Regnum Online

Hey, i saw "Regnum online" being discussed in these forums and the word RvR popped up and caught my attention. I would just like to know some detail from expericenced players such as:

1.Classes- Are they balanced, fun? Or are there no classes and just jobs?

2.Races- Cool? Start off in own location? Factions?

3.Community- Populated? Helpful?

3.PvE- Boring quests? Grind-fest?

4. PvP- RvR fun? PvP often?

5. End-Game- Is it a very good or bad game, end-game? Alot more content?

,Thanks

    1.   There are 3 classes, and 6 sublcasses (chosen at 10th level):

    • Warrior:  Knight (defensive tank with auras that protect allies), and Barbarian (offensive tank with powerful attacks).
    • Mages:  Warlock (offensive magic) and Conjurer (healer).
    • Archer:  Marksmen (powerful range damage) and Hunter (commandos with tracking skills and pets).

In my experience (playing for 2 months), the classes are very balanced in pvp, each with a role.  Sometimes people complain that the offensive classes most powerful attacks should be nerfed, but this just seems to be the standard mmo complaining.

    2.  There are 3 realms each with its own races.

    • Alsius:  Nordic, snowy and mountainous.  Races are dwarves, Uthgars (Yeti-like goats), and humans.
    • Ignis:  Red desert.  Races are dark elves and two types of humans.
    • Syrtis:  Hilly Forest.  Races are elves, half-elves and humans.

The races are fairly standard, but each realm is very distinct with its own style of architecture, sound effects and atmosphere.  Each character, no matter what race, starts off in its realm, before going to the contested "war zone"

    3.  The community of Regnum Online is one of its biggest pluses.  It is probably the friendliest MMO community I have played in.  In the game, you can't talk to players in other realms, so you really get to know your realm-mates.  Success in battles vs. the other realms also depends on having a healthy realm and people working together, so other players in the realm will help you.

Regnum started as a game for the Spanish market made by NGD studios in Argentina.  An English server was added for English players three months ago.  The English server is still growing (Spanish is full).  This means, depending on what time you play, you might be fighting in full scale fort battles, or you might be part of a small party hunting in the war zone.

    4.  PvE in Regnum is secondary to the RvR pvp.  Levels 1-30 are done primarily through questing.  The quests are the standard, kill x of these, or talk to these people and do this.  But if you like reading the quest text, the Regnum quests are actually pretty fun, as they tell you the history of your realm, and some of the story lines are pretty amusing.  Quests and PvE also provide the drops of weapons you will need for pvp (and also xp to level up).

At levels 30-50 (level cap), there are fewer quests, so you must grind more.  I'm not a PvE fan, so I find grinding tedious overall.  Regnum is not really an item-based game (and there is no crafting), so there is less of a point to its PvE than other games (except for xp and weapon drops).  Regnum is a free to play game with item mall, so I buy xp boosts to make leveling faster.  Others might feel differently, but I prefer PvP.

There are also unique bosses in each realm that must be fought with parties (and who give special drops).

    5. Realm vs. Realm PvP combat is what the game is all about.  Everything else in the game leads to this (and this is the game's niche).   Outside of the inner realms (which are safe from enemy players), there is the war zone, where each realm has a territory with three forts.  Play in the war zone is free form.  You can take enemy forts with your realm mates and defend your own or the ones you've taken against the enemy realms.  In a party with a hunter, you can track enemy players through the entire war zone; then set up an ambush and surprise them.  PvP in the war zone runs the gamut.  Sometimes there is "honourable" 1v1 combat, other times there are zergs rolling over everything.  There is small party combat, underhanded attacks, Mexican standoffs and everything in between.

Unless you've played freeform RvR combat before, it is difficult to describe.  Literally anything can happen.  I play a hunter, and personally I love sneaking through the war zone with my tracking skills and camouflage ( 60 second invisibility) and surprising people out of nowhere.  Others, like knights, enjoy being shields for their realm-mates.  Barbarians love the initial rush into battle where they go beserk on the enemy.  Conjurers like standing back and healing and rezzing their party members during fort wars and pitched battles.

RvR combat does not give xp.  "Realm Points" are awarded, but currently they buy nothing but bragging rights.  IMHO, this is the best way to go, as it encourages free play.

NGD Studios also has something called "Invasions" planned.  Under this expansion, when you take a realm's three forts, you will be able to invade their inner realm; and, one assumes, loot and plunder.

    5.  There is no structured end game in Regnum.  Once you hit level 50, you are at the most powerful level in the game.  Essentially you become a leader in your realm, protecting the lower levels in the war zone (they recommend being level 30 to leave the inner realm) and helping direct combat.

    6.  One more observation.  Regnum Online is made by a 9-man development crew in Argentina.  The developers frequently answer questions themselves on the forum; and this helps foster a tight-knit community (and also some drama too) .  With a small team, they can respond to the players immediately.  When they reduced backwards movement speed to stop kiting mobs, people complained, and the developers changed it back in less than 24 hrs.  On the other hand, bugs can sometimes take a bit longer to be fixed than at the bigger games.

    7.  Conclusion.  Regnum Online is the most fun I've had online, and I started playing with text MUDS (though I never did play DAoC).  It just depends if RO is what you are looking for in a game.
