Although I haven't tried it myself, I'm sure people are going to say Dark Age of Chamelot.
and others will say Lineage 2 if you want hardcore open pvp.
and then people like me will say, Anarchy Online is faction vs faction but but pvp is only on flagged players (easy to get flagged) or in pvp zones. (sci-fi future based)
but then someone else will add EVE to the list, since it has pvp zones aswell and is company vs company kind of thing.

You forgot ShadowBane. It is full-on PvP.

I am finding that 2nd to last reply incrediably amuseing:)
People say they want open-pvp, and give out lots of theories about how such open pvp will form a community for protection, misanthropists will be hunted down, player police, ectera.
Then when it happens (say in shadowbane) and they can't PK anyone without conquences for their charecter...Everyone says it sucks:)
I played EQ PVP for quite some time and although it had flaws it was a good crack. I think EQ2 will be a vast improvement when it comes to PVP rules, making it much more worthwhile and enjoyable.
PVP is definately the best mmo game type, i played a non pvp character for 3 years in EQ and a pvp char for 1 1/2 years and the pvp side of the game was far more enjoyable, it gives you all the elements of a non pvp server but with the added thrill of being someones target.
Next mmo i play will definately be EQ2 and i will start on a pvp server without a doubt.

Bad news, EQ2 won't have any kind of PvP at release, and the devs said they don't have any plans for PvP anytime soon after release.
If you're big into PvP I would look more towards DnL than WoW, though DnL won't be out for 6 months or so after WoW releases, so you could probably play both.

EQ2 isnt going to have any PVP on release, and according to their site they aren't planning on adding PVP anytime soon.
That announcement certainly dropped my level of enthusiasm for the game's release. I'm sure i'll still check it out though.
Such a shame, because EQ's pvp system wasn't too bad. I think maybe that SOE havent figured out a fair and rewarding system for pvp.
Dont like the look of WoW myself so i'll prolly give that a miss, depends on the reports i hear about the pvp side.

there really isnt much of a consequence ot PK'ing in SB, depending on how you do it and what guild/nation your in. Its very easy to get away with non-accountability rpk'ing(errant, being in a big nation, flycatcher trees) and it occurs all the time in SB. SB is a griefers paradise, you need thick skin and have a gamer mentality not to get frustrated too easily. Imo SB's core siege design is flawed, because it encourages griefing the other side to the point of making them quit to win. And when someone does 'win', servers generally die and people end up leaving the game or moving to other more competetive servers. Which has alot to do with why SB is in the state SB is in, more than a few servers were monpolized, and then turned into ghost towns.
Dont get me wrong, i think in the right guild/nation, SB can be one of the best mmorpg's out there for pvp. I just wouldnt reccomend it to a total noob since your going to go through alot of frustration with how the gameplay mechanics are setup. Theres alot of spy paranoia with new players, and at some point you wont have the luxury of having a homebase(freehold), and will have to find a guild/nation to take you in, unless you want to bounce around being pk'd at ruins. A veteran can usually handle that lifestyle, but not a noob trying to buildup his assets and toons. Its a whole lot easier if you know a vet part of a nation already who can help you get started, and help you lvl up w/o being pk'd over and over again around safeholds or pickup group members turning on you at a vulnerable moment. SB is a very true noobie unfriendly game.
SB does boast imo one of the best character building systems in any mmorpg i've played. Its UO style pvp, very different than alot of other mmorpg style pvp games.
IMO, I think the best PvP type of MMO will be Dragon Empires. I think DE will be the answer for the lovers of PvP.
I am not real big on PvP, But I use to play on DT with AC and also liked DAoC, but DAoC seemed to miss something which I can't really put my finger on. As for DnL, have fun. I think that one will be more of a hunt than a duel. Shadowbane has some good concepts, but they didn't see the big picture and it just created Chaos. I think SB is one of the biggest lessons PVP's learned in MMO's. RYL seems to be going in the right direction, but you can see too much is focused on the BIG DOLLAR. Well, what else to you expect from a Korean game hehe.
I have followed, tested a lot of MMO's ever since I left AC and EQ and DAoC (which I am sure a lot of others here have to) and obviously the massive of floods of MMO's really show how most see a lot of money in the genre. Of course money is a very large factor. But the ones that have atleast 45% of their thoughts on making gamers go WOW are the ones that will win in the end.
As for PvP MMO's though, I think DE will stabilize while DnL will struggle to keep up with it. Now some here will say I am full of it. But you have to think about it. There are a lot that would play PvP if it had more purpose than what we do in FPS games. Most MMO's with PVP don't have any PvP meaning, except for a few now, but they are so surface and shallow it still is like FPS style. I think DE has shown really well to give great purpose for PvP and it will attract more that are just considering it and not just the hardcore PVP players.
Would you mind explaining some of the purposed DE has for PvP?
