WoW beater? don't think so

Dream on people it is not going to happen. Today you can't get a loan for a toouthbrush let alone a video game that might be 5% as good as World of Warcraft with 1% of their staff. It always baffles me when someone who doesn't want a WoW-clone waits for an indie developer to come up with "something completely different" and off the wall. How is that going to happen?

It is like a paradox, you can't beat WoW by being the same as WoW because why not just play WoW which won't close down in X years. But to make "something completely different" likely means that this game is nowhere near the quality level of WoW and is more risky and therefore less likely to be supported.

Exactly what game is everyone waiting for to surpass WoW, it is not going to happen. Even EA and Games Wokshop with multi-million budget couldn't even get 10% of WoW's number. Does everyone think there will be a sleeper hit from an indie developer that has fresh ideas or is a new concept or does something really cool.

"Oh yeah EQ2 will beat WoW" (1 month before both games released) These forums were littered with WoW vs EQ2 threads months before and after both games come out.

Let's try sci-fi yeah cos that work out well for EnB, Tabula Rasa and HG:L and Auto Assault..

"WoW vs AoC" - lolz

"WAR is coming" WAR came and went.

It doesn't matter what game you compare WoW with. WoW will always be on top I predict for at least 10 years. It now has 11 million subscribers and has been out for nearly 4 years and to suggest that its population will shrink enough for another MMO to usurp it is ridiculous.

Whatever game anyone suggests I will laugh at like some megolomaniacal James Bond baddie. You may as well just play WoW.

Everything eventually comes to an end. It's only a matter of time really.

Edit Add: I give WoW another 4 years at most before a massive decline in popularity. I highly doubt it will ever die though.

I think the story-driven idea of Star Wars: The Old Republic might be what is needed to kill WOW. Yes all MMOs have a story, but most don't keep you in that story. Most don't even make you feel that you have you own story. Or that your story effects the overall story of the game.

Plus most game don't let you feel like you are the class/job/profession that you are. When was the last time you felt like a warrior, jedi, rogue, smuggler,  or whatever and felt that was your job in the game? Like your job in real life. Especially in the leveling, why can't we feel like we are learning our chosen class/job/profession?

In all MMOs most of the time all players have the same leveling expeirence. Some times there might be a few various changes to the expierence with choosing a different race or faction, but not much. Hopefully BioWare and LucasArts will follow through with this. If not, we just have the same old game that we have always have had.

I've been wanting a game like this for years. Ever since I started playing MMOs, back in 2004 with Star Wars Galaxies. Lastly people use the term WOW clone a lot lately, but if you think about it. WOW is a clone of everything that came before it. So really nothing has been new under the sun in a really long time.

Well that was simply my two cents, you can take it or leave it.

When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!

I agree with the OP, after 4 years WoW is just BORING to me but its still WoW and everytime I play these new games I get the feeling "maybe I should just go back to WoW", that is not to say new games cant be successfull because they can they just wont make billions of dollars a year in revenues.Like it or not, good or bad, Blizzard has set the standard model for mass market MMO's which is reward with litle effort and very good usability and without their financial power and resources it cant be achieved.

Regarding Indie developers im with the OP on this one as well, darkfall comes to mind , this game has been on the limbo of release/vaporware for the last 4-5 years with a feature list that would bring tears to Richard Garriott's eyes, thinking that this small company without any game release experience, limited budget ,limited resources and no real game publisher can deliver this "All-in-one MMORPG wonder" is beyond optimistic, this same example applies in my opinion to any mmorpg indie developer thinking they know better and can do it better with limited resources, it is not gonna happen.

All in all , I dont think we will see another really good appealing MMO release until a company injects another 70-100 million dollars on a project.

Huxley is completely different then wow.

Granted, its not an indie developer but rather a major korean developer, its something in a different direction.

I like wow, im just saying its not the end all be all.

I'm not quite sure by what factors you are comparing when you say "beat WOW"

In terms of subs, no, probably not going to a see a game like that for quite a while, though when it happens it will be by a game that somehow appeals equally to both PC and console gamers. (IMO)

In terms of polish, yes, its possible for an smaller Dev to make a well made game, it just has to be part of the plan from the beginning and hopefully we'll see someone pull that off.

In terms of gameplay features, there are many games out there that rival WOW, in my own case, I find EVE to be a far superior game to WOW (at least from my perspective) and most other games actually, so to me, WOW's already been "beat"

I'm boggled when I read posts like above where people acknowledge they are "totally bored" with WOW, yet continue to play it for lack of something better.  If I found myself in that position, I'd quit playing MMORPG's altogether.

Wow will not always be on top, not because a wow killer shows up but because the game is aging. Blizzard knows it and are working on a new game, computergames don't age that well.

Wow have already lasted very long and the new expansion will keep the game alive. But the strong rise of subs it have had earlier is slowing now. 1 more year and it will start dropping.

If the next big game will be a indie game from a small company or a gigant from Boioware or Blizzard, who knows? But you can't really think that a computergame will last 15 years, that is impossible with todays computer revolution.

Blizzard did an amazing work to get wow this big for 4 1/2 years but it can't last forever, nothing does. Something new will come but saying that is a specific game is impossible.

Remember a small company that made a simple action fantasy game named Diablo? No one really expected it to be so big. However no one is playing it today because it is really old now. Blizzard was a small company too, you know.

And there are small MMO companies that got out really big games, Guildwars is still one of the biggest MMO games and it was made by a trio that used to work for Blizzard. Small companies can sell well and become big,

Electronics arts was once a small company doing C-64 games, now they are huge. Small companies occasionally makes great games. However Blizzard and Bioware knows what they are doing and will probably make 2 huge games also, both companies record are impressive.

you know what will beat WoW? a game that will probably make the genre even more idiot friendly than WoW. A game that dumbs down the genre even moreso than WoW so you instant gratification gimps can play 5 minutes a day and still get super uber gear.

heres the game that will beat WoW

you log in and you are given a couple of options

option 1) what character would you like to use?

option 2) what level would you like to achieve today? (if you are max level please use the "Endgame" option)

endgame option 1 - Would you like to achieve a new piece of armor? please select set piece (chest, legs, gloves ect) and the quality you would like (green, blue or purple)

Endgame option 2 - would you like to get a new weapon? if so choose your weapon of choice (bow, sword, shield ect) and the quality you would like (green, blue or purple)

once you go through all that you get a "Please Wait" .... and get the message ...

"The options you have chosen will take *X*  hours to complete ... please do not turn off the computer while we automate your leveling/gear gathering process."

so this way all you casual gamers dont even have to play at all ... you can really let the computer do all the work for you.

Lol, you jest but this reminds me of an argument I had with a guildmate of mine. He was talking about how he plays on his friends account so that he can experience high-level battlgrounds. I was arguing that it defeats the point of playing the game and that the whole point of levelling is that you learn your class. I ended up getting so frustrated that I asked whether, given the choice, he would opt for a system very similar to that outline in the above post. He said he definitely would.

A little piece of me died inside that day.

I think you misinterpreted my post I did not say I continued to play it, cause in fact I dont, WoW is just more polished than other releases out there. Its like playing Counter-Strike 1.6 after you have played Source for a while even tho the 1.6 concepts are better and its more challenging it doesnt feel quite as right as Source anymore (I have only played source in its early days so I have no idea of the state of the game now its just an example from when i did play it) .

Well the OP can continue to play WoW for the next ten years. I too doubt the game will completely die off...after all UO is still chuggin along after 10 years. I don't t hink we will see another game with sub numbers like WoW, but more smaller population games developed by Indy companies. N those indy companies will care more about the game and players, and would be quite satisfied with 100k subs.

WoW is just a money grab now, and it's the majority of players that enjoy that casual based play. And lots of kids can play it too. Perhaps once the young MMO generation grows up and wants a decent looking involving game we will see a shift in WoW power.  But that won't for another 10 years, once the kids that play it now hit their mid 20s....

that's right, wow will not be beated soon, not even in 4 years, But wow will get smaller and smaller when the game gets older, But you will probably still find servers running the game in 20 years or so. Will there become a day that wow will go offline? yes it will. Eternity does not exist and is an illusion. But when? who knows? Wow is just big! you can compare it a bid with OS systems for computers. All the mmo's are linux and macintoch, and wow is windows

Wow has recently changed. They've gotten 11 million members, so there is no more customer support.

They installed a patch, and everything is still broken.

They totally nerfed Rogues, stole racial spells, added worthless spells, completely changed the ways pallys and hunters play.

They removed healing bonus completely, now yer specced for dps whether you like it or not if you're a healer.

They totally downgraded everyone's class to make room for "improvements" in the $40 expansion. So that's $20 for the orginal, $30 for the first expansion, and $0 for the newest expansion, plus $15 a month, FOR NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ALL, and encouragement to the gold farming and ganking griefers. I could get that for free in some game from Korea that encourages gold farmers and gankers.

Lag is terrible, and makes some servers unplayable.

They lost pets and mounts in the patch and haven't given them back.

Peope have characters in transfer limbo for 2 weeks or more!!!

There's no support at all on weekends, the in game ticket system is up to a 5 day wait, when your ticket just dissapears with no response, the phone system is a 30 min wait, IF you can get through at all.

And they've decided that in game world wide pvp griefer events are fun and will have more of them, evn though they lag the server so bad you can't play.

I was totally addicted for 3 years, and now the game has changed to the point where people like me can't play it anymore."

You still think with these problems wow still live for that long? From the beggining of the game blizard made the game even more suckiest moth by month, i played 2 years and an half and the time i was there i have seen in and i think about it all the time. Wow is getting more crappy patch by patch, expansion by expansion.

    Nothing more to say

The closest thing to a WoW beater is HKO...

You cant beat WoW in its own market space, but you can take another market space, and do the same thing. The young/casual market has a much greater potential than the current WoW market, and someone will hit it off big there, and be the next WoW.

  • tenetketenetke Member Posts: 15

5% as good as world of warcraft. That amounts to taking a grinder to my teeth. That game sucks. ?  I wouldn't really look past the power of newer companies offering things people want. You know at one time there was no microsoft.

I can tell something by reading this person's post though. They have never, ever programmed in their life. If they had they would understand how different the landscape is now than when WoW first started. Let's go over a few things about WoW.

    1. WoW has been out around 4 years, and yet still has tons of glitches and security issues. Now after that long a game should be free of bugs. We buy a game in a video store, that has not been in development for 6 years, and we expect it to be free of bugs. During my first week of playing wow I consistently encountered bugs. When I asked about then, I got nothing. I have screen shots of enemies that were killed, yet they just stood there completely immune to damage. They wouldn't drop or count as a kill. Iron, and herbs, growing inside trees? That game had more bugs than a 20$ hooker.

    2. The mechanics behind the game are subpar. The game hasn't brought anything new to the world. Their graphic engine is poorly made, the db is slow, and yes I could go on.

    3. The use of spyware to spy on the people paying to play their game. WTF, who thought it would be cool to spy on the people paying you to play your game. If you are worried about cheating there are many more options available to a big buisness like blizzard.

    4.  The community support, well there really isn't any community relations to speak of. Occasionally you have some person post on their forums in blue text about how they are going to change the game. Like it or not.

If I really need to keep on going I can. WoW is a horrible game, and it has subscriptions because the choices available to people are:

    a. Not well known to the average user. This is a big company that pulled in many blizzard fans. They have the money to run commercials often and put up tons of advertisement.

    b. Not as simple as familiar as WoW in some aspects. People get used to a certain aspect from rpg games. Then that translates over to what they expect from mmorpgs. They expect the grind up to a high level with huge numbers flying around.

Sure you can put down Warhammer, but that game hasn't been released for 2 months yet. According to Electronic Arts, WAR has sold 1.2 million copies and has 800,000 registered users as of September 30, 2008. ^http://news.ea.com/portal/site/ea/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&ndmConfigId=1012492&newsId=20081030006325&newsLang=en

I think games like Stargate:Worlds, and Knights of the Old Republic are going to put that final nail in WoW's coffin. If you want just look at the planned expansion content. They are already copying from Warhammer, just like they copied most of their content from other companies.

I think there are games that could kill WoW its just the fact that people 2nd guess them and don't even give games the chance and just push them aside like yesterdays news. I do think that sometime in the next few years there will be a game so well developed that WoW will just be like a bug that gets squished and tossed away. Now i can't say when this will happen but it will most certainly happen. The reason no cash shop game can live up to this is because well its a cash shop game and you will have to pay more then $15 a month to fully enjoy the game since you do not have access to everything in game.

The only thing in my MMO history i regret is leaving Final Fantasy XI to play WoW because my older bro said it was worth it. Now i think if people gave Final Fantasy XI a chance it could easily topple WoW but people don't like to be forced into grouping so people just over look it. I had more fun in 2 weeks on FFXI then i did the 3 years of playing WoW I'm just upset it took me 3 year to figure this out.

All I'm saying is there are games out right now and even some in the future that have the the goods to kill WoW its just the fact as stated people just don't want to give WoW up since they have been playing for years and moving on to a new MMO just doesn't feel right.

I have not played a single MMO since quitting WoW just because there are none that have that certain something. Now over the past few months i have been talking with some friends from FFXI and really considering going back since it is the only game that i ever had fun on. Right now its a 99% chance i will because i don't ever want to play WoW again it just gets boring after awhile and i don't play games that don't keep me entertained every second I'm playing. So again there are and will be WoW killers it just you the we as gamers have to give the games the chance they deserve.
