So it the more interesting and in high demand your product is, the less you're required to advertise?  Look how popular this game's become pre-release with little to no public advertising from this small greek indie company.  Kudos to them for weathering the storm throughout the years to bring us this.  This is what too many of us have been waiting for, and we're telling the masses.  Quality product = free advertising.

who would of thought that a game that everyone actually wants to play would advertise itself??

the old model of grind-crapstic game with high a advertising media blitz budget will still rule the day since it works so well on the sheep

  • andyjdandyjd Member Posts: 229

Or, it could be they have absolutly no money so have no choice....and the game might suck anyway...

If they game is good, it's good...but until people actually start playing it, that judgement can't be made.

  • SirspongySirspongy Member Posts: 66

Well Adventurine SA is not publishing the game themselves, unless Audiovisual SA (the Darkfall publisher) is a part of Adventurine SA (which I cannot find any proof of).

The publisher usually tells the developer how much they are willing to give the devloper for advertising. The more money they allot the developer for advertising the better return the publisher will see on their investment. I agree that so far it seems the advertising is lacking.

any game being made might suck...thats not the point

they have spent almost nothing in advertisment compared to other games yet has high anticipation.

I think the high anticipation is due to all the hype that the vaporware trolls were stirring up for such a long time. They thought they were doing the game a disservice but it seems the other way around now.

Darkfall is NOT as popular as you might think.  It's aimed at an old school market.. not the new kids on the block...  And as such.. it will NOT be as popular as games like AoC (when released), WAR, or .. most DEFINITLY WoW.  The market is not shaped for a FFA game.  The market is now designed as a theme park.. "jump in and play" game.  Darkfall is NOT that type of game (what MMORPG FFA game is?)

    Currently playing Real Life..

DF is catering to a completely untapped market. I agree it is a niche game, but the niche is much bigger than one might think...

250k subs would be a complete success for aventurine, they said it themselves... I belive that number is atainable and that it could be even higher.

I don't agree with that at all.  Anticipation for Darkfall is quite high considering the lack of advertising.  When the beta starts if the game is good it will get a lot higher.

It is not a game that only old school mmorpg gamers will play, they probably be a small minority.

An overwhelmingly large proportion of gamers haven't been able to experience a game like this as they either didn't have internet at home or were too young last time a new one was released.  These people haven't had the opportunity to play a modern fantasy sandbox game and a lot are looking for a different experience from themepark that this will offer.

Go look at the comments on the youtube video's, it is obvious that most of them are not from old school gamers and they are excited by what Darkfall is offering.

These people are only playing themepark games because at the moment there is not enough choice.

I don't really understand how you can say "the market is designed for themepark".  How can you design a market?? People will play whatever is released and in large numbers if they like it.  As more than one company releases games the market cannot be controlled.

You are telling the masses this is a quality product?  Who are you, Carnack the Magnificent?

We dont know if this is a quality product, and wont know until significant playtesting has been done.  We do know that telling folks you have the best sandbox/hardcore MMO will draw attention.  We know that 7 years of "almost ready for public beta" will draw free press coverage.  We dont know if Aventurine can walk their talk, at least not yet.

One thing that is unique - I cant think of any MMO that was 2.5 months from release where less was known about the actual state of the game.

Ah, but with a sandbox game we don't need to know much about it, just the basics. We are given the freedom to create the rest!

Alright, flippant comments aside, they are using a very, very, old method of advertising. It works like this:

    • Put a lot of effort into your Work
    • Take pride in what yOu make
    • Don't sell it if it is crap, staRt over instead
    • Let the quality of the proDuct speak for itself

This used to be all the advertising you could get. It has been in use since before the industrial revolution.

You don't know what their anti hack measures are.

You won't have items that you have worked on for a month, except maybe guild ships and losing those in a big sea battle will be epic.

You completely misunderstand the concept of the game.

I really don't think I can make the flippancy of the remark you addressed much clearer. Maybe you do not understand the word?

On hacking, why does FPS combat make games any more hackable? There are many FPS oriented games that use multiplayer of internet connections. How much difficulty do they have with hacking?

On loss, without that threat there is no true accomplishment to begin with. This will be something experienced on different levels depending how much you risk. Building a city is risking quite a lot in materials and time. However, you should not be able to build a permanent city that will never leave your control. Where is the fun in that. The fun is in the danger, the politics and the sieges themselves. All of these are shams if there is no city at risk and no city as a reward for a successful attack.

You just need to go into it with the attitude that you will lose it eventually, that nothing you do is permanent (besides killing epic spawns), and be prepared for the loss. If you have the right attitude about it, regrouping and starting a campaign of vengeance can be fun twist.

I am a skeptical supporter of DF. I am not a fanboi nor a troll. I seek the truth in every discussion, and I am truly sorry if I mistakenly state a fallacy.

What is this? Some new mantra you're going to throw out there hoping reality fades away? Word of mouth doesn't work on large scale media. If it did companies wouldn't bother to spend millions of dollars advertising. Thirty guys in a room in Greece are not going to outwit the entire business world.

But it helped to get you here , right ?! lol..

Word of  mouth is the best when it comes to create a really GOOD community.

Other advertise may get you larger community but not quality one. Just take MMORPG.com as example.

If I was a small developer, I'd rather have 100,000-250,000 old school gamers dedicated to "their game" like EVE has than sell 1,000,000 boxes at launch and six months later having everyone in the market believe I'm down to around 50,000 paying subscriber with even less actually playing.  Just my 2 cents.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

In all honesty I really think Adventurine are probably quite bemused at how much exposure Darkfall has had despite its lack of marketing. I don't think the viral marketing strategy was part of some big master plan at all. They either simply don't have the funds to embark on such a campaign or there is something more sinister at hand...

I'm sure  people I know who watched Dakrfall for years that I have gamed with and trust have better ethics than you. Because they give honest opinions and aren't swayed by stupidity such as "word of mouth is the best advertising."  You realize that's an advertising slogan made up on Wall Street  by an ad exec right?
