Why does everyone play this game lol I tried it because I was experimenting with other games and this intrigues me. If you just want to read my question it's the last paragraph.
It reminds me of how hard it is to make a successful game I played Lotro, vanguard, AOC and EQ2 and they all seem to be great games although I didn't play them for long barring EQ2, they're all missing a healthy population and when I tried this game, well now I know why, it is a very strong point for it and I can see there's probably no trouble socializing in this game.
It kind of made me wonder though what the heck do people see in this game that makes it better for them to play then the rest, except the population.
I like the game I made a warlock got her to level 8 and it impressed me, I had to look pass the graphics though they were terrible it forced me to make a human woman, the rest of the races were just awful.
I got 20 duel invites in 30 mins lol, most were level 30+ even one guy was 60, coming from eq2 was so different I had 10 duel invites in a year and they were same levelled people, I don't know what I'd prefer truthully, even though mismatching duel invites probably is a bit more annoying then not having it at all.
But back to the point of this is, we're in 2008 a good pc costs the equivalent to £300, most gamers should be able to afford this so now for a game that's in 2008 not 2002 why is this still the most populated: Aoc has very good graphics & an interesting feel, EQ2 is better imo overall but even them graphics don't excite me, Vanguard looks to be better if it was populated, Lotro looks good maybe under populated which makes it feel a bit empty? Is this game so populated because people don't have machines for the other games, or they just love the simplicity, or maybe they love the drama of people duelling and kids yelling fools to others(No pun intended but I kept seeing it and I know humans love argumentive situations they just secretly deny it)? Or is it just that I didn't give this game long enough... and when you go up the levels this game dramatically improves and blinds you from the gaming world around you?

OP, It's about time you get to the end game and choose a raiding guild.
Basic Wow is only a fraction of what you get past level 70.
Go to a theater and meet Redcap or Romeo and Juliette, or relive the battle of Mount Hyjal.
Choice is yours: dozens of dungeons and raids to choose from and BG's you'll never get bored in.
WotlK will have world PvP you wouldn't think it's possible in an MMORPG.
All thanks to those fantastic art graphics btw. At least they have speed and control, not some stuttering, clunky and unresponsive button smashing.
Then come back and say : "why did I even ask this question ?"
Blizzard made a decision to worry more about gameplay and smooth animations over 'screenshot' images.
The fact that you can cast 1.5 second spells and instant cast spells and the animations look right is a big thing for me. Both AOC and Warhammer had better looking screenshots, but when you tried to do something ingame, the animations weren't able to keep up with what was actually happening. Warhammer in particular got confusing because I'd be doing something, and my character would still be finishing the animation from my last action. I run a pretty decent computer, but I don't want to have terrible gameplay just so I can take pretty screenshots.
The other big thing is gameplay. Leveling from 1-70 is just fun.. the quests flow well, they are appropriately challenging and reward you with reasonable things. Again, in AOC I did a very 'normal' type quest that was similar to other things I'd done before, but when I got my reward it was this huge upgrade. The pacing of quests and rewards in WOW is just done very well.
How can you not see it when it's staring you right in the face?
It's NOT the graphics. They aren't the best, although they are a lot better looking than people care to admit.
It's NOT the fact that it runs on low end machines. My PC can play War or AoC or LoTRO or any other MMO, and yet I CHOOSE to play WoW.
It's NOT the community. The community is what it is. Every game has it's share of childish behavior, Spammers, Gold Sellers, Griefers etc.
So what does that leave? Gameplay. No, don't discount it just because YOU don't see it. 11 Million people DO see it. It's not so much that the gameplay is leaps and bounds above the competition, it's very similar in many regards, but rather it's all the little things that you take for granted that's better. It's the attention to detail. It's the smooth character control. It's the customizable interface. It's many things. WoW simply does it better than the rest. It's hard to come up with the reasons, because it's not 1 or 2 or even a dozen, there are hundreds of little reasons why WoW is better than the competition. Most just like to call it polish and it's undeniable. It's simply a more polished game than the rest.
And while a lot of games claim they have a few better features, they are also lacking a lot of basic things that WoW does better. If you try to point them out, people discount them as being nit picky. Yeah, it's nit picky and that's what people want. They WANT nit picky. They WANT you to think about the little stuff. That's called polish. All the great features are meaningless, if all the minutiae isn't just right and the competition has failed to realize this.
Haha hell no, it will still be ugly, a pixellated nickelodeon mess with ten years old textures, brats yelling off topic bullshit on a massive scale, talking about sex for hours without GM intervening despite reports, SMS chats, gold spam over and over and over and over and over and over again, grind grind grind grind grind, no community, no rpg (due to overall young and retarded playerbase AND GMs not enforcing rpg rules on even specific servers), game masters invisible, inefficient, sending automated out of topic answers through mailboxes three hours after you asked something and asking you to... ask in the forums (I asked eg serious question about a blatant guild chat hack we were suffering from, the GM told me 2 hours later it didn't exist, I have 4 more blatant experiences with Bliztard's GMs misbehaving like this).
Environment is stale, nothing is changing, except a zombie event in 4 years, no background story at all (how could they with their "WoW lore" anyway lol), only npcs whining for you to kill boars and wolfies or asking you to fly to X or Y, an overall feeling of killing statues in a wax museum. Players still rolling for need after their 10th alt (cuz they are sorry they didn't know the difference with greed ha!).
I insist on the stale easy environment the 2 factions aren't at all at war, they just walk around and mind their own grinding business, they meet in battlegrounds to grind honor points in capture the flag or capture building type of battles that don't affect anything in the world. I've seen for ages player bots joining automatically bgs and afk all night long, taking the place of real players (they were like half of real players in Alterac), you just can sit there and not move your finger and you'll get plenty of honor point to buy new gear. Bliztard never did anything about this. Devs have also a retarded 10 year old humour that makes you can't love the world and take it seriously, and everything in the quests is very polically correct and dull.
End game is profound grinding for months in dungeons or for reputation, boring raids four nights/week to get shiny rainbow stuff that double the size of your char, that are useless with every updates or expansion.
About Bliztard: stealing (in Bliz terminology: "polishing") any idea from other devs that had the idea and guts to implement them, but nerfing anything and depriving the game of any epic feeling, selling any service possible even to 4 year old customers, not granting you even ONE free character transfer eg, disgusting massive merchandising about anything possible to make more bucks for their sharehodlers.
Oh let me finish on a positive note: mounts and pets are fun in WoW, if you like pets then you can bare with all the above mentioned points and pay them your rent
As a conclusion : worst community, worst grind, worst gear oriented gameplay, worst GMs, worst graphics, greediest company.
So OP respect yourself and run the hell out of this pos
Only a truly GREAT game could invoke this kind of pure hatred.
or a game that ppl dont like
Yeah you guys got some valid points there and I agree with most of you, but I never said I didn't see the gameplay ofcourse I see it, it's good but it isn't amazing.
When I'm in Azeroth it feels like I'm playing an advanced version off Maplestory not through the gameplay or anything just solely due to the community.
Anyhow I just feel that you players deserve a better game, now don't get me wrong Wow most of been the holy grail in 2003! but it's like 2008 now and it's outdated in a lot of elements even gameplay.
What's worrying is that this game's getting an extra 100k subscribers per month, it must be time for it to move on...
I mean let me put it in to perspective a little bit more - I've recently been playing some amazing games such as crysis, farcry 2, bioshock, fallout 3, fable 2, metal gear solid 4, Vanguard, Eq2 etc my friend when he comes round is speechless when he plays these and loves it.
When I go round to his house, he plays this and he's embarrased while he's playing it you can tell by his face and it gets boring. It does look kind of stupid at 21 playing this seriously. I'm not trying to flame anything here but I've had a lot more fun in a lot more games.
It's not so much that people like this game soooo much, as much as some people like to hate it.
Many people do like it, if you try to generalise the reasons why, you won't be able to escape the trap of comparing it to a pop phenomenon and with that assigning it the same flaws that all pop suffers from.
If you really want to understand, WoW is definetly the most discussed game on this forum, so it shouldn't really be hard to find some reason just by reading few pages of posts, not just in WoW forum.
'like' is a very subjective word.
As such, I'm sharing my opinion:
WoW may not have:
- the best pvp
- the best pve
- the best graphics
- the best lore
- the best community
- the best economy
- the best Customer Service
But it certainly does all the above in good and enjoyable quality.
Though it does have:
- the best UI customisation
- very good balance - all classes are desirable, none of them are overpowered *both* in pvp and pve. this is something you can't easily achieve in an MMO. and before you object with something like: 'but class xx is...', read my very first statement: this is *my* opinion on why i -like- WoW. thus the subjectivity.
- the best OS coverage (are there other **native** MMO in Mac than WoW ? No: WINE doesn't count)
hahahaha i imagine these frustrated brats coming into the wow forum and writing walls of text as fat depressed lonely people...
if u hate wow why even bother coming in here and post stuff? shouldnt u be playing ur MMo´s that have no grind kids gold sellers etc? (if such thing does exist), just face it losers...
WOW is the best MMORPG in the world and the most addictive game of ALL
keep living ur lives in the shadow of wow while we have all the blast, and HELL WE DO :D:D:D
I think the point has been made several times in other posts and a couple of times here as well and that is that although WoW doesn't do one particular thing extremely well it does everything to a decent standard which means that it appeals to a wider audience than other niche MMO's.
On the graphics point, i have never had an issue with them, they fit in with the game style and function well within the world in which they are set. Like everything else, the graphics are far from being the best in the MMO world, but they do the job they are designed to do within the framework of the game. That being said, there has been a nice change in the last patch with spell animations and buffs being jazzed up quite nicely.
Personally i am not a huge fan of raids etc and have never suffered from the whole 'grind' issue even after playing since release, but i do enjoy the social aspects of the game very much and play alongside some great people from all over Europe.
You will either like the game or you won't, but i think it is inarguable that it is the best all round MMO on the market. There are other MMO's that excel in their own areas of expertise, but if you are looking for a game with a bit of everything done well, there isn't another one out there yet.
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
