just want to point out the huge difference between "not as obvious" and "not obvious". "not as obvious" still alludes to it being obvious. and "mostly all coming head on" is a ridiculous defense.
In the right conditions yes, it'll look just like it does on Hoth as it does in that linked video. I agree that it could be done better, which is why I posted about it in the feedback thread on the Official forums
I'm glad you posted about it but I'm still not buying the euphemisms. "the right conditions" make it sound like a rare occurrence. It's not like the planets have to align. It looks obvious to me when the weapon fires outside of 10 degrees from where it's pointed and I'm being generous imagining that the weapon is articulated even though it's not in the game. That leaves 340 degrees for nonsensical trick-shots. It'd be more accurate to say you need the right conditions in order for vehicle weapon fire to look appropriate.
You can stop :P I've already pretty much agreed with you that it needs a fix...
and I've already acknowledged that you agreed it needed a fix ("I'm glad you posted about it.."). That's why my last post was about you using euphemisms ("..but I'm still not buying the euphemisms.").
Someone on the Official forums posted this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUw007jZ7QQ. It's a bug that they were able to take the AT-ST out of Hoth (this is on TC, remember) but it does show that vehicle combat can exist outside of Hoth. Here's hoping that combat vehicles outside of Hoth do become a reality in the near future
So, it appears that an AT-ST is wandering around, shooting people in a very unhothlike environment.
It also appears that you're suggesting this means that SWG could see combat vehicles outside of Hoth, in the near future.
Here's what troubles me about this:
-The dev team said that due to limitations with the ground-game coding, vehicle combat is not possible outside of an instance.
Hoth IS the ground code. Some people here seem to think it's done on the JTL engine, however it's not. Instances don't use a different engine on the ground compared to any other ground area. Obviously they've got around whatever issues they originally had.
-The video is edited, and badly at that. Are we to trust that this is an accurate representation of something that can be added to the ground game, outside an instance, despite what the dev team said?
One doesn't need to be an expert at throwing together fraps clips to show off what they're doing. Also, it's not hard to go and replicate what you see in the video clip. If you have a Vet trial, login to TC, go to Hoth, jump in an AT-ST and click the shuttle to leave the Heroic.
-You're suggesting that vehicle combat outside the Hoth instance is probable regarding development in the near future. This reminds me of Smed's suggestion that guild-controlled star destroyers were being considered, when in actuality they were not.
I think this is covered above. The difference here is that this system is actually in the game.
-Like Smed, your suggestion appears designed to encourage people to subscribe. Some people may read your post, see the video and buy subscription time. They may then never experience vehicle combat outside of the Hoth instance. They will feel they were misled by you in this post, but they won't be able to do anything about it because in your wording, you haven't actually made any development promises. You've merely made suggestions, like Smedley. Also, you post as though you're just a player of the game, and in no way a marketting representative of SOE, so no one can claim that SOE misled them.
I have no responsibilities if such a thing happens or not. I posted to start a discussion on the topic because I thought it was a cool possibility. SOE isn't allowing any discussion of it on the main forums as they consider it an exploit, despite being on TC.
-As someone else mentioned, you can play Battlefront online with StarWars vehicle combat with working collision detection, a user friendly interface and no noticeable bugs. It works well, is guaranteed to have vehicle combat, and does not have a subscription fee.
Sure, but I don't play Battlefront, I play SWG. Having something like it added to the game I currently play is much more attractive then picking up another game that I have no other interest in. Likewise I wouldn't expect someone purely wanting vehicle combat in a game to pickup SWG for it.
I hope that people don't see your post, watch the video, believe that vehicle combat is coming soon to all of SWG (as you suggest) and go out and spend money for this. If they do (their perogative), I hope they aren't dissappointed, but I expect they will be.
I would say something about this kind of marketting further undermining SOE's reputation, but at this point they probably feel they have nothing to lose.
I'm not sure how a post by an individual that has no relation at all to SOE or LA (yes, I've read the rather amusing posts on various forums that I work for SOE ) could be considered marketing. As for people believing that this is something definate that will happen then I'm sorry, but I'm not going to take responsibility for people reading words that weren't written.
Of course you won't take responsibility for what you're suggesting, just as Smed never took responsibility for "suggesting" that players would get guild controlled star destroyers. You and he seem to believe it's acceptable to practice marketting by suggestion. This leaves the option of deniability if that which is suggested never materializes. I feel it's misleading and unethical. Much of what SOE has done with SWG fits into that category for me and probably a few hundred thousand other former players. Apparently you and Smed live by similar ethical standards, which may partly explain why you continue to do business with him and continue to suggest that others would benefit themselves by doing the same.
I won't speculate on the nature of your relationship with SOE. When I use the term "marketting," I'm referring to the function of your posts. You clearly and repeatedly provide SOE with positive word of mouth marketting for their StarWars MMO.
When you do this in a clear and honest manner, I actually respect it. When you use Smed-like suggestions of things that may never be, I don't.

Me talking about the possiblity of vehicle combat outside of Hoth is no different to people on the Vet forum talking about the possiblity of pre-cu servers.

I think this is also misleading, to be honest. No vet that I'm aware of has ever posted a link to a video of a pre-cu test server. They have also never suggested that one would be coming to SWG in the near future, with any kind of video footage to get people's hopes up.
Just imagine the hype that would be generated if I started a thread saying "pre-cu servers may be coming to SWG" and then I posted a link to a video of someone apparently testing a pre-cu server. This is what you've done. Vets have obviously never done this, and I hope you're able to both see this, and admit it.
Of course this is misleading, a lot of what Obraik posts is. Server populations, updates, anything. It is always written like a Press Release and not like an actual opinionated post in a forum.
Obraik makes it sound like there is a fully-functional vehicular battle taking place in Mos Eisley right now. Like I said, there are way too many technical reasons that vehicle combat outside of an instance isn't feasible for SWG.
The avatar combat is already bad enough but throwing in the fact that there is no collision and degree of rotation for vehicles, and very poor line of sight for each, I can't imagine any way that a small development team like SWG, with very limited resources, could pull this off without a major rewrite of base code.
Isn't going to happen. Would it matter anyways? In the off chance that a miracle took place and they got it to functionality all you would have is a bunch of vehicles roaming around. No one would step outside again.

Anyone that has some degree of reading comprehension would read that I quite clearly stated that this is a bug on TC at the moment. Of course, there are people such as yourself that would much rather spin what was said to suit whatever intentions you have.
To say it can't exist just proves even further that you're merely just posting for the sake of posting. Watching the video shows quite clearly shows that it could (remember people, could doesn't mean will) work outside of Hoth if they decided to spawn a bunch of the mountable AT-ST's in whatever place outside of Hoth, or if you decide to jump on TC and take advantage of the bug.
So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. No, he doesn't. Not even close.

It's blatantly obvious that these "vets" hear what they want to hear. In the "Veteran's refuge" there is a whole thread about how Smed says he IS shutting the game down which is not what he said at all. Obraik said he would LIKE to see vehicular combat in the game which does not imply anything at all.
Just more attacks on any positive statement about the game from the same disgruntled "vets" who should keep their negative comments in the forum that they were specifically given for that purpose.
I don't even know why people are discussing whether there should be combat vehicles or not.
How can combat vehicles be balanced in PvP? Will they essentially become the new "alpha class", or will someone be able to fight a tank one on one with a pistol? In either case it's going to leave a lot of people unhappy.

Nice try...
The title of this thread is "Vehicle Combat Could Spread Outside of Hoth"... NOT "Obraik said he would LIKE to see vehicular combat in the game"... BIG difference. I know you like to flame everyone who doesn't blindly have faith in the development of this game like many, but people just want some of you to stop telling us all those lies, those sweet little lies.

He said he would like to see vehicular combat in his post. The title is not misleading in any way. WW3 could start tomorrow.
Stop hating, and move on.

PS : BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA @ "blind faith". I was involved in a 4 hour voice chat last night about what is wrong with SWG and what needs to be fixed - decay, economy etc.
I have a vested interest in these things because I still play, you on the other hand ......
I would play this game again if it wasn't so horribly mismanaged and restrictive. Also, I have said that I believe SWG will close only when there is a new Star Wars MMO, not before, so stop generalizing.
It doesn't change the fact that the mere point of this thread is to mislead people into believing that vehicular combat might be coming outside of Hoth. It starts with the very title of this thread.

It could be possible to do it without making vehicles something you must have to win a battle. Vehicles could be made so that they do "normal" damage to players but are most effective against other vehicles and area attacks. Maybe like in space with ships, vehicles could have key systems that one could target to disable parts of it - maybe Smugglers could slice them too?

he's saying it doesn't work either way. Vehicles have bigger better weapons so it doesn't make sense to have them do "normal" dmg to players. And if you make them do higher dmg then it imbalances pvp.

Good ideas, however I doubt that people would be content to have their vehicle combat be on par with a rifle or pistol - nevermind the possible unfair advantage one might have relating to the speed of thier vehicle. Likewise I don't think many people will be happy with a vehicle being an alpha class much like a pre-CU Jedi.
Everyone will have different expectations from vehicles and therefore many people will undoubtedly feel let down if those expectations aren't met. You'll never be able to satisfy a reasonable ammount of players.
BTW Obraik this would probably make a great post on the Oforums. I think it would be very interesting to see what peoples' expectations are when they think of vehicle combat.
He's gonna be pissed when BioWare does Vehicle combat right and makes it fun. SWG will look to him the way we all see it now, silly.
I laugh at statements like these. I can't wait until your "Messiah" game comes to kill the evil SWG monster and bring salvation to the "vets". People who vehemently proclaim that they left SWG because it was changed to target the "kiddie", "WoW", "Not complex enough for their superior intellect" audience are all lining up for WoW : SW edition.
I seriously cannot wait.
SWTOR will be a testament to the cr*p films and TV shows that Lucas et al have been spewing forth for the past decade. Mark my words. It's only salvation is that it is being handled by a competent company in Bioware. That competency will be utterly undermined by LAs lust for the dollar.

Any response for this Obraik?
No, because I'm rather sure that I've made myself pretty clear throughout this thread that I don't need to go over it again. Feel free to go through the previous replies - I don't have any intention of engaging in future attempts at derailing this thread.
BTW Obraik this would probably make a great post on the Oforums. I think it would be very interesting to see what peoples' expectations are when they think of vehicle combat.
That may be a good idea. I originally posted it here because threads about it at the time were being deleted as it's considered an exploit, even though it's only on TC.
As for the balance issues you mentioned, as is the case with any new profession update/additions in any MMO, there will always be varying opinions on how "balanced" such a change was and unfortunately, not all can be satisfied - human nature makes that impossible.
I have had other trains of thought in regards to how it could be done. Such as keeping the vehicles somewhat powerful but introducing means of countering them. Means such as giving Munitions crafters the ability to craft anti-vehicle mines, slower refire rates, vulnerable sections, etc. I do think there are ways they can be made possible in a PvP scenario without being alpha nor weak.

Tecmo Bowl.

Like the game has been going to shutdown for the last three years? Those lies?
He said he would like to see vehicular combat in his post. The title is not misleading in any way. WW3 could start tomorrow.
Stop hating, and move on.
Cheers

Tecmo Bowl.

Pre-CU Jedi taught us that.
Is he?
That competency will be utterly undermined by LAs lust for the dollar.

nice find Obraik.
as for the state of the game...its getting better...
Vehicle combat is a bonus no matter what form its in as it proves it can be done and thus other MMO's will follow.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Any response for this Obraik?

No, because I'm rather sure that I've made myself pretty clear throughout this thread that I don't need to go over it again. Feel free to go through the previous replies - I don't have any intention of engaging in future attempts at derailing this thread.
