware made a statement that they were making an MMO that is fantasy and a totally new IP. I think the new SW game will be an RPG and we will see a new IP from Bioware that will be an MMORPG. Both stated by Bioware, and I have had no luck finding the quote.

That was a smoke-screen for the benifit of SWG. Many thought that if people knew a NEW Star Wars game was coming, that no one would try to stick it out with SOE.
October 21st is a day Im greatly looking forward too. And in case you missed it, Bioware, EA, and LucasArts are jointly making the announcement we've all been waiting for....what the heck theyve been developing since December 2005. http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/lucasarts-bioware-unveiling-new-game-oct-21/ Of course we already know its a Star Wars themed MMO based on EA leaking the news.... http://www.massively.com/2008/07/17/kotor-mmo-confirmed-by-electronic-arts/ And of course there were rumors, mostly from inside sources such as mine that already knew a star wars themed MMO was in the works. My dumpster diving proved definitely that something with a star wars theme was in the works despite all the denials. http://www.rlmmo.com/viewtopic.php?t=5582 So what does this new Star Wars MMO mean for Galaxies ? My opinion, it means the end of the line for the trainwreck that was Star Wars Galaxies. Clearly the NGE was an experiment. SOE stated as such when it announced DC MMO which would have a similiar game style that the NGE has. Im betting the NGE was a way to work out the kinks and issues for the DC MMO. Galaxies was failing anyway (thanks to a CU that the players did NOT want), why not take a radical shot to get new players and if that doesnt work at least they have a means to work on things to implement in other MMO's. There is proof this experiment was the case...many of the swg developers have moved on to work on the DC mmo project. Their NGE experience will prove to be invaluable. Why wouldnt SOE roll back to classic servers ? Simple, they were getting to beta test new code for another MMO. Reflecting on the NGE, it was a brilliant financial move by Smedley. He in essence got thousands of players to pay to beta test a new game. Current subscribers are likely paying for development and testing of the DC MMO. And we know from the past that SOE has no issues violating the cardinal rule of MMO's by using subscription fees to develop new games (nge). Course this makes Smedley's apology for the nge just another lie. He didnt learn any lessons honestly. This is just business as usual for SOE. Bioware and LA were ready and waiting to see the results of the NGE. And it only took LA 3-4 weeks to decide that Galaxies was done. The NGE went live in Nov 2005, the hiring of developers for the new Austin studio (Bioware) started in December. LA had seen enough. Obviously the new Star Wars MMO was born from the failure of Galaxies. So is there any chance that LA will allow Galaxies to exist once the new MMO launches ? I think not. LA has shown its intentions from Dec 2005 on about SWG's fate. There would be only one good reason to keep a new star wars MMO secret and that would be to save any revenue still being made by Galaxies. Sure some players will remain in SWG till the bitter end but there are many more who cling to the life raft of classic servers or another revamp. Such an announcement would mean all hope would be lost. This isnt some new tactic by SOE either. Lets not forget how SOE repeatedly told players about a new force ranking system or the capitol ships coming. Behind the scenes SOE knew these would never materialise as the NGE was in the works. SOE had no moral or ethical issue with lying to keep thousands of players subscribing. I look forward to the 21st not only to see some screenshots (hopefully) of the new Star Wars MMO but also because I believe it spells the end for Galaxies. Star Wars Galaxies ultimately was the greatest MMO Ive ever played but its mere existence now hurts the industry. SOE violated the cardinal rule of MMO's by taking subscription money and using it to make an entirely new game. It should shut down. Do we have any proof besides speculation at this point for a shutdown ? I believe we do. SOE doesnt give stuff away, yet in 2009 they will allow free character transfers. What would motivate them to allow this ? And why 2009 ? Anyway Im counting down the days
I used to be a Sony Consopiracy Theorist too, and it's quite easy to manipulate the things that happened into any number of G-Man Horror stories. ...But then I realised that was all BS.
I don't think Sony would be so stupid to completely change a Live game to Beta test gameplay of another game, whose IP they also bought. Doing this would be sort of like... I dunno... illegal. They would piss off everyone. And quite frankly, i don't know how in the world any sane developer would knowingly do this. Developer's aren't money motivated. Sure, they want their game to do well, but... I just don't see this theory being true on any level.
At any rate... tomorrow can't come soon enough. Oh, and for the record, the NGE happened before Bioware and Lucasarts announced a new MMO project... which was before EA bought out Bioware - which for the life of me, I can't figure out why this happened. I surely did not see Bioware hurting so much that they needed a third wheel. I mean, they consistantly made successful, marketable games.

This is exactly what the MMO industry is straying away from, most especially the social community, what new MMO game has that?
I am going on the record. I think The Old Republic will be a RPG and not an MMO. Biowares MMORPG will be a fantasy based game.

It's going to be the front page story of the next issue. I'm excited.
Tomorrow will start another great week for gaming. Fallout 3, Fable 2, and the announcement of the game that I've been waiting for since 2006.
As many of you already know, the BioWare-LucasArts announcement is supposed to be happening next week (October 21st). Well, packed Holiday Issue of PC Gamer Magazine is going to have the exclusive first preview of the game.
They confirmed this on their last podcast.

That is going to be one of the biggest selling points of the game.

agreed. it's going to be glowbat online. pass.

No he's saying the hero engine is being used on a fantasy based mmo and the LA project is something completely seperate. It's still possible, seeing as there's nothing officially linking the mmo and the LA project as yet, I have a feeling that might change tomorrow though
...The spread of secondary and latterly of tertiary education has created a large population of people, often with well developed literary and scholarly tastes, who have been educated far beyond their capacity to undertake analytical thought.

I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.
Just for the record though, I hope I'm wrong.

That was a smoke-screen for the benifit of SWG. Many thought that if people knew a NEW Star Wars game was coming, that no one would try to stick it out with SOE.
Turns out it didn't matter...SWG is DEAD.
