my first upgrade from my 8600 was a 8800 gts oc2- installed it and it didnt boot up.
i since had it replaced.
been ok for about 2 months.
but for the past month or so i cannot turn off my computer without a fight for it to come back on.
today i put back in my 8600 and all is back to normal.
i thought i remember someone here mentioning a 8000 or 8800 series problem and it will be replaced at no cost.
im not worried about getting it replaced, i know it will be but am more curious if anyone knows anything about a bad batch of these cards or something.
thanks

What kind of power supply do you have? Maybe its a heat issue?
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
The 8800 has had a lot of problems from what I've read. A lot of the times, it just doesn't play nicely with whatever motherboard you are using. But from what you're saying, how it ran ok for 2 months, I would say that you probably got a defective one.
Is your 8800 a G92 or one of the older ones? If it's an older one i would RMA that thing for a G92 8800 GT, the card still kicks ass this day.
You can probably RMA it even now. What company made your card, is that a BFG?
I remember reading on several boards about people having trouble with GeForce 8800 cards (I don't rmember the exact model). I distinctly remember my husband saying that people were complaining on the WoW boards about 8 months ago or there-abouts. They were complaining about all sorts of things, BSODs, slow framerates, etc. I only remember because I had upgraded from a 7800 to an 8800 and although I didn't have any problems, I was curious.
Edit: I asked and he remembers a lot of complaints about the BFG 8800 GTS.
sounds like a definite power supply issue. Any idea how many amps your 12v rail (or rails) is capable of? for the 8800GTS 512 you'll need 24a on the 12v rail. Anything less and you may not be able to POST
I think nVidia may actually have listed their minimum as 26a on the 12v rail

i have an xps 720, 1 yr old.
i was looking through the documentation and sys info and couldnt find the Power supply info. im fairly confident it is not. the thing would work with no problems once it did turn on.
its a BFG 8800GT 512gddr3 OC2 (theres a mouthful)
im going to RMA it, perhaps for an upgrade-
whats a good replacement for this card?
how are the new 260, 280s ?

i would be dealing with dell. they have jerked me around in the past - i bought a brand new system when i was down in florida but it got royaly screwed up i told them to forget the whole thing-and the last video card issue, and now this...
what do you think i can trade them for? im sure they'll go for a upgrade/trade at no cost to me for my troubles/
BFG NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX OC™ 512MB PCIe 2.0
260, 280- ??
or what do you think is a good fair trade? i used to keep up with this stuff a long time ago. 3dfx ages, lol.

I looked up your Dell online, its a pretty nice system. If your power supply is 750 watts, then you have this one.
model N750P-00
Input 100-120 v 13A
.........200-240 v 7A 50-60hz
Output ................+ 12VA 18.0 A +5V 16.0A
750 MAX ............+ 12VB 18.0 A -12VB 0.2 A
...........................+ 12VC 18.0 A +3,3V 30.0 A
...........................+ 12VD 16.0A +5VFP 3.0 A
MAX Combined power ON +5v & + 3,3v OUTPUT IS 150W
MAX combined Power ON + 12VA + 12VB + 12VC + 12VD OUTPUT IS 700W
+ 12VA 18.0 A +5V......16.0A
+ 12VB 18.0 A -12VB....0.2 A
+ 12VC 18.0 A +3,3V 30.0 A
+ 12VD 16.0A +5VFP 3.0 A
+ 5v & + 3,3v 150W
+ 5v & + 3,3v 150W
+12VA + 12VB + 12VC + 12VD 700W
+12VA + 12VB + 12VC + 12VD 700W
You might have the 1000 watt one though, and I cant find the specs for that one yet.

A graphics card would not prevent your computer from "turning on." Your computer would at least make it to POST.
You are having a motherboard or power supply issue.
Take out the graphics card.
If you still have to fight to get it to "turn on," your mobo is bad, because if a mobo is bad, it will be bad regardless of the strain on the PSU. If it turns on every time after removing the card, then that means your PSU is shoddy and could not support the card.
Errr- dude you got a Dell! I guess you cant troubleshoot yourself without voiding your warranty when you open the case.
No there is no inherent problem with any nvidia's since the 6600 GT's. You need enough power and a proper slot alignment (needs to be inserted into PCI correctly).
The 8000's and newer where made under a lot tighter control for the PCB's. Which means a more stable product and you just buy a box with a picture on it, but same card. Anyway... I drift..
ok a little experimentation earlier today.
as i said, i have my old card here as well. a 8600.
the same power supply input is on the 8600 as the 8800 cards. they're identical. fits like an oj glove.
i left the PS plug out of the 8600 when putting it in and i could not launch a game. windows said not enough power.
place the power cord back in and all is good with the 8600.
i believe my rig has the 750 watt PS.
-I will subtlety invade your psyche-
Well just because the 8600 and 8800 both use just one 6-pin connector, they don't draw the same amount of power. I understand your PSU is 750 watts, and it should be more than adequate. However it is possible the unit is defective. Try connecting the 6 pin adapter to different lines off your PSU, see if that helps.
I just cant think of a single instance where a bad graphics card has prevented a computer from powering on. It doesn't make sense.
