Unknown status ailment -- I'm battling Margo's archers at the moment and they happen to enjoy casting a particular status effect on my character that I don't know what it is. A violet-glowing chain of some sort wraps around my character. Does anyone knows what this is and what effect it does on a character? And, where does one find a mercenary's status in the game? Sorry for the totally newbie-like question...

That's called Silence my friend, it prevents you from casting spells and also reduces your defense greatly, as well as damages you every round for 2 rounds. It's an archer skill.
Oh! So that's what it is! So, if I have an archer, he/she would probably have that skill as well? I really, really want an archer but can't get one yet since I haven't levelled up yet.
