Im new in this line of games - online. But Im a vet in pen and paper role-playing, and PC RPGs. I would like to know what are the best online games for real role-playing out there. I dont like the D&D style of "kill, level-up, kill, level-up,...). Im more a Gurps or Vampire role-player, than a D&D one. Games this genre I like are: Fallout 1 n 2, Planescape Torment, Ultima 4 through 7, Darklands, Morrowind, etc.
So, can somebody indicate some good games this type?
Thx!

Everquest is a good game that has a lot of good role-players in it, although it takes a lot of grinding in the game to become good, and it's rather new-player unfreindly, since everyone is high level, I suggest playing on the newer servers if you decide to play. That or wait for the new mmorpg's that are coming out.

For online persistant Roleplaying with good graphics there is nothing better than NeverWinterNights.
It's got alot of the same atmosphere of the classic Muds, you can find persistant worlds that cater to absoutly anyone's taste, and it's free to play after you pay for the game + the 2 expansions. It's a peice of cake for anyone who wants to to easily add content to the game, so there's never any trouble finding something to do.
Good roleplay servers are Amn: A hero's tale and Myth Drannor.
I would suggest you play a Dark Elf as a noble (land ruling) character in the upcoming game Dark and Light. While you can play it as a fighter the nobles are very social and since they control the land they rule (can put out bounties to enforce rules) they will be defining the level of roleplay. These characters gain social skills from activities that aid the community. We can always use more people who want to roleplay and be nobles.
This is the only game that gives players enough flexibility to roleplay and have that roleplay affect the state of the game. The top level roleplay is the conflict between the two realms, the Dark and the Light. The quickest introduction to the lore (but with a Light bias) is to visit my clan web site (under construction) and look in the public forum and in the articles. Then move on the game boards itself. The site can be found at http://www.ageofjudgement-dnl.org
Whatever you choose stay away from EerQuest, it will take your life.
You want to mantain your life...........
Dont you?
If you're a true tabletop roleplayer, you likely wont find a satisfactory roleplaying environment in any graphic-based game....yet. Perhaps someday down the road when there are more established, solid games out there, you may.
EverQuest does not have much of a roleplay environment (that being, the players do not roleplay). I've also tried Dark Ages of Camelot, City of Heroes, and recently, Asheron's Call 2, and have not seen much roleplaying in any of them - even on the so-called 'roleplaying' servers. Basically, if you're playing any graphical MMORPGs today, and you're a roleplayer, you'll be in the minority.
If you really wish to play a game where the roleplayers probably still outnumber the non-roleplayers, you might want to try a text MUD. It may seem archaic, but it depends how important roleplay is to you. Do you want the graphics, at the expense of having to look at the moronic names, incessant out of character talk, and overall dewdness?
Neverwinter Nights is just such a game, some servers cater to roleplayer exclusivly. Because the servers are run by players, and the game is free to play after you buy the game+expansions, it replicates everything that text muds ever had(EVERYTHING, even vampires on some servers) and adds great graphics.
If your thing is not seeing stupid names, join an enforced roleplaying server.
To top it off many of the best servers have multiple DMs on 24/7 who are willing to DM for just about any good roleplayer out there.
Verious servers have various degrees of PvP/PK. Everything from Arena servers to No-PVP-Period(includeing fireballs not hurting other PCs).
have you tried UO yet? its an old game but its not really a lvl up treadmill, and has tons of content(more than any other mmorpg out but its also the most outdated). You just have to be able to get past the graphics. Most others that i know of are lvl up style mmorpg's. UO is skill-based and your skills go up based on use.
I agree with the others in this thread though, i've found most hardcore roleplayers arent generally happy with most mmorpg's.
Thanks for the help . I will try them as soon as possible.
Well, Ive tried Neverwinter Nights a while ago and it was a big disappointment - 99% of the skills or feats are related to combat. Its not my kind of game, and unless it be different in a multiplayer environment, I dont think it gonne please me. But I will give it a try anyway.
Everquest... I read about it a bit, and it seems too hack-n-slash... but gonna give it a chance also.
Dark and Light... hummm ... seems very interesting... gonna search more about it.
Yeah... I dont really think Im gonna find anything so good as the table top gaming sessions. I tried the muds some time ago, and got a bit bored with its reeeaaallyyy slloooowww ppaaaccinnngg...... hehe. But thx anyway.
Ive just got UO and will try it later. The gfx seems really old, but, "do not judge a book by its cover" right?
Thx everybody.
Diffrent to the point of being an entirly diffrent game on some servers that happens to use the same engine.
There are servers that have compleatly replaced everything generic about NWN with their own systems, races(with custom models), areas(with custom models), quests, custom feats, custom skills. Some servers you can't shout on, some you can, some are perma-death, some are roleplay-enforced, some are PK arenas.
Give it a couple of days, and try those 2 servers I mentioned. You'll have to download a hakpak to play on them(in addition to both expansions) but it's worth it.
Those games you named SOUNDS like DnD but lol, try.....EVE Online, or AC2
You can wait for WoW, EQ2, Vanguard to come out.....
