Think yer choices from what you described are limited to Tabula Rasa or Planetside...
Tabula Rasa would be the better choice for you imo.
wait for huxley
------------------------------
Huxley looks really promising, the only other MMO thats similar to a shooter is Stargate worlds. I personally did not like Tabula Rasa.
i played it tbh it was a lonley world i hardly saw n e 1 on the map
I'd just like to throw in my two cents here...
I hated Tabula Rasa at launch (I used to used to bash it the way some people bash AoC), but the game has greatly improved over the past year (I just started playing it again about two weeks ago), and it's MUCH more polished than it once was. Plus, with Deployment 15 (TR's moniker for "patches"), we'll be getting "PvE Mech gameplay opportunities" along with the ability to return to Earth. From what I've been reading, it would appear that New York will be the first available area on Earth, and more locales will possibly be added at a future date. Also, we will be getting an "FPS mode" soon from what I understand, which allows a camera perspective similar to that which you would see in an FPS game.
Another good source of information is provided in the link below, which is a thread that compiles all of the player questions/dev responses from a recent developer QA session (credit goes to poster 'Darkspark' on the Planet TR forums):

In addition, I'll provide you with the official "Friday Feature" link that details information concerning D15:

There's a 7-day free trial available on the on the official website (http://www.rgtr.com/index.html). I ALWAYS play a trial before I purchase any MMO. If there isn't one available, I wait for one or bum a key off a friend... While this seems like common sense to me, you would be surprised at the number of idiots who repeatedly waste their money (or maybe they just don't care) on games they end up hating.
There is unfortunately very little choice when it comes to fps mmorpgs.
- Neocron 2 (old)
- Entropia Universe (might get expensive)
- Tabula Rasa (less fps than other two, no first person look yet - just shoulder look, once targeted reticle will stick to mobs)
Two of those have trials and other one is free to download (can basically just move around and see what is it about for free, everything else costs money).
Might wanna wait for coming titles.
SOE's PlanetSide is a true FPS come MMO, although there are not that many levels.
Also World War 2 Online is another true FPS, although i don't know how much char customisation there is.
Your description seems to be of an FPS with in-built skill as you level.... ***VOMIT***
Anyway, Planetside and WWII online are the only 2 real fps's, but you dont get any buffs as you level, you do get armour and access to different weapons, vehicles.
Most of the others are sticky targeting and aiming is not essential. Darkfall is supposedly realeasing next month and seems to be pretty much what you are looking for, but there is a big question mark as to what condition is will be in and what will be in it. None the less its worth waiting a month for to see.

also hellgate london (how the hell did you all miss this>?!) while it lasts.
you would probably have better luck finding games that support net play than full mmo's.
tabula rasa is not a fps i dont give a rats ass what it looks like the mechanics are NOT there! even as a shooter it isnt there, so it isnt FP and it isnt shooter (even if they add FP view it will never be one) its just a dumb way to burn 15$/mo (if it was 5 maybe then). stargate worlds is such a rip off of tabula rasa it is most likely going to be an epic flop just like the game it's copying.
huxley hopefully will rock, but i cant really speculate...they sure seem to be taking their time.
planetside is free if you get station access (so are like 4 other SOE games).
cypt1: dont let them fool you with that mech nonsense, like everything else in that game they will deliver less than they promise. it aint like its going to be a damn gundam, it will just be 1 of those stupid mechs @ the cp's. i buy alot o games on amazon, i play them just so i can hate on them and know wtf im talking about (cause dissing on a game you never played makes you kinda look like a moron) free trials generally have things like lockouts on auction houses or limited level caps/starting zones/or race choices.
No, it isn't perfect, but I like the game as it is in spite of its shortcomings. I know what the mechs are, and no one is "fooling" me. It's not a true FPS in the sense of the word, but it's much more action-oriented that certain MMOs (*gags* WoW), and the edition of the FPS view will really enhance the game in my case, whether you like it or not. I really don't understand why the hell you'd buy games just to "hate on" them, but whatever... It's your money to waste.
And what are you getting at with "trials"? Hey, even if most games do utilize a lockout of some sort, you can still get an idea of what the game is generally going to be like, unless the game confines you to a trial island or something (SWG and its craptastic space station are a great example here). But, geez, it just seems bizarre that anyone would choose to waste their money on a game when they could try ANY version of it for free. Go figure.
You can give the OP your "opinion" on TR, but I didn't ask you for it, so direct it elsewhere as you're wasting your time in my case. I wasn't soliciting for opinions, last time I checked.
