He's just appealing to common knowledge. If you read it closer he also states that the current game is the one he wishes was the original version. I just can't believe that they honestly still believe that the NGE is a good game....

Yes, but his answers are chaotic and contradictory: 'The NGE was a mistake' but 'I love the NGE game'? I genuionely think he knows absolutely nothing about the game.

part of me is torn.... I want SWG players to leave so the game gets shut down. But I dont want to be gaming with NGE players in TOR. It bothers me that NGE players care little about ethics or morality. How can they play a version of a game developed using STOLEN money and be okay with that ? How can they knowingly look the other way despite the crap SOE pulled with the Mustafar expansion ? How can they accept the lies and continue to pay them ? Shame on them. I want no part of those type of players.
Well, you're going to be "gaming with NGE players in TOR," so you'd better get used to the idea.

The answer is to get the old Bloodfin community together again on one server and grief them to death.
Heh count me in! :P
This is pathetic. It's not good enough for you that, apparently, SWG is going to sink with the TOR release, but now you want to actively grief those who stayed with SWG. What is wrong with you people?

IF the game is any good at all, and has RVR PVP, YES I do see the old Blodfin community going there.
And yes... FU if you are a carebear, etc. Bria is over ---->there.
Bloodfin was in it's day Escape From New York in a Star Wars skin. And we loved it that way. It was the most hardcore server, which is why it is the only one left that has population.

John: We would be happy to do that. The question is, is there enough of a subscriptions base for that. I'm anxious to play that game too, I think they're going to make a great game. Is there still going to be a subscriptions base for Galaxies, or will everyone go play the new game? I'd like to think the games are going to be very different and I think that definitely could happen.
WHAT? There is not enough of a Subscription Base NOW , but Smed and SOE like to kid them selves and the few thousand players left that there is. They must be a jolly lot over at SOE to exist in such a fantasy world of business disbelief.

BTW, isn't the inability to distinguish reality from fantasy a sign of insanity?
Insanity is a legal term. It's basically referring to someone who did not know right from wrong, reality from unreality, either at the time of the trial or the time of the crime. This is kind of slippery to nail down though because each state has their own twist on what is and what is not insanity. Click here for more info.

I really hope SWG never closes. As long as SWG exists, SOE will employ the dregs of the MMO development world to maintain it, and that prevents those developers from infecting games that have potential. Sure some of those dregs eventually escape (Helios, Dan Rubenfield, etc.), but they are at least contained longer than they otherwise would if SWG did not exist.
Smed Said "At some point we'll make a decision about when and if to sunset Galaxies, but as of right now we don't have any plans to do that." --- that we are willing to share with all of you - our Star Wars Sheep. Keep sending us your monthly subs and we MAY serve you some rebaked content that we used 3 months ago in EQ2.
Just the Fact Smed mentioned Sunsetting Galaxies means its going to happen - tick tock tick tock.
But Jester what will you and the OP do if SWG does ever shut down? I mean of course after the party, and burning the SWG dev's in effigy (again) and all that stuff?

Yeah, I agree in many ways. SOE in general and the NGE in particular are excellent "containment zones" for horrifically bad ideas and untalented developers/managers. If SOE shut down it'd sort of be like the dam that holds back a bunch of sludge collapsing, the sludge would flow out into the river.

I doubt it. I dont see TOR having long-term appeal for me. Its another linear theme park game. It will be worth the $50 and will probably last me 3-4 months but i dont see it being my home for years and years.
I certainly can see NGE players loving it. Its about as opposite from a sandbox game as you can get
This whole debate is pretty funny, I can't see them adding tags in SWTOR so that everyone can see who's an NGE player and who's a pre-cu/cu 'vet'. A dick is a dick no matter what game they've played in the past, plenty of them on both sides of the fence.

And it's perfectly illustritive of why Smed is a horseshit manager and doesn't belong within 5,000 lightyears of his job.
"The NGE was a mistake" and "the current game is the one I wish we launched with" are completely contradictory statements and one cannot believe both to be true and explain it in any rational way.
Actually I believe the truth is that Smed DOES NOT REALLY BELIEVE that the NGE was a mistake, because the current game is the one he wishes he had launched with. No, the mistake, as he has parsed since it's failure was obvious, was in how it was done, not that the NGE concept itself is a mistake and a terrible game. Yes, the way they implimented it was botched, because it was literally pulling the rug out from under every EXISTING customer they had in an attempt to replace us with another customer was botched and is half the reason why the NGE failed.
The other half is that the NGE was and is just a shitty game, buggy, broken, unfun, and yes, lacking content of the type that is supposed to be there for the kind of game it's supposed to be. WOW, for example, has probably hundreds of instanced dungeons by now, the NGE maybe a dozen. But I digress, the point is the NGE also failed to maintain (or attract) subscribers because on it's own merit it is just a crappy game. If it weren't it would have at least replaced the 240,000+ who left with at least enough new players to have blunted that noticeably. People I maintain contact with who still play tell me they never notice new playes, the only new faces are old ones who sometimes come back, try to like it, and leave.
Which is why, with Smed continuing to run things, everyone who wishes to continue to laugh at everything SOE does becoming a miserable failure are assured that this will continue to be the case. SOE has sunk tens of millions into the DCMMO black hole, a game btw that they can't even maintain a Dev team and lead producers/devs for. Hell, DCMMO has already run through a couple FORMER NGE devs and managers!

I agree, that the the biggest mistake was changing a game in mid stream with another version. The reasoning that Smed is using, is all hindsight. This goes for all that ever played the origional version of SWG as well.
If the NGE SWG was the game that would have been launched, it probably would have been very successful, even with all the bugs and whatnot. Now i know alot will say i'm full of it, but hear me out.
Most of us can't get past what SWG was, as compared to how it is at this moment. If they would have started out as it is now, none of us would even have any care or thought about, skill systems, 32 proffessions and all the other things gone from SWG now, because it woud have never existed.
Let's all remember, SWG came out before WOW, so if anything, WOW would have been copying SWG to a certain extent, not the other way around.
This whole SWG mess was caused because, instead of SOE making SWG2, they changed the origional. If they would have made the NGE a new SWG, subs would have lvled off and probably increased with the origional SWG and new subs would have been attained with SWG2. If this would have happened, LA wouldn't have had any reason's to want a new SW mmo, like they are doing now.
It's really all in how and what angle you look at it from.
They couldn't make the NGE a SWG2, besides the fact that SWTOR was already in development, because given a choice between the CU or Pre-CU game and the NGE, no one would have chosen the NGE, not enough to fill even one server. This is why they didn't launch it as a new game, they used force to convert everyone to it because they knew the existing base wouldn't like it and they had no desire to maintain the CU game. Had we been given a choice it would have been a HUGE joke, we'd have remained in our existing game and laughed at the empty "SWG2" servers.
Seriously. Even most of those still playing still would rather have the old game back, but get shouted down by the couple dozen in the "vocal minority" of actual NGE fans.
Had the NGE been the at launch game it'd be just as dead today as it is. Sure it would be less controversial, but you forget that HAD the game had any merit on it's own it WOULD have acquired a few ten thousands worth of completely new players, which it clearly has not.
from what Im told by folks in the industry, the NGE is basically a beta test for DC Comics. The subscribers to SWG are basically paying development costs for DC MMO. SOE is in fact stretching out the development time for DC to get a majority of development costs paid for. Once the box hits the shelves, any sales at all is 100% profit.
SOE is siphoning off revenue from SWG and using it to pay for DC Comics MMO development. Thats why SWG has such a small dev team and many former SWG devs now are working on DC.
The math proves this thievery...
SOE has roughly 5 people working on SWG (from what im told). Lets assume their total salary is 500k a years. SWG has about 20k subscribers paying $15 a month. Thats 300k or 3.6 million dollars a year. Subtract energy costs, maintenance, (lets assume 200k) - whats happening with that surplus 2.9 million dollars ? It certainly isnt going back into SWG.
They do this with a few MMO's and over 5 years a new MMO might have most of its development costs paid for. Expansions are easily paid for with this system. It generates a ton of easy profits. And its plain wrong.
Box sales are supposed to cover development costs, not my subscription fee. SOE is really crossing the line by doing this.
The main issue with the NGE was always been the violation of subscription money. Its long been established that subscription fees are designed to pay for content, maintenance, and bug fixes for that same game. SOE breaks this trust daily and uses funds for other games, expansions, or in the case of the NGE a massive revamp nobody wanted.
Thats why i wont ever touch a game by SOE ever again. My money isnt going where its supposed to. Its funding everything from other games, expansions that I'll be expected to re-buy again, and probably an ivory back scratcher for Smelly's big ars.

Dude, you described about 85% of the MMO playerbase.

Same, I refuse to touch an SOE or Sony product, I've had a couple bad Sony TVs the past 15 years their electronics are more expensive and their service sucks, I bought an XBox 360 and many people told me to get a PS3, bleh.
Anyways your numbers makes sense, they halted the boxed production in late 2005. If you look back at their history since launch 2003, they never really accurately addressed any issues players has brought up, they went along with "we'll do it whether the players like it or not", around publish 9 they even guaranteed the CU was to come out before JTL, maybe they don't know the meaning of guarantee.
From what I heard, DC Online might be released for console, if that's the case I don't think it'll be very widely popoular. There's Star Trek Online and Age of Conan (trying) that's attempting console versions too, console MMO kind of bothers me.
I expect that as we get closer to the release of TOR the TCG loot cards will become more and more relevant to combat in SWG. As players begin to leave in preparation for TOR SoE will undoubtedly try to squeeze more cash from those unfortunate people, then *poof* it'll all be worthless and non-existant.
Of this I have little doubt. Smedley is all about picking your pocket. He's a Ferengi troll.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Of course. The Untradeable Card Game is a Smed "macrotranscam" in the making. Sure you get "free" cards, and have a chance to get a relevant in game "loot" card. But the Devs as always control drop rates, etc, and can always tinker with them to make it nearly impossible to get the good ones for "free" whilst paying through the nose (one macrotranscamaction at a time) gets these much more often.
Thinking that this could (and is already) happening is very easy because SOE and their Devs have been proven far more often to be untrustworthy than truthful.
How much you want to bet that they will add something to the "Untradeable Card Game" that will end up as some MUST HAVE weapon, buff, or misc item, AND that no one will ever see it drop for "free"?
Yes, I am calling SOE's credibility into question. Only a fool wouldn't question it given their past.

I always preferred "Wanderhome----------------->"

Well, you're going to be "gaming with NGE players in TOR," so you'd better get used to the idea.
A dick is a dick no matter what game they've played in the past, plenty of them on both sides of the fence.
...The spread of secondary and latterly of tertiary education has created a large population of people, often with well developed literary and scholarly tastes, who have been educated far beyond their capacity to undertake analytical thought.
He's just appealing to common knowledge. If you read it closer he also states that the current game is the one he wishes was the original version. I just can't believe that they honestly still believe that the NGE is a good game....
They will stick out as obviously as someone with a Scottish accent and red hair would trying to make out as a spy masquerading as a native Chinese.
They'll be crying "tooo haaaaard" and complaining about anything even slightly challenging and complex.

They will stick out as obviously as someone with a Scottish accent and red hair would trying to make out as a spy masquerading as a native Chinese.
They'll be crying "tooo haaaaard" and complaining about anything even slightly challenging and complex.
Dude, you described about 85% of the MMO playerbase.
