A tanks life, a real tank that is specced for it

My playing time in WAR is usually the same things I have noticed. A normal playing would look something like this.

A TANKS LIFE

* Log in

* Getting tell about tanking for something somewhere.

* Check the auction house, get some pots, some craft mats, maybe some gear for an alt. (AH addict i am!)

* Getting tell about tanking for something somewhere.

* Write a juicy ingame mail to my wife. Getting 2-3 tells while figuring out juicy stuff to write to my lovely wife with her UBER heals. (Double reason to mail her ingame, for the heals and for the loving!)

* Getting tell about tanking for something somewhere.

* Duoing with the wife, do some quests, explore. Kindly answer tells that I will tank for them in a while, duoing with wife atm.

* Do a PQ or two with the wife, get shafted at rolls of course, as a tank my dps is very low and my healing lower. Wife usually keeps us up a bit in the list tho due to her great skills in healing everything, (she would heal the mob i was killing if she could, she would!)

* Whine some to the wife that tanks get shafted.

* Enter a scenario or two, protect healers, be the guy who takes the beating to save the rest of the people. Get thank you tells for saving

squishies and defending them who need it. Get shafted when scoreboard comes up.

* Be so annoyed with the PQs and Scenarios as tank that I whine some more to my wife who says the usual. "Lets go with some group so you can tank something honey".

* Accept one of all the tells to tank something, do my thing and keep the mobs on me and save the aggro nubs that wont listen. Even tho I let them die a couple of times if they dont listen. Get whined on for beeing a bad tank when they die. (makes me snicker). Then they whine on wife for not healing, they usually flip out when i inform them that i told them 4-5 times to listen to what i say, and they died because they did not. Add them to ignore and no group list after they do some harassment tells. All good, filters out the bad eggs so you know not to group with them.

* End the day with getting shafted in in some scenario or PQ due to my tanking spec, taking damage for your team and saving squishies dont count for much sadly.

* Going to bed whining to wife about the poor state of tanks. Wife cures it with her magic touch and *censored*

* Wake up next day, and do the same thing again! I will never learn!

(I get quite a lot of tells because I usually am a pretty friendly guy, but mostly because I am a tank and that is what I do, and people usually dont say no to a tank/healer combo that knows what they are doing. Great rep with community helps, but my friends list is way too big atm!)

A bit ironic this post is, I like the game, having fun usually, but my tank is starting to collect dust. Not fun to play as it is now, I want my contribution to be valued as much as the lil kid who spams his dps on everything and dont see all the times he get saved by some tank who steps in to protect him and then have the nerves to bitch and moan on you if they actually die.

Cmon Mythic, give this old craynky tanky a spanky of joy by boosting our contribution in PQs and Scenarios to actually be worth a bit more. I would like to see all those dps tank that hero themselves.

Thank you!

Kerebo

true tanks have issues ingame atm, that i agree on fully.

maybe adding some more info on scoreboards, how much dmg people taken, how much people taken for others or something :) That would make the BW kiddies rethink hehe

    There can be only one

    made me LOL

hang in there buddy, they will sort it out, or they wont have tanks left. And without them, there is a lot of content lost.

Yhea, hopefully they will attend this issue soon. :)

Wish more ppl would vote on my poll! :)

I play an Ironbreaker that is pure tank specc and I usually don't have a problem doing well in PQs. However, I know for a fact that other tanks like Swordmasters don't have a damn problem the PQ/Keep scoreboards.

I was in a small PQ warband a few nights ago and after doing 4 PQs I had noticed that each time the top three contributions were always Swordmasters (this doesn't mean they won all of the loot though).

They were all DPS specced Swordmasters by the way.

    STOP WHINING!

im tank spec so the thread should be about tank specced chars. They not really tanks if they specced differently now when I think about it :)

  • TheSheikhTheSheikh Member Posts: 804

First of all, it does apply since Damage and Damage Taken are both factored into the scoreboards.

When you have a Damage specced tank who runs in and does both good damage and offtanks he will naturally get a higher score than a pure tank spec who runs in to focus on defense and tanking with minimal focus on the damage he is causing. This gives DPS specced tanks the ability to rank higher in contribution. Thus backing up the idea that damage taken should contribute more to your overall score than it does now.

Secondly, sorry for contributing to the thread and poll.

    STOP WHINING!

I'm a 37 SM and i have honestly never experience anything you have written there.  Except for the PQ thing.  I've gotten dead last a number of times on the contribution board but i've also somehow made #1 quite a few times as well.  I have so many god damn pots in my inventory I'm getting sick of it since i never use em.

I'll show this to teh wife when I get home, she's the tank, I'm the healer, I think she'll agree with it.. cept for writing letters part.  She never does that.

One of my friends is a "real tank" whereas I am a healer, so this is coming from my observational experience.

He plays an Ironbreaker and up to T3 he has had no problems getting high on the Renown scores in scenarios (the only score that matters...) and almost 95% of the time in the top 3 in PQ contributions, with myself hovering either right above or right below him.

He is specced for Defense, which is the Ironbreaker tanking tree. His DPS is low, but his contribution is always high, since he's constantly hitting everything around him to maintain aggro of multple mobs. This increases contribution by a lot, similar to the idea that healing a lot of different people increases additional contribution for each mob those people are fighting.

I think it all depends on the tank and the healer backing them up. If the tank can maintain aggro, do as much DPS as possible given their restrictions, as well as keep their party alive, their contribution can sky rocket.

Sure, you wont get high on the DPS score charts (except in some cases, of course), but your renown should be high if you're doing the job you should be doing.

Anyways, these are just some observations. My experience playing a tank is only up to level 6, but my observations healing a tank and how his contribution scores are added are hopefully helpful. I'm interested in seeing some more replies here though. Tanks are what keeps me healing! :P

just curious, how do you get the aggro from other players?

  • miagisanmiagisan Member Posts: 5,156

use the taunt abilities...they take agro away from another target. My level 22 tank specd chosen has 2, a single taunt and an AoE taunt

when you have agro on a mob, you will see a ! in yellow pop up on the mob your fighting.

there are a lot of skills in a tanks aresnal that can do this, both single target and aoe target.

the thing is that only the tanks have such skills.  If your not a tank you have to out damage the other players in order to draw agro, often a big mistake on a low defense DD class.

sorry was unclear in my last post, ment: "How do you get aggro on players?" Was a guy talking about him taking aggro in scenarios on players, and wondered how he managed that.

Aggro on mob is easy, sorry for my bad english, my fourth language :(

Not sure about other races, but for my Chosen taunts in PvP cause me to do increase damage by x% until you hit me Y times.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

very hard to get intelligent players to focus their damage on you in PvP as a tank specced tank. They understand quite fast that you are a tough package with lil dps and usually take easier targets out instead. But find myself the target of CC, roots and the like quite often, understandable tho.

The life of a tank, getting tells:

Tank the mob plz - Answer: No, I was planning on tanking our own healer and let the mob run wild

Hold aggro! - Answer: Really, you mean that?

Dont lose aggro! - Answer: No problem, as i am not used to aggro I usually scream and run away in random direction when I get aggro so the mob resets, much like all the dps kiddies.

Dont die! - Answer: Yhea, that is kind of my goal, but my healing is a bit low so sorry if i die.

I am across the world from you, can you come tank this PQ boss, hurry, 2 mins left on timer! - Answer: Beam me up Scotty!

(while tanking a very hard hitting boss)

Take off your shield, you do more dps then - Answer: Ill take of my gear also, makes me swing faster with all the heavy plate gone.

    and the best one!

"Why did you die you nub f--k???!!" - Answer: ???? (What you say to something like this?)

I haven't tried any of the tanks in game since I play a DoK but don't tanks get renown for taking damage?

If not mythic needs to change that.

I should roll one just to try it out I was saving my first tank slot for a Blackguard.

    Playing: Nothing

    Looking forward to: Nothing

Real tanks stack offensive stats as well. If you're a Swordmaster, or an Ironbreaker, then you should never be too far down on the SC scoreboard under damage done.

The only way I could understand your plight is if you're playing a black orc, which is arguably the weakest tank in terms of dps, but the strongest in terms of survivability, but you rolled it so c'est la vie.

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

For me as an ironbreaker, if the group is succesful i tend to think i've done a good job. I don't always get a look in when it comes to the loot, but the group won and that's what tanking is really about.

PS my girlfriend does the healing and if she wins something, then i consider that a win for the the tank as well.

REal tanks can guard a healer and wade into the thick of battle like a god amongst mere mortals.

Had we a force target taunt, we'd be the shit in this game...

As it stands right now, SM's can get bashed over the head pretty fast and they don't even waste their time with IB's.. They just run to bash the squishy they are protecting.. in FORCE...

Usually what happens is the IB uses his knockback, the squishy runs and they regroup, see another target and zerg them instead, however everyone is running back to spawn to get camped (in serpents of course)..

Tank, for right now, is almost a useless role in T4 "end game"... DPS owns so hard at rank 40 and it seems that all I have gotten as an SM is slightly better armor and if I shield spec, a knockdown (which is a MUST seeing as though ths game is so heavily CC based which KILLS the notion of tanking anyway)

They need to give my taunt the ability to make someone hit me, standing in the way doesnt always work as they still have bugs in their "clipping" feature, and sometimes standing in the way long enough just makes the defender "teleport" through you, due to lag.
