My monitor has died.

Yes she was an old 18inch CRT and I have been forced to upgrade. The problem I have been coming across is what to do with this old baby. My garbage company said they won't take it, best buy doesn't do it and circuit city said they have also stopped their program. So what to do. I am located in Washington State and any ideas for what to do with this thing would be appreciated.

It's funny how governements around the world encourage people to recycle, but then they don't put schemes in place that allows that to happen........

Maybe you could donate it to something or other?  Also can't you take it to your local recycling centre?  You could probably find them online.

No doubt STE. Every place I keep turning to keeps saying they don't do it. Maybe I should take it to the State Capitol Building and leave it on the doorstep with a note that says "I didn't know where to take this to recycle so here you go. Now it's your problem. Have a nice day."

Here in California, Electronic Recyclers have started to charge people to take away thier stuff.

  • seabass2003seabass2003 Member Posts: 4,144

Signe- every place I have checked either charges or just doesn't do it. If someone wants me to do the right thing but are going to charge me to do that then I will always choose to do the wrong thing like roll it down a big hill in the forest.

Haul it to your city dump or turn it into a small aquarium if you are a handy man.

    You are jocking..........

Here in London, a man unloaded all of his weekly rubbish in the hall of the local Council, because they forgot to collect his trash for more than a week...........and it wasn't one bag

Aye that one was in France, farmers were protesting with the government because they cut their subsidies.

    French people are very classy.............

Oh, didn't mean to insult you Brits with the france guy. I think I have decided to just dig a hole and bury it in my backyard. Then when I move people will find it thousands of years later and be like "WTF is this!"

Lol I didn't took it as an insult, I was just having a dig at French people (just healthy banter between Europeans)

Unlucky about  your monitor. Oh, and welcome back?

    ?

  • SigneSigne Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 2,524

Very strange not being able to find a place to recycle a monitor without paying for it.

Brits do like to dump things in protest every now and then, though.  Pro fox hunters dumped dead animals in the middle of Brighton once.  Big animals, too, like a horse and a cow.  The pictures were disgusting.  PETA once dumped manure at one of Gordon Ramsey's restaurants - they were protesting culling or something.  My favourite dumping was when the guy from Chumbawamba dumped ice water on Fatty Two Jags (Deputy Prime Minister).  God, I loved that!

Welcome back? HEHE. Yeah, I come here still but I just don't post as much. I seemed to have always figured out a way to get myself in trouble. Plus alot of the posts I was getting involved in were the "this game sucks" or "this game rocks" posts which are just a total waste of time. Even when you prove people wrong they won't believe you. So I just kind of lurk in the shadows.

Oh, and I don't get updates sent to my email so I have to check back manually which is no fun.

do the mature thing, smash it into a crapload of pieces and then just dump the pieces in the trash bin. i know it sounds kinda stupid but im in NY and its pretty much the same, they want me to pay extra to remove junk (even though i pay for garbage pick-up in a 2 person household what people pay for in 6 person house holds) so "break it down for em".

really though, its the diff between it polluting here or being shipped to china to pollute there. maybe you will be inspired to buy green next time (what a joke).

Your right, it was at Natwest Bank, and good for the guy it really is a shit bank that deserved it.

There was also a French and German farmer who did something similar too :)

Maybe with your monitor see if the local schools want it? or if there are any organisations like the scouts around?

  • megafluxmegamegafluxmega Member Posts: 138

i am not mistaken in understanding the monitor is dead right?  that is what "forced" you to upgrade?...why would anyone WANT a dead monitor...even schools have rules about blowing up things that contain hazardous chemicals.

such a great bit of info in that last paragraph. sadly most of use in the US buy from newegg or some other mail order place (only a moron would go pay for a new monitor at say best buy).

It isn't that they are against recycling. CRT and most monitors are toxic. They have to be disposed of properly and garbage truck guys afaik will not take them. They contain mercury & lead which is something that is very costly to remove from old CRT's through recycling. This is why many charge for you to get rid of your old stuff. Not to mention the amount of power they use to recycle old PC junk, but in the end they make up a billion dollar a year business recycling. There was a program on showing the PC recycling and at the end I seen a few gold bars they get every month from recycling and platinum from other electronic parts.

Who let you in the VIP section?

This is not good advice.  Attempting to break the CRT tube is dangerous because doing so would cause it to essentially explode on you.  Do you want to be around when a glass filled grenade goes off?
