I dont see a problem with it. Everyone knows that jedi and sith are going to be the 2 most popular classes no matter what. Might as well let people choose it to start with. So long as the dont make those 2 classes overpowered versus the non force wielding classes it wont matter.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
Bioware tends to lean toward character developement in their games, so players will probably not be starting as a full fledged Jedi or Sith. More than likely, they will start as sensitives and have to work their way up with their choices deciding what they will become. That is a guess based on their previous games so I could be very wrong also.
yeah i hope that happens. i think it would be really fun to have to train to become a full fledged sith. like in kotor when you go to korriban to infiltrate the sith and can kill your competition at the training facility which also helps make you even more badass. evil ftw

You'll probably start out as a padawan or apprentice rather than a full-fledged jedi knight. That would be more along the lines of their previous games.
No problem,, Just so you know this isnt pre cu swg.. just incase you missed it
No kidding. "Jedi must be unlockable" isn't some law chisled into stone somewhere.

I know. As much as I appreciate some of the commentary from the Pre-NGE/CU guys, they need to chill and realized that TOR is -not- going to be the second coming. Far from it.
From what's already been announced, we know the 'flavor' of the game. It's not going to be some epic sandbox like SWG was, it's not going to be the holy grail to these guys. Now if only they'd see that and stop trolling over here for TOR to be that way.
>.>
TOR is going to be epic in its OWN way. It will not be a sandbox like SWG so everyone needs to just chill out and forget that. Im sorry if you are pissed that SWG is not what you wanted it to be BUT TOR is NOT going to be the revival of SWG.
Having Jedi/sith as a starter is not bad. If you know anything about the Old Republic lore you know that there we LARGE amounts of jedi and sith in the galaxy at this time. The game would not be the old republic if it did not have lots of jedi and sith.

According to the interview at gamspot the Sith have come back in full force, but a peace agreement has been formed. That is where the game starts. To me it would have been a big mistake not allow Jedi/Sith at the start of the game. I do question weather or not it's a good idea to allow the other classes though. I worry that there will be to many Jedi/Sith running around. On the otherhand the game seems to have a lot of solo content so there may not be a lot of interaction between players anyway.
The problem I have with this line of thinking is simply the only reason jedi were not good in SWG was the simple fact that for some and honestly most it killed immersion because it ruined the lore. Now I am not naive and realize sometimes feelings tend to get spread to people myself included that are simply suggestions our minds agree with but honestly anyone who tries this "Jedi as a starter class is not good" thing is speaking foolishly.
The timeline involved has thousands of jedi and sith running around apparent by the overview of the time and it is based on a part of the lore that focused on jedi and sith as well in KOTOR.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

I'm just glad that it's Bioware that is doing it. The company who makes arguably some of the best RPG's out there.
SWG was set in the wrong period to have Jedi running around like womp rats all over the place, which was the main objection to them. Too many Jedi dueling in front of Theed Starport, something you never saw in the movies at all, even before Ep IV. Lightsaber duels were unheard of outside one on one or one on two confrontations. The only mass lightsaber battles were between Jedi and droids.
KOTOR is a different time period when FS types were not in hiding and were supposed to be virtually extinct. Recall that the only public FS type in the original trilogy was Darth Vader. The Emperor was secretly, still, a Sith Lord. Everyone, from Grand Moff Tarkin on down, thought that Vader was the last remnant of the "ancient religion" of the Jedi. Recall that in KOTOR, Jedi vs. SIth is considered by most people to be ridiculous, because they don't draw the distinction. Jedi and Sith are sides of the same coin. So, Vader was it. All that's left of the "nonsense" of The Force.
The problem in games of course is always with characters who are, in lore, ridiculously powerful, which tends to not work well in a game. BioWare fixed this in KOTOR by having it possible for non FS types to have lightsaber resistant weapons and armor, in the form of energy shielding.
Still, the best counter to a Jedi is a Sith and vice versa.
I mean, we joked in SWG that it had turned into KOTOR online. Because you had all these lightsaber wielding fools around, like in KOTOR!
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

I'd be happy if everyone was either a Jedi or ranged, then it can be broken down from there; hopefully something like the KotOR series.
I don't care really what they do as long as I can become a BH, always loved playing that role.

Having people start out as Jedi or Sith is no problem in the setting for this game. It was wrong with SWG, because we all know there are hardly any Jedi alive in that age.
As far as balance goes - there's more than enough material from both KotOR 1 and 2 to show that Jedi are not invincible when pitted against non-Jedi. But yes, some people will be complaining that Jedi are either underpowered or overpowered. Some will also complain about the same regarding all other fighting classes. This is the nature of MMO's, and no matter how this game turns out, it won't be any different in that regard.
Jedi and Sith should be statrer professions.
And they should be atleast ten times stromger then a non force profession. Thats the whole point of it. Sp Bioware have to slve the problem with a big world instead. For wxample: If a Jedi goes and attack someone on the street, they will be kicked out from the Jedi Ordr..without a lightsaber.
And when i mean ten times stronger, i dont talk about health, a clean shot to head will still kill anythng.
Well, you didn't start as a Jedi in either of the KOTOR games (well the exile was but you had to progress to get it back) and had to eventually get to the point where you were.
Hopefully they don't hand out a glowstick on character creation.
Now, this is a VASTLY different era from what the timeline should have been in SWG, there are thousands and thousands of Jedi (and Sith at this time) running around.
I used to play a game called Star Wars Battlefront (the original) and it had a PvP part where you could pick Boba Fett, I owned everyone in those games because I could fly. Jedi had puch and pull which evened the playing field, anyways, my point is if BioWare does something similar, I will be a happy BioWare addict
However, as in SW:Battlefront people always complained how they got owned by jedi playing the ranged characters and complaining like this is to be expected when you have ot use your noodle to play. People don't like to figure things out, most just want to be told which is the best and how to play it. Where is the fun it that?
I hope there are jedi, or at least and option to pick it up early in the developement of your character. I myself, I just want to pew-pew those with the glowing sticks!

i heard them hint at being able to play a criminal..this would appeal to me greatly..you can have your lightsabers but i will steal your shoes.
