Why play WAR over DAOC?

CamthylionCamthylion Member UncommonPosts: 220

I own WAR and DAOC I have a 50 paly in camelot, lvl 20 eng in war and a 18 chosen and so far it doesn't hold up to DAOC.  Why would mythic release something that isn't any better then what they already had?  warhammers crafting is terriable along with it's questing/grp system... also the classes are bland and unbalanced "need more order tanks"  I had high hopes for warhammer but it really got boring too me when I hit 20 and nothing changed from lvl 1 besides my powers lol  just lacks much needed content imo  all I do is scenario pvp when I log in or rvr when I can find it other then that it's not worth playing.

anyone else feel this way about WAR ?

I have not played DAoC in a long time but I would agree WAR has some design issues.  It also has many great design features.

Guess the obvious answer is play WAR over DAoC because some have been in DAoC for years and frankly ANY game gets old over time.

If DAoC had a healthy population I'd re subscribe to it in a flash.  I've tried WAR and it's not for me and I'm ok with it.  I just wish the population was better with camelot.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

my thought as well I would go back to DAOC but I don't like playing a dead server... mythic shoulda just made DAOC 2... silly wankers!

Well, with all the buzz about WAR, Mythic's been very quiet about the possibility of a DAOC 'Origins' server.

But I think now that everyone has gotten a chance to see what WAR really is (and how much it really isn't the 2nd coming of DAOC) they'd get a lot of players who'd come back to a fresh start on the new server, with the rules they've set out. (no TOA, Original BG's etc)

    We can only hope.

I was waiting for Origins when they first announced it.  My closed beta experience with WAR was not exactly positive.. I bought it more to kill a month than anything.

Of course when they actually put the FAQ out about Origins I didn't want to play that anymore.  Just as well since its most likely not going to happen at all now.  It was put on indefinite hold far as I was able to find out on VN boards.

I really was having fun playing on Gareth after it was clustered and some of the other changes were made I had no desire to play.

There are some things I liked in WAR... but if I had a choice between a true Origins server and WAR.. I'd be in DAoC.

I would even take a real "classic" UO server..

Ok I was uberly hyped about WAR, as a old player of DAoC I was excited to see what mythic could do with this game...but it was obvious from start that WAR was just that...hype. Now before I get tomatos throwed at me, I did give WAR a fair chance I've been in big RVR battles I've ran the PQ's with full groups and tried my fullest to enjoy this game but thats the thing I wasn't enjoying myself, not in the least I was more playing because everyone else was playing not because I wanted to play, so here I am now crawling back to DAoC my first and only true MMO love(oh...DA why did I leave you? *cries*) and I'm sad to see the game isn't as populated as it used to be but I'm hanging onto the small glimmer of hope that it might turn around with origins.

War is close enough to DAOC in enough ways to make it the true heir. However, I think what a lot of DAOC vets(myself included) are missing is the lore and realistic look of DAOC.  WAR feels like WOW but with good RVR. The leveling is slow, but not any slower than DAOC back in the day, and you can level by staying in RVR like you can now on DAOC Classic Servers.

The same reason why SoE watered down SWG and EQ2, and same reason why Funcom produced AoC and Mythic produced WAR.

Everyone is trying to appeal a minority in MMORPGs..............the casual market.

Because of this the quality of the product is inferior, and what they got left with is the casual crowd they were looking for (around 200K for each game)

When developers will start developing MMORPGs for "core" players (not hardcore), not only the quality will be higher, but you will see mass migration from WoW to some of those games.

DaoC kills WAR.I don't recall exactly why I left..I think it was a combination of the patch that made you farm pve to compete in pvp,and Shadowbane released.

6 years in DAoC continuous subscription.  Id go back if population was better and I didnt have to pay for two accounts (ie: do somethng about bots)

Edit: and no, i dont want to play classic and Im not going with origins and have to deal with stealth-a-rific MG again.  Combine everything on one server, dump MLs as they are, but maybe let ppl do them for RP or something, like once a month lock out..i dont know.  I hated ToA when it was super hard, but kinda miss that in a MMO now a days.

When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.

  • ninjajucerninjajucer Member Posts: 219

I totally agree with merging the servers to solve the dwindling population. But disagree on the classic and bots thing. Not everyone wants to play TOA, or see people with two accounts with their buff bots following them around. Puposely using a bot in game is just stupid. I'm not one to start arguements, but bots are an unnecessary evil.

Classic is a great server and people would not play it if there were bots on it. TOA is a joke. And Origins will probably be the only thing to save the game at this point. I played when it first started, and completely enjoyed the original game without the bots, instances, expansions, MLs, NF, minotaurs, DF, and all the other BS they threw in there over the years. I hate to see it die as well, but unless Mythic announces something soon, I fear for the worst.

War kept my attention for about a week then i was bored. PVP is nearly as bad if not worse then WOW and all of us old schoolers that played WOW understand. It's really a shame that such a rename PVP/RVR master has there name branded to a game like Warhammer Online. There is nothing about this game better then DAOC not even the graphics which are actually worse then WOW cartoons .

  • ArawonArawon Member Posts: 1,108

Net net..for me War was poorly designed....and DAOC is dead.Neither  should be considered.

the first time i saw WAR i thought it looked to much like WOW with the cartoonish they should made it look more like DAOC more relastic.

Do you seriously feel there are core and hardcore players still playing WoW?  No just addicts?

That game is the queen of casual games and thats the damn 11 million players.  Its the Grandmoms and moms and dads.  The little 10 year olds and non gamers.  You really go both ways here in your post,  Yes you are correct for saying these games were watered down to get some of that 11 mill subs.  But you are wrong to say that there are core and hardcore within that 11 million subs.

Us "Core" and "Hardcore" are jumping from new MMO to new MMO hunting and drooling for that Awesome rush we have not had in a decade almost.  We will not stop untill we find it.  Aion, Darkfall, SW:OR, Jumpgate, Huxley, Earthrise, Spellborn,  F.E., Stargate.   You will see ALL of us there.  We all were the beta players of WoW the driving force of all MMO's.  I dont feel right that someone would catagorize us any other way.

There's an Easter Egg in WAR where you can go to Camelot with WAR's Graphics..

    www.youtube.com/watch

    Can you imagine?

    Orgins Server with WAR's Interface?

They both use the same engine (Gamebryo).. Wonder how hard it would really be for them to make just one more client for DAoC when they launch Origins...

I played DAoC since October 2001, and loved almost every minute of it (ToA was kinda bad, but I do like a challenge).  I had a brief affair with World of Warcraft in 2004, but came back soon after. I finally left earlier this year when Age of Conan came out.  Played that for about 3 months, then switched to Warhammer in September.  I just let my subscription run out in Warhammer, and I'm at a loss of what to play.  I still miss my days in DAoC, but feel that I cannot get back into it with only ~700-1000 players on a server.  DAoC is the better of the two games, even with it's rather outdated look and feel.  That however gives it a very nostalgic feel.  Alot of things Mythic did to DAoC over the years has slowed down the enthusiasm of the game, starting way back when ToA came out.  Each expansion after that has slowly driven away players, as well as the outdated look.  If DAoC had the population, and I had the money, I would probably come back easily.  As for the Origins server, I do love this idea.  Nothing comes close to the original, and Mythic, unlike other companies, actually listens to thier players (at least when DAoC is concerned).  This is why I still like Mythic, even though I really don't like Warhammer at all.  I would love to see the Origins server to come online and watch DAoC come back to life.  The peak time of DAoC could still be ahead of us, but unfortunately, it seems that with Warhammer hogging up most of the development, and it pains me to say this, DAoC will die.

If DAOC could get back 10% of what WAR supposidly sold on day one 750,000 copies then the game woudl simply rock. The more and more we look the more and more we realize just how superior DAOC is/was to the games of today.  Realm vs Realm on non TOA servers worked and would work with more people. The game on the classic servers doesn't need change it just needs players is all. It seems the numbers on classic are starting to pick up a bit again.

Would it be a good idea to start DAoC over getting a WAR sub?

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

The only thing lacking in DAOC is population. It's a incredible game regardless.

  • EloasEloas Member Posts: 11

Mythic could easily bring back Dark Age, in my opinion if they were to have a dual subsription.

You pay for WAR and you are allowed to play DAoC for free. However this would result in the loss of what Mythic seems to want which is apparently a WoW clone. (to some extent)

Now I'll admit I haven't played WAR yet, but I can't imagine the majority of people are wrong about its flaws. I honestly doubt we will ever see the glory days are DAoC, which I sadly miss. However maybe it could be bring back to the point it was a few years ago.

The main complaint about DAoC is population now and was balance back then. Seems like they've had to time to balance, now just have to get pop back.

  • noblotnoblot Member Posts: 287

GOA was doing duel subscription, but I only have time for one MMO in my life :)

I think DAoC has two major thing over WAR, three realms and that all players level up/ rank up in the same PvE zones (generally). Spreading players over three (warfronts) in WAR, I feel dilutes the game. Oh and instant dungeons for leveling were so much better.

However WAR has a lot going for it. Scenarios (luv em or hate me) are great for some enjoyable PvP. The oRvR lakes are much better than the battle grounds. Stealth is so much better handled. Most of the time you are not one shotted. Most of the time you are not mezzed, stunned, or even rooted (I used to go put the kettle on when I got mezzed). Tactics, moral abilities, works well to give your character a different build. Tomb of knowledge is just great, I love it. Mirror classes between the realms, stops so much moaning about class balance, and yet the classes do feel quite different. Quest appear on your map, and you can do them, I always had to find an internet guide in DAoC.

So onto DAoC 2. Same as WAR please, but three realms. Same Zonal design as DAoC, but lets have oRVR lakes instead of BG (along with scenarios). Stealth as per WAR, along with mirror classes. Do all that and you'll have a MMO to be proud of my boy :)
