I searched the forum and couldn't find anything related to this.
Final Fantasy XI is a lot of fun for about an hour and then the game goes haywire on me. It's almost always a crash. Sometimes it's the sound cuts out. Sometimes the game slows to a crawl when I'm in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a wall in view. And it's always after about an hour of playing. I don't know what to do and Tech Support won't answer my emails.
Also, on a side question, when I set up my joystick, the calibration is wrong in the game even though it is correct out in Windows. Anyone know how to fix this?
My system:
Athlon XP 3200+
1GB Corsair 3200XL RAM
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
160GB Maxtor SATA HD
Joystick = SuperJoyBox13
Please help.

You know what? I seem to be on a roll tonight. In case you're reading this thread to see if you should buy this game:
WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?
Has square ever made an online game before? Then why would they have any idea what to do now? And if you were thinking of getting the PC version:
WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?
Has Square ever, and I mean ever, made a stable port of any of their games to the PC? Hell, no. So why would they miraculously have everything working now? Unless God Himself came down and helped them program this game, they couldn't get it right.
I don't think God would help them either, considering Satan personally penned their payment plan.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. IT IS NOT FUN. IT IS THE ANTI-FUN. MY HATRED OF THIS GAME, WHICH I BOUGHT LESS THAN A WEEK AGO, KNOWS NO END!
I'm going to go to their forums now and tell everyone about this.

Yeah, sorry about that outburst last night. I was coming down off of crash number 5 of that night. I've lost track of the total number of crashes.
One thing that bothers me that people keep telling me is that my computer is probably at fault. The reason that can't be true is that my computer works fine with the following games with or without multiplayer:
Star Wars Galaxies
Doom 3
Unreal Tournament 2004
Call of Duty
Halo
Battlefield 1942 and related mods and spinoffs
Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
Far Cry
The fact of the matter is that this is either a problem with their code or a problem with my discs. I suppose I should try calling Square for a replacement set. Like that's gonna happen.

Do you have your drives updated?
How bout your videocard?
it's his video card. That many crashes, Im willing to bet my left arm on it..
lol, but he's so pissed off that it's the game that he probably wont try it
or the drivers at the very least.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
First thing I tried was going back down to official release drivers. That didn't fix it.
I finally got some semblance of play time by backing down my anti-aliasing from 8x to 2x.
The game is so PS2 oriented that the jaggy's are unbelievable and I was getting 45fps minimum with 8x AA so I assumed it could cope with it. I guess I was wrong. I'm getting unbelievable frame rate now and 2x AA looks a lot better than I thought it would (I never use AA because of performance issues in other games) so I figure I can be happy like this if it doesn't crash in the future. Thanks for the help. I'll post again if it crashes again. I only tried for an hour when I changed it.

Good News! It runs... with jaggies from Hell!
The only way I could get it to run indefinitely was to turn off AA entirely. Anything else would crash in an hour or less, like clock work. I must say that I am really disappointed that Square can't program support for AA in a PC game that has enjoyed nearly 2 years of bug fixing, especially considering the fact that the game is bypassing the DirectX video renderer (i.e.: jaggies are just as bad at 1600x1200 as they are at 800x600).

Drives me up the wall when people can't program and blame the problems on the hardware. It also drives me up the wall when people who don't have the slightest idea how to use the hardware, blame the hardware.
First of all, I'm a computer enthusiast. I have been playing with registry settings, image quality settings, hardware combinations, and overclocking for the past 6 and a half years (man, I'm getting old). I know a stable computer when I build one.
Second, I'm a Hardcore Gamer. I have been since 8 years ago, before I even owned a computer of my own. I have seen games of all types and of all qualities. I have played HUNDREDS of games on my current setup alone. It is stable with EVERY OTHER GAME IN EXISTENCE. I know that my current setup is stable.
Third, a majority of my business related experience is in programming. I have worked on other people's code as well as my own code. I know a software crash when I see it.
Fourth, I'm a Computer Engineer. I know how these things work. I have a worthless piece of paper that says I know all the theory necessary to design and build a computer from a puddle of silicon. I know how a hardware instability manifests itself. This is not a hardware error.
Fifth, how many games have Square programmed for the PC? Zero. FF7, FF8, and FF11 are all ports from a Motorola 68k ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) based video game console, two of which (FF7 and FF8) were technically not even ports, but hardware emulator wrappers.
To add to that: I absolutely hate it when people who have probably never so much as seen the control panel software for their video card, or probably even updated their drivers, try to tell me that there is a 98% chance that I'm wrong when the real case is that this same person has got their ratios inverted.
For future reference: before you tell someone they're wrong, you might want to find out if they know what they are talking about.
