You know , i have been reading all this with my cousin here, who is trying to figure out is this game for him or not. I am trying to stay neutral (didn't like the game but that was awhile ago), since i have no input if anything changed for good or worse(didn't play in months), but all this extreme pro and against is just making things way more unclear. While i can point out some bigger proponents and opponents of this game, and tell him to disregard those (just to have neutral view), it is impossible to make any reasonable assumption if game improved or not. Everything boils down to extreme "I love.." and "I hate .." without any solid facts or hard data. Not to mention that Funcom doesn't help with being so "secretive" about almost everything (server populations, lags spikes, etc..) Can someone please give some reasonably moderate view of game's current state with certain facts?Or point him on one already posted? Major proponents and opponents, as well Funcom representatives please don't reply. Thanks P.S. even i am not trying to give him my opinion , i did suggest him not to pay for trial , because that's something that is completely unethical imho.
As far as improvements go, there have been some. Stability problems and memory leaks have mostly been resolved. The game has less holes in the content now as well, with more coming fairly soon (a new 55+ zone is on test live at the moment). I must add, lag spikes are still reported, though not from everyone. PVP has some form of purpose now (levels, armors etc..), if that's what you or he seek. Look for the thread about update 3.0, for more in depth information about the changes coming. Crafting is also getting a much needed overhaul.
There are still problems to work out (pretty much common knowledge now) so I won't bore you with to many details. However, if the game had released in the shape it is in today, things would be a lot different right now. They'd still have PR issues, but not near as severely IMO. The game is still AOC, so if instancing, the combat or the linearity bothered you before, nothing has changed there.
An issue that needs addressing you asked about is population. There are a few servers with decent activity, not very many though. A few PVP servers, a few PVE and an Rp server. That information would be easier to find after subscribing (if he makes that decision) by testing the waters a little or on server specific forums.
My personal feeling is the game is fun, but only if you have a decent amount of tolerance to over look much of what's missing. I'm not saying there's nothing to do while working your way to max level, there's quite a bit actually. There's still a large amount of things that are supposed to be there that simply aren't.
Personally I'm waiting to return (last played in late september, after 2.0), for both merges and a more polished level 80 environment.
I tried to present as many facts as possible without writting a book on the subject. There's much more that could be said, however I'll leave that up to the next guy who responds.
Edit- I forgot to add, if you have the discs you can lend them to your cousin with a buddy key and he wouldn't be charged.
Thank you for fair presentation of your view.Reason why i needed someone else to share oppinion is that we have different taste, he likes WoW and i don't for example.
I will give him my disc(he is visiting me here), since i really don't have anymore desire for MMO's.I think 9 years was enough for me.
Three times now you've thrown out 90% like it's a fact. I would like to see how you arrived at this statistic. I mean, a guy with a failcom icon wouldn't just pull a number out of his butt, would he?
Using different scientific methods, I estimate AoC has about 50-75k active subs left. I believe it was 750k at some point? That would make it about 90%.
Such as?
You are playing a video game. By definition that means you are not hardcore.

Good question? I think there would be a long line of people interested in that method
I didnt read all the posts in this thread, but here my 2 cent.
I play MMO since 2001 and I've tryed every popular ones and I have a lot of capped toon in each of them (DAoC, SWG, CoH, WoW, GW, EQ2, Vanguard, AOC, WAR etc)
I'm currently playing AOC since the launch and I REALLY like it. I know the game isnt perfect but remember that the game has only some months and has a LOT of potentiel.
The community is awesome compare to some others MMO...A lot more mature.
I play PR PVP on Cimmeria and the peeps are really helpful.
One thing that I've noticed is the "no time consuming" game. I mean AOC took some ideas from some MMO's, by exemple; the respawn area when you died, the quests helper etc
Anyway the game is still moving and the extension's coming in 2009.
I'm really happy to see what Funcom made in the MMO community, an awesome game with a lot of potential.
This game has no link with the others MMO in the market, this game is unique.
Sorry for my english cause isnt my native language.
Hi m8 ! (OP) Yes i recommend you to buy AOC and try it and see if you like it or not, dont listen to people that say AOC sucks bla bla bla, they only talk shit ! Try it for your self and then decide if you like it or not, i play it with 4 irl friends and we all LOVE AOC it is a really cool and fun game ! Sure the first 2 months it had alot of problems but now they are pretty much gone, and AOC is really fun to play !
If AoC is a great game why dont they have a free trial? Interesting question that demands an answer.
AOC needs 3 more months minimum before you should buy it. So much more you could spend your money on instead. Really AOC is an ok game, but a horrible value. In its current form it feels like a good looking single player game with very shallow depth in some areas. You spend dozens of levels hoping to get to the 1 level that gives you something really intested to do. You run hundreds of quests. Well its just not worth it right now. Give it a few more months for them to put all the stuff into it that is supposed to be there. LB
You are as always wildly off target and doing Quests is by the way considdered to be fun. And hundreds and thousands of them is associated with something good??
Just got the game like a week ago. Love it. be prepared for a extraordinary MMO experience.
Yes, it's very promising the first 1-2 weeks. Just give it time, you will get bored and learn to hate it, just like 90% of other players out there.
I havnt seen anything that will bring me back until the expansion and that is what a year away? AOC is such a dissapointment, a classic rushed to market before finished mmo. They went the way of SWG, and died faster than SWG which is a record in itself. It took 2 years to kill that game, it only took Funcom 2 months.

Died?? What?? I play this game bigtime with a very healthy server full of people. I think you need to calibrate your stements a bit.

Even if one server would be full of people 24/7, that doesn't mena anything if all the other servers are DEAD. It might seem to you like "people are coming back to AoC" when in reality they are just rerolling because their own server is empty. I don't understand how someone can say with a straight face that FC hasn't been a big failure.
Considering how much time and money it cost to make AoC, I think its a fair assumption to say it is the biggest mmo failure in history.
If you have the hardware...this is the MMO to play.
I was in the initial wave of players and played for about a month then canceled for various reasons, primarily because I didn't have the hardware to run it very well. I have had my hand at WoW, Lineage 2, and Warhammer but this game keeps me logging on and having a ton of fun.
Its definitely worth a second try and they have balanced out all the classes as well as the gameplay.

I wouldn't say that yet.
First of all the game might still catch up.
Secondly the graphics engine is really good and Funcom might license it out, they will use it in their next game also. Unreal made a lot more cash on their engine than the game.
It will take a few years before we really see if it is the biggest fail. Also, the biggest fail in MMO history is Sims online no matter how you count.

Like the fanboios all say, give it time!!!! It will prove to be the biggest MMO failure ever... It will go down in history as the "what not to do' of the mmo world.
Some people are like slinkies, they dont really have a purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

No need to say that. I give the game 10/10 in a blink right now. What need is there to wait when the game already is great? Log in have fun!!

Listen to Malickie's last post, it was fair and honest.
